You people don't really get it, do you?

Mitt's intent was to irritate the NAACP. That was the whole point of his going.

He knows there is NO chance that he's going to get their vote...so, he engineered a speech designed to cement the votes of people that don't like the NAACP very much (i.e. the Republican base). At the same time, the speech was designed to "impress" moderate suburbanites -- after all he went into the "lion's den" and made his pitch.

Notice when Romney speaks to Latino groups, he doesn't deliver his standard stump speech. That's because he's actually trying to get Latino votes. Romney's message here wasn't aimed at the NAACP, it wasn't aimed at black voters; it was aimed at his base and at moderate suburbanites.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

And before anyone defends him by saying that he was just letting the crowd know it was the end of the G.K. Chesterton quote.... no, that's not how public speaking works.

Also.... did he just quote G.K. Chesterton in front of the NAACP? Chesterton is awesome, but he's the epitome of the white, elite, intellectual, writing, cane-holding, cape-wearing, monocled, cigar-puffing, Catholic, stuffy Englishman. Seems like a bit of an odd choice...

Any time you're tempted to say, "Politicians just pander and say what people want to hear," you now have a counterexample. Romney is making what he intends to do if elected crystal clear, and if he wins he'll have a genuine mandate to do it.

Except that Romney was pandering and saying what people wanted to hear. It just wasn't directed to the people in the room.

Was your friend actually using the mark in interstate or international commerce, or did he have a bona fide intention to do so within six months? If not, his mark would have been rejected on that basis anyway - and he wasted a few hundred taxpayer dollars for his little joke.

I didn't read much of the thread before I posted, looks like people have figured it out now.

Most poor republicans believe that the only thing standing between them and being really wealthy is an intrusive government. they don't necessarily strive to be rich in the sense you might think, but in that case they blame their apathy on knowing that if they did try the evil soscialist commies would just halt their progress.

Man, lots of you people are really terrible at seeing the world from the viewpoint of a poor rural white idiot.

What's not to get? Do you need it animated? What would have happened if Romney went in front of the NAACP and promised to end welfare and food stamps? I'm guessing it would be a different reaction than if he said it at a tea party rally. Is it racist to expect that the reactions would be different?

Don't be so sure. The Tea Party seems to have a lot of people who have the free time to go to a rally at 1PM on a Wednesday.

Not convinced they're all "small business owners."

Actually, I'm beginning to think this was calculated to shore the GOP's rural white base by race-baiting himself publicly in front of the NAACP. His campaign is hoping to gain some racial solidarity among the Teabaggers and court moderates by targeting his message inclusively. looking unafraid to walk into the Babylonian Lions Den to deliver his anti-Obama message. It serves both purposes appealing to different audiences for different reasons. It may have been a stroke of brilliance.

Here is my question Romney's use of "Obamacare" is made to be a very personal attack against Obamam, could of said "Healthcare reform" or "Affordable Care Act" or not even brought it up. So my question is this:

A) Is he so dumb that he thought personalizing attacks against Obama the first black president would go over ok with that audience? (when he was just comparing the policies the audience was actually being very supportive to him)

or

B) He doesn't give a shiat about the black vote knowing that Obama has it locked up and did this ON PURPOSE to shore up more conservatives/racist voters.

I actually think he did it for reason B. I might be being conspiracy theory here but I think it was B.

serpent_sky: FishyFred: And then he won't do it to his face when they debate. It's coded language.

It's openly disrespectful. I've not understood, even from when the "sides" were reversed and President Bush was reelected. I could not believe it happened that way (not that I had any great love for John Kerry or thought he would be the greatest President ever, I just thought he would do less damage).

But even though the man I voted for didn't win, I never wanted to see President Bush fail. Why? Simple. He was the elected leader of the country I live in. His failure would be bad for the country. Bad for most, if not all of us. Very likely bad for me. Why would I want anything but for him to be a success and do good by the country and everyone in it. Every single nutjob on the left who cheered for failures, blunders, and mistakes confused me. You may not have liked it, but he was elected President, and we should at the very least wish for the best and show some respect to the office.

Of course, anything that went on back then pales in comparison to what we've seen the past 3 and a half years.

Quite a few Freepers were saying that he was up in their estimation and that the louder the NAACP booed someone, the more likely they would show up to vote for him. I think this was the dog whistle he was looking for, to seem a little less New England liberal-y.
