"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified the misuse of these powerful painkillers as an epidemic, with 1.3 million emergency room visits in 2010, a 115% increase since 2004. Overdose deaths on opioid pain relievers surpassed deaths from heroin and cocaine for the first time in 2008"

Legal pills are killing more people than street drugs like heroin and cocaine now, seen this one coming for years. Various pharms are more of a gateway drug than pot nowadays easily, though booze probably trumps both, at least where I grew up.

/Give these poor bastards access to safe legal alternatives like cannabis and they number of asshats popping pills and croaking would shrink

I used to hate heroin addicts, but by the time they are shooting it up, they know what they are into.

Popping pills that Dr. Feelgood prescribes for you because he gets a bonus from the drug companies every time he does, is just pathetic, and makes being hooked on nice mass produced pills from a factory make it seem okay, even good for you..

Um, self control has nothing to do with physical addiction which you can get through taking oxycontin or something of similar potency as perscribed. Self control has nothing to do with it. Maybe it isn't the pills, but the doctors are to blame for sure. Don't believe me, live in Florida for a while and see all the pill mills and doctor shopping.

They should start something like the credit bureaus for controlled medications. Fill as prescribed, no hiccups, for ten years? Yeah, here's three days extra because you're going out of town.

Consistently switching doctors and pharmacies, needing early refills, and pissing dirty? Yeah, you get to fill them a week at a time, no flexibility.

Best way I can think of combining responsible control needed for the abuse-prone patients, and lack of hassle for the rest of us.

Same thing with Sudafed. I farking hate meth addicts, but it still pisses me off I can't get a packet of sudafed after 8pm. Make it OTC again, but track who buys it, and that information is provided to law enforcement and is enough to establish probable cause if you're in the top 10% of buyers.

Jump though hoops, sign contracts, feel like a criminal at the doctor's or at the pharmacy, pee in a cup, etc, etc. And then there's the crowd that feels you're supposed to suck it up. Then there's the crowd that felt that way, had an accident, got addicted, then found Jesus and his twelve steps and THEN berate you. And of course the crowd that actually believes docs give pain pills away like candy (based on hysterical media reports), while the DEA looks over their shoulder and audits them four times a year.

Very I spent most of last year and the early part of this year trying to get lortab. Apparently, a 19-year history of constant pain isn't enough, but the magic words "hurts like hell" are. Of course, it was a no-refill prescription, and the pain and pressure increased over the duration of five weeks of knee injections, so my 30-pill supply was toast early. The shots lasted 3 months (out of a projected 6+), so after two weeks of getting used to peak pain, I called begging. Another no-refill script ("We're not a pain management facility", their literature says), and it's basically toast in a little over two weeks. I hate being treated as though I have a drug problem, when the only reason I take them is to function as pain-free as possible. As it is, I'll often wait until almost 2:30/3pm before popping one, even though I've been up since 5:30, and I work an average of 70+ hours between two jobs. I've got to find myself a hack, script-happy doc before I do a Cobain impersonation.

2012-07-11 02:25:56 PM
Personally, after seeing how many people in my area are addicted to pills, I don't think it so much matters WHAT prescription painkiller as it does just prescription pain killers in general. I can take half a lower dose Percoset and go curl up in bed and nap for a few hours, and the pain killing effects last all day. Then I hear of people using half their monthly OxyContin prescription up in a day and wonder what exactly they're going to do on day four when they've been out of drugs for over 24 hours and are starting to hurt. They need $60 for a single pill (that they use 4 of at a time) and have just spent all their money on going to the pain clinic and getting their prescription filled (hundreds of dollars total)..what do you think they're going to do? Rip someone off, of course! Or they might go to heroin just to stave off the withdrawals for another few hours when they can't afford any more pills. But pot is deadly dangerous and anyone smoking a joint is obviously sick and in need of drug and alcohol rehabilitation and/or jail time. Just remember that next time you see someone get a felony conviction over a joint, while there are probably millions of people shooting up their pain pill prescriptions they got from pill mills.

Sorry, rant over. Pain pills are a serious thing around here. That and meth.

Quite the opposite. I find it sad that even pain medicine has to be politicised. I may have misheard my pain doc when he told me he's audited four times a year.
It might have been just three times.

Also I've just realised something. You live in Fla which is rife with unscrupulous docs who like to cash in, so I will agree that I was wrong on that point. It's not all docs. I guess I've been (un) lucky enough to find doctors that had a healthy fear of the federal govt up here in dreary old NH.

Why do you even want cannabis legalized? For all the asshats who say "I support legalization but XXX makes me want to vote AGAINST legalization," you're doing it wrong. If you would come to support the harassment and imprisonment of peaceful Americans for smoking a harmless relaxant, because of a comment on the internet, you really fail to understand what is wrong with the state of cannabis legality. "Let's throw away $8+ billion a year of taxpayer money in a recession on harmless cannabis, sounds like a good idea, that'll show those greasy potheads on the internet. I've known so many people who have died from overdosing. Opana has killed most of them, Oxycontin is not far behind though. I never touch pills myself, Ive seen too many bad things. To be honest, the ones who have ODed are the lucky ones, the ones who are still "alive" have it worse by far. So many children taken by the state, so many parents going through hell.
And don't get me started on the ones who get "cleaned up" in rehab and think that makes them better than everyone else. I know people who think about not doing drugs more than a drug addict thinks about doing them. Then they become super christian (due to the brainwashing nature of AA/NA) and tell everyone they're going to hell.
In summation:

My father about three years ago had back surgery and was in pain pretty much 24/7. His doctor gave him a couple of Tylenol 3's for his pain, which didn't even touch it. His other doctor had sympathy and told my family the real story behind the few Tylenol 3's for major back surgery. Doctors are afraid to prescribe things nowadays. There's so many lawsuits, so many license revocations due to narcotics, so many junkies...the average doctor has too much on their minds to risk giving our narcotic pain meds. You give out too much of a dose, someone dies. You give out too little of a dose, someone's pain might not be managed well. You give it out too often, well now everyone and their brothers are coming to you with all kinds of little undetectable injuries because your name got posted on an Internet forum or texted out to friends as someone that will prescribe narcotic pain meds. It's to the point where junkies are the only ones that can jump through the hoops to get real pain meds, while people in real pain can't even afford it.

I had some terrible pain some time back from a motorcycle accident in which I broke 6 bones in my left leg. The pain specialist I went to gave me Dilaudid (Hydromorphone).
It was dirt cheap (60 tabs for like $15), and worked FAR better than Oxycontin, Lortab, Morphine, or anything else they tried for relieving pain. It didn't mess me up and I could work without feeling weird.
I asked my Doc why none of my regular MDs had never prescribed it, and he said "no patent and no one makes any money on it"
Figures.

I swear to FSM that stupid asshole high-seekers have to ruin it for everyone else. Some of us are genuinely physically farked up and need relief (even if it is momentary). I have to suck it up and take weakass percoset because NONE of the pharmacies in my general area can get their Oxycontin requests filled due to shortages.

I have no doubt those shortages are because of people like Rush Limpdick and middle aged-bleach-blonde-soccer moms festering in suburbia.

It's just really frustrating to know that relief is out there but you can't have it because some other jerks have abused it.

I'm sure i'm not alone here.

Im with you on most of your rant however as someone who does not process most pills well, there are certain people who realy do need to take 4-6 pain pills at a time just to feel some relief. As someone who has had chronic knee pain for years and over the past months a back injury from a serious car injury I can tell ya that 4 high dose percs would just take the edge off for me.
