There's a big difference between a cult and a religion. Huge difference, really.
A "cult" is a religion that you don't like. A "religion" is a cult that you like.

Nah, she would only have to worry about that if she had a son.

So, wait...Let me get this straight...

The whole reason she left $cientology was because it's misogynistic, indoctrinates children, is based on ludicrous myths and involves bizarre rituals...And the first thing she does is go back to CATHOLICISM?!?

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: eraser8: downstairs: Its not a cult.

How do you figure?

Couple things:

(1) If you leave the Catholic Church, there's no pressure by the hierarchy to bring you back into the fold. Your mother might give you grief, but you're not declared a "non-person".

(2) You're not isolated when you're in the Catholic Church. Catholics do pretty normal things outside of the Church and are left alone by the hierarchy when they do so.

(3) They don't take all of your money. While voluntary tithing is off the gross income (NOT NET, PEOPLE), the Catholic Church isn't telling you to sign over the deed to your house.

(4) The rites aren't secretive, nor do you have to pay money to learn about them. You could walk into a Catholic Church right now and watch without being harassed or be charged a fee.

Now, they may be weird and do things you don't like, but that doesn't make them a cult.

/You can substitute "Presbyterian", "Methodist", "Anglican", etc. for "Catholic" in the above points, if you'd like.

How dare you differentiate between a cult and a religion!

You shall now face the full wrath of a shiatload of very silly people on Fark.

The guy at the top is dead. That makes it, and Scientology, religions.

Didn't Jesus come back to life? In fact, I'm pretty sure that's one of the big things regarding Christianity.

He still died, and isn't walking around here now. I don't mind really calling Christianity a cult, but it probably has grown beyond that.

I think once you achieve tax-exempt status your cult days are behind you.

So Scientology ISN'T a cult?

Agh! Didn't know they actually had tax-exempt status in the US. The rest of the more rational world doesn't think so, though. Call them cult-ish.

Other countries, notably Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Belgium and the United Kingdom, refuse to grant Scientology religious recognition.

HA! This is amusing:

Suri is a girl. Catholic priests are much like the late Michael Jackson; they like boys. While I'm sure a priest has maybe somewhere along the line, got grab-handy with a female child, it's about as likely to occur as me voting for a Republican.

Perhaps you can tell me how a baby even has a concept of religion or atheism or anything like that. I'm not the one that made the claim so why should I elaborate. As atheists say, it's not on me to prove a negative. So please prove how a baby would be born atheist. Maybe born agnostic, but I doubt any baby is thinking "THERE'S NO GOD OR HIGHER POWER!".

Today it was revealed that the church, which was founded by L. Rob Hubbard allegedly believes it's most famous celebrity convert has telekinetic and telepathic powers. An investigation by Rolling Stone back in 2006 revealed that he had reached an advanced level of Scientology and was known as an 'Operating Thetan' or an 'OT'. The author of the investigation, Janet Reitman, explained that OTs 'have total control over themselves and their environment. 'OTs can allegedly move inanimate objects with their minds, leave their bodies at will and telepathically communicate with, and control the behaviour of, both animals and human beings.'

. . . . .

Meanwhile, Tom is reportedly 'still reeling' from Katie's decision to leave him, because of the secretive way in which she approached the split. According to People magazine. Katie ensured that every aspect of her decision to leave was kept a secret by using disposable mobile phones, and moving into a new apartment in New York - so that Tom would never have an opportunity to stop the process. A source told People: 'She knew she had to have everything locked down before she pulled the trigger, because there could be no wiggle room if she didn't want this to turn into a long, drawn-out battle. 'Tom was a happy man and thought he had a happy life. He keeps asking, "What's happening?" '

Maybe you should get your money back from the Scientologists, Nostradamus.

ChiWhiteSox_56: Honest question: Can one actually leave the Catholic Church? Sure, you can stop going to mass and distance yourself from it in all kinds of ways. But once you're baptized, aren't you pretty much forever counted as a member of the Catholic church when it's convenient for the Vatican to throw out numbers?

Jesus held up a coin and asked "Whose face is this?"

The pharisee said "It's Caesar's face."

Jesus said "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

So why tithe from your before-tax earnings? Partt of that is Caesar's money. The rest is yours, and that's what you should tithe from.

Do the math: What are you supposed to tithe if you're in a 95% tax bracket? Will Jesus do the whole loaves-and-fishes thing on your paycheck?
