The speech will be entirely in Klingon.

HotWingConspiracy: I honestly can't believe he went there to deliver a boilerplate policy speech.

Banal platitudes would have served him better. This is where his slipperiness would have actually been useful.

I think it's very brave of him to campaign this strongly for Obama. I mean, he has produced some of the best ads for his opponent. It's a bold strategy, and this is only another example of his "thinking outside the box"...

Never has a candidate given so much for his rival. Let's all give him a hand folks.

I actually think he did it for reason B. I might be being conspiracy theory here but I think it was B.

For his next trick, Romney is going to put on daredevil outfit, run deep into Harlem, and shout N*****************************GG**********************RS!!!!!

Maybe he was hoping for a more negative reception, which the right wing noisemakers could then use to paint African Americans as hostile and close-minded and in the bag for Obama.

Pretty much. From people at work, I understand Michael Savage and Rush have been hitting up the fact that Obama went to the "gay convention" and the "mexican convention" but only Romney was willing to go to the black's one, that means Obama takes "his people" for granted and only Romney is the real honest person on race relations.

EyeballKid: "Don't worry. My church will pray you into heaven after you die."

"And we haven't thought that you people are the children of Cain and an 'inferior race' for over 30 years now!"

Tenth LDS President Joseph Fielding Smith wrote,

"It was well understood by the early elders of the Church that the mark which was placed on Cain and which his posterity inherited was the black skin. The Book of Moses informs us that Cain and his descendants were black" (The Way to Perfection, p.107).

Smith also stated that

"there is a reason why one man is born black and with other disadvantages, while another is born white with great advantages. The reason is that we once had an estate before we came here, and were obedient; more or less, to the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things there received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful received less" (Doctrines of Salvation 1:61).

For these reasons, Bruce McConkie would write, "The negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain spiritual blessings are concerned, particularly the priesthood and the temple blessings that flow therefrom..." (Mormon Doctrine, p.527, 1966 ed.).

Joseph Fielding Smith stated, "Not only was Cain called upon to suffer, but because of his wickedness he became the father of an inferior race" (The Way to Perfection, p.101). This comment is especially interesting since it was this same Joseph Fielding Smith who also said, "The Latter-day Saints have no animosity towards the Negro. Neither have they described him as belonging to an `inferior race'" (Answers to Gospel Questions 4:170).

The mark of a black skin would be of great importance to the LDS member for it would be the telltale sign as to who was and who was not qualified for celestial exaltation. In his book The Church and the Negro, Assistant church historian John Lund wrote, "It marked Cain as the father of the Negroid race. It also acted as a sign of protection for Cain and set his seed apart from the rest of Adam's children so there would be no intermarriage."

SkinnyHead: Most dishonest politicians will change their message to appeal to whatever group they are talking to. It's certainly refreshing to see a candidate with the strength to stand by his position, even when he knows that his position it unpopular with the group he is addressing.

"I believe that if you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real, enduring best interest of African-American families, you would vote for me for president."

No he was actually lying to them because he cannot communicate what he really believes. Because he would lose his base if he came out as the moderate left person that he is. RomneyCare and Gun Control are his political legacies and he can't claim them.

or

B) He doesn't give a shiat about the black vote knowing that Obama has it locked up and did this ON PURPOSE to shore up more conservatives/racist voters.

What Mitt knows how to connect with the blacks. Just look:

images.huffingtonpost.com
Romney marching in a Martin Luther King Day parade in Jacksonville, Florida. And just like his dad, here's Mitt quoting a line from the Baha Men, wondering jovially and entirely without context: "Who let the dogs out?" Followed up with an enthusiastically- barked "Whoo! Whoo!"

Lionel Mandrake: JerseyTim: He'll probably see another fund raising spike from this.

That's what I thought. He's not going to get these people to vote for him anyway, so might as well rile up the Real Americans.

This

Reading through the comments top to bottom, looking for this one. His remarks were for the conservative base not the NAACP. He knows he can't get the NAACP vote, but he scored points with the base, especially after they booed him.

2012-07-11 04:03:54 PM
The booing was one thing - it was the fact that he stood there, paralyzed, biting his lip for eighteen straight seconds afterwards. The man was genuinely, honestly surprised that his words were not greeted with a round of frantic applause, and he literally couldn't think of what to say next.

It's one of the BIG rules of public speaking - you let them cheer, but you step on booing. It's never a good idea to stand there po-faced for eighteen straight seconds while *giving a speech.* That was a little scary.

And I'm sure that his handlers told him, almost word for word, what Skinnyhead told us, the second he popped back into the echo chamber. Great speech, Mitt, that took a lot of courage.

2012-07-11 04:04:13 PM
Actually, I'm beginning to think this was calculated to shore the GOP's rural white base by race-baiting himself publicly in front of the NAACP. His campaign is hoping to gain some racial solidarity among the Teabaggers and court moderates by targeting his message inclusively. looking unafraid to walk into the Babylonian Lions Den to deliver his anti-Obama message. It serves both purposes appealing to different audiences for different reasons. It may have been a stroke of brilliance.

Don't Troll Me Bro!: Vodka Zombie: Oh jesus fark... And then he goes on to cite a survey from the Chamber of Commerce?!?

::facepalm::

I honestly feel badly for this idiot. If I were in his shoes, I'd probably have a raging drinking problem and a phone-book sized binder full of domestic abuse complaints.

I'd imagine he has the first, which is only kept hidden due to the massive amount of money people stand to lose if the public finds out. He would probably have the second, if not for money keeping the biatch quiet.

He does seem to be rather red faced on occasion.
