stuhayes2010: Seriously, how'd this moron make do much money?

Born rich, went to school with other rich kids, got a job with those rich kids using their wealth and connections to generate more wealth. He's not exactly a self-made man.

teeny: Am I missing something? It sounded like he was quoting G K Chesterton and simple closed the quote at the end...like many people do during a speech.

That's quite honestly what it seems like, not a teleprompter gaffe. I'm a liberal and there are tons of stupid things Romney has said and done and he's a giant cockmonger, but this? This is your big reveal? Christ, people.

I don't quite get groping for tiny gaffes from Romney. It's like scrounging on the floor for crumbs when there's a six course meal sitting on the table in front of you.

He stole it from the blue collar workers that he laid off...to add insult to injury he then stole their pensions and got them to train foreigners to take over those jobs! Mommy, why does Mittens hate America‽

Stealing from the people who made you rich and then throwing them out like yesterday's garbage when you don't need them anymore is the American way!

It can't all be filet mignon and fois gras, sometimes you just want a burger.

Small indulgences aren't bad as long as they stay small.

Oh, come on.

There's enough real bullshiat about Romney without having to include this one. "End of quote" is a commonly used way to signify the end of a quotation, which is what he was doing. I've used it myself in presentations.

Just once I'd like to see a media outlet, ANY MEDIA OUTLET, do a piece assaulting a politician completely and thoroughly for their dipshiat ideas they spew for fifty minutes instead of focusing on a five second gaffe that is completely and utterly inconsequential to anything relating to governing or policy.

Oh, wait. I forgot. Doing that might go against the nature of the political-industrial complex in its neverending quest to raise more money than the other guy.

Lemon. Wet. Good. End of quote.

Criticizing Mr. Romney's use of a teleprompter or slip of the lip is ridiculous. Let's leave that nonsense to the Republicans. We're better than that.

2012-07-12 03:24:16 AM
Cataholic: contrapunctus: It's put there in parentheses so the speaker can clearly see where the quote itself ends. This allows the speaker to have a normal, human pause (or at least fake one) that the audience will interpret as the quote having ended.

This could be the dumbest thing I've ever read...and I've been on FARK for over 10 years.

Nonsense. You've said much dumber things.

The robot's USE of language was correct. I never said it blended well with human conversation. Romney has a ways to go before he graduates from level Watson to level C3PO.

I thought it was not a big deal at all. I've heard people say "end of quote" plenty of times. The only thing he really did wrong was not say "quote" before the quote. Maybe I'm missing something

Really dumb thing to complain about. Equally dumb as Obama's teleprompter jokes.... Ok, those were still more dumb than this. Who really gives a shiat how much Obama uses a teleprompter? I hate that people even discuss this crap

The Why Not Guy: Criticizing Mr. Romney's use of a teleprompter or slip of the lip is ridiculous. Let's leave that nonsense to the Republicans. We're better than that.

Pretty much this.

I'm more critical of the quote itself and the implication that Romney does not see the worth in the general citizenry getting good value in terms of the social contract for their hard earned tax dollars.

He obviously saw the value in a universal healthcare when he introduced Romneycare in Mass but back then he was Republican Governor in a state loaded with Dems and he had to compromise. Nowadays as the nominee for 2012 he's still trying to take credit for Romneycare while simultaneously bashing the ACA and making insincere noises about "repealing and replacing" it because he answers to a party gone mad.

The canard is that Dems want to grow government and Reps want to shrink it.

The truth is Dems want to see value for their buck and Reps have lowered expectations of government and fostered an "I got mine FU" attitude to such a degree that they no longer see the value of a solid social contract.

But I digress.

/Soz.

Romney quote about his NAACP speech

"Remind them of this: If they want more stuff from government, tell them to go vote for the other guy, more free stuff. But don't forget, nothing is really free."

End of quote

Begin quotes

They are just "anti-war government nig---" Rick Santorum "who just want more free stuff." Mitt Romney.

End of quotes

These are their presidential candidates? Why any person would vote Republican is beyond me.

This is very, very funny in its own right, but after four years of "Obama teleprompter herp derp!!1!11!" it's absolutely hilarious

2012-07-12 06:30:24 AM
After watching the video, I have to agree that this isn't Romney screwing up. He's just marking the end of a rather lengthy quote.

I was really hoping this would put the tired Teleprompter-in-Chief crap to bed, too. Now we have nothing to make fun of Romney about. Damn it.

2012-07-12 06:41:29 AM

TalenLee: Yeah, it's archaic and it's weird, but it's not wrong.

I think we've found the Republican response to this one.

Personally, I've never heard anyone do this in my twentysomething years on this planet.

Neither have I. Also I have taken public speaking courses in high school and college, we were never instructed to do this or taught us it was common practice.

Also to quote Mitt Romney, "What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander." It is just another example of Republicans being able to dish it out but get all butt hurt when their own style of attack is turned on them. Especially when unlike when used against President Obama, with Mitt Romney the criticisms actually hold water.

If they can't take it they shouldn't have nominated a candidate that exudes the exact flaws they are trying to project on President Obama.

2012-07-12 07:41:36 AM
Hey, we're all losing focus on how much worse this could have been. Sure, Romney is awkward as hell and probably screwed this up, but at least he didn't reference "Who let the dogs out?"

That being said (imaged?), chill the hell out, it's just a funny little quirk that makes for good ribbing. Nobody is saying he's unfit to lead the country because he read "end of quote" off a teleprompter. We already have about a trillion prior legitimate examples of why he has no business being near the presidency, we don't need to try and trump this one up you friggin' crybaby.

No one would have cared if it hadn't been for all that OBAMA CANT TALK WITHOUT A TELEPROMPTER LOL derp we have put up with for the last 4 years. Republicans brought this on themselves when they raised a furor about nothing.

So the real question is: wtf is wrong with republicans? They're the ones who think teleprompters are an OUTRAGE after all.

Did Martin Luther King Jr. use "end of quote" when quoting Chesterton to begin with?

The "end of quote" thing is less offensive to me than using a nested quote to begin with. Unless it's a parable using the quote that clearly has the second speaker's take on the subject in a way that doesn't just quote the first speaker, it's a structural mess.

Of course, that's not counting the patronizing of using a nested quote just to quote a black guy when you're referencing the message of a plutocratic white guy...

Well, they won't, but we can still have fun.

No need to ignore the cheap jokes when they're actually funny. In this case, it's something that happened and not some bizarre meme that... ignores the fact that Obama's teleprompter use is no different than any major politician or candidate of the last 30 years.
