There's more money in letting the Democrat win and obstructing his/her agenda than in winning.

I believe you're overthinking it.

Outsourcing and offshore tax havens are good now that Romney's running. He's only avoiding the draconian and unfair taxes (the rest of pay).

He'd totally repatriate those funds if he didn't have to pay commie taxes.

Good to see someone at Faux News call him out, but it won't really grab peoples' attention until someone like Shep Smith or Hannity brings it up.

The simple act of running for president and not closing those accounts beforehand -- and remember, Mitt Romney has been running for president for more than four years -- is so politically stupid that it should be disqualifying all on its own.

This being Fox news it'll turn out that Romney really has no money in offshore accounts and actually lost all his money attempting to rescue Mormon missionaries held prisoner in Nigeria.

Forget about the optics, which are bad enough. The simple act of running for president and not closing those accounts beforehand -- and remember, Mitt Romney has been running for president for more than four years -- is so politically stupid that it should be disqualifying all on its own.

Ouch.

If he loses, its going to awesome watching the right claim that he just wasn't conservative enough. Hell, they'll probably still run on repealing "Obamacare". Its going to take some cycles before they learn that America has left them behind, I think.

And that's all right with me.

Third airvent on the left, followed by mugging the janitor and using his clothes to gain entrance to the office after hours, then hiding under the deske until Monday morning, subsisting on only the sandwich crumbs on the floor?

In retrospect, Romney would have been a horrible choice, as he would have become the financial collapse personified on a ballot. But McCain didn't know that then and still thought it was a bad idea

So what is the law regarding this? You pay taxes on it when you earned it and you put it offshore but when you try to repatriate that money you pay taxes on it or something ?

Is he being investigated? I mean theres a paper trail with this money, it's listed on his financial forms right?

Or is this just claptrap because noone knows what the fark it means, but it has to be bad cause the villains in James Bond novels always have offshore accounts.....

For corporations with overseas profits, the practice is the let those profits accumulate for a few years, then lobby for a tax holiday for repatriated funds under the justification that this will spur employment. I imagine similar schemes exist for wealthy individuals, especially when the individual's foreign assets are tied to a corporate form.

See:

I'm just talking out of my ass here, but I would assume that in the tax shelter countries you wouldn't have to pay taxes on interest. So if you get 2% on your $30,000,000 bank account, then you have made $60,000 tax free. Which is different from my $30,000 which gave me $60, and I had to pay taxes on it.

Nothing illegal about it as far as I know, it just looks really bad when you are advocating lowering taxes on the rich even more.

wish i had $30,000 in my bank account...

I was thinking the same thing.

In the absence of marching orders, fear and shame can be powerful tools.

Remember this. They can be shamed. And they are mute without talking points to spew. They have no defensive line at all. Their fatal weakness is they can't do anything if their opposition is on the offensive.

The Fark Independents haven't been told how to spin Mitt's offshore accounts yet. Has his campaign really been that blindsided by this? The guy is claiming to love America so much that he wants to lead it, but he keeps most of his money in other countries, and it didn't occur to the powers-that-be in the GOP to come up with a story for it?

Or maybe it's just totally indefensible. Meanwhile, the ads portraying Mitt as the silver-spoon, out-of-touch, vulture-capitalist that he is just happen to be working great for Obama in the polls. What an incredibly candidate you've got there, Republicans.

AdolfOliverPanties: Ouch. Has the GOP ever hated their own nominee this much?

There is really not a snowball's chance in hell of the GOP beating a relatively uncontroversial and well-regarded incumbent in a recovering economy with a record of financially balanced programs (the bailout money's been mostly paid back, for instance). Especially when a lot of the face of the GOP has been the TEA guys and the Birthers in the media.

I don't think the party hates him so much as it's angry at the inevitability of failure and they're taking it out on him. In the case of the news media, they're also probably kind of frustrated that it's not really much of a race this year, which hits Fox, CNN, etc right in the pocketbook.
