if all you are doing is walking around...I don't think the cops can demand to see your ID. This is a quick run down on what to do if stopped by the cops. they can demand your ID, you can refuse and ask to leave. if the cops want to hold you, they have to arrest you first...and then things change quite a bit. Basically - if the cops stop you, STFU. don't argue, don't be aggressive. be firm, be polite and above all - BE SILENT.

I know this is already being discussed, but I find it to be the most objectionable part of the story. It is this that directly lead to the tazing. Is that the law in Florida? As far as I understand it, in most places you can't be forced to provide ID, you are only required to identify yourself with your name and, possibly, your address. What if you don't have ID or don't have it on you? Can they just taze you?

That being said, my few encounters with Miami-Dade police show them to be assholes. My girlfriend and about a dozen other people got pepper sprayed when officers decided to use it to subdue someone while they were standing in a 10' x 10' alcove. We were sitting outside and got caught in the cloud that came out. She ended up doubled over and unable to open her eyes. This resulted in a lot of yelling and me calling them farking idiots. They threatened to arrest me, I asked on what charge, "being in the way of your pepper spray? I'd like to see you explain that to your supervisor." or something like that. They decided against doing so.

Also, the cops don't have to arrest you for an investigation. That's called investigative detention and doesn't kick into effect the same rules and procedures that an actual arrest would.
