Really? There are people out there that are this dumb?

Headline should be "Reporter (and subby) falls for BMW owners insurance scam". Yes, I always leave an engagement ring in my car and then loan it to strangers.

return the car to the parking lot the next day and give the keys to the employees" at Hooters, where he was apparently well known

the good samaritan returned to Hooters the next day

he checked at other area Hooters restaurants, in case it had turned up there

Dude loves him some Hooters. I think he really is just a dumb gullible guy, which explains why he is a regular at Hooters. Cindi and Tammi can wink at him and write their names down on a napkin and he forks over $40 in tips, just a genuine sucker.

Even better. I was going for "rolled by a hooker", but this makes more sense. (in a God I'm an idiot to think that this will work kind of way )

If anyone is local to this and can keep an open eye on it, would be interesting to know the outcome.

His 740iL doesn't have a tracker? My Mercedes has that, and its entry level. A 740 is pricey.

Also, hooters wings suck.

"And here's the even sadder part: He had left a yellow engagement ring in the car, Johnson said, as well as a laptop computer, DVDs, and clothing. No value was available for the ring. "

Not sad. Consider all those things a "stupidity tax". I guess it could have been worse because he could have offered to drive the people to wherever, and have been assaulted as well.

2012-07-12 07:50:01 AM
No folks, the saddest part of this is not that they guy was dumb enough to give his car to strangers and leave valuables in it, but that he's such a regular at Hooters that the Hooters employees know him well enough to hang onto his car keys for him.

2012-07-12 07:50:06 AM
Really dude..if you are that butt stupid, get off the world. You're infecting the gene pool with your moranicy.

This isn't passing the smell test. This level of dumb is beyond comprehension. Not many rubes of this caliber drive Beemers.

Yeah, insurance company would usher you out quickly. "How was the ring stolen?" "It was in a car I voluntarily gave to strangers" "Thanks, we'll get back to you"

I like to spot grandparents in the mall with their young grandchildren in tow. I'll then call mall security and report that my child has just been abducted by an old couple matching their description. Nothing's better than watching two old farts with one brain cell left between them try to explain themselves to over aggressive mall cops. This one ram-rod ran the length of the food court and did a flying tackle on this poor old woman in a teal track suit. I just about shiat my pants.

It is an unwritten but imperative command that you must
separate stupid people from their money.

The story does sound more like this...but you genuinely cannot have good samaritan stories anymore because there are so many pricks out there nowadays. I mean remember the people who ripped off people after 9/11 with fake charities, the pricks who scammed victims and the government after Katrina....hell you cannot even stop to help someone on the side of the road anymore or you might get robbed/shot.

After eight days and no BMW, he flagged down a Fairfax City officer and reported the sad tale.

He had left a yellow engagement ring in the car, Johnson said, as well as a laptop computer, DVDs, and clothing.

Uh huh.

The car was valued at $8k. The current POS that I'm driving cost more than that when I bought it used.

The suspects were described as a white male with curly brown hair, about 5 feet 10, average build, and a white female with long brown hair, about 5 feet 5, average build. That narrows it down to about 40 million people.

When did the Post get a sense of humor?

At that very same Hooters about two years ago I saw a man outside staggering around picking up what looked like litter. It turns out he had cashed his check and got roaring drunk and it was cash that was blowing around the parking lot. I managed to collect about $700, another guy collected another fist full and I don't know how much blew away. I thought about "tipping" myself for the effort and to serve as a penalty to him, but I'm not that kind of guy.

Oh, Cindi and Tammi say "Hi."

My thoughts exactly. Especially when the list of car contents expanded to include "a laptop computer, DVDs, and clothing."

The whole thing would be much, MUCH more believable if he'd retrieved those items from the car first- you know, an "I need to get my dry cleaning, work laptop, and ring I just bought for my girlfriend out of my car, THEN you can take it."

As is, I just can't suspend my disbelief.

Some people know a bit about cars and are capable of working on them. If you are spending $3k a year to maintain a car you should probably investigate your driving habits

It's hyperbole, this is the internet. Although I can't imagine parts for a 7 series are cheap even if you put them on.
