I have to wonder what he actually said by [connect with the black community].

The RNC has done very little since I left office to:

- soul search
- watch episodes of The Jeffersons
- find some tokens to be seen with
- give money to Allen West
- pay for trips to strip clubs

I can see why that's gramatically confusing, but it actually is more like "The RNC has done very little to connect with the black community since I left office."

It's hard to connect with people you're actively working to suppress.

Meh, the "black community" shouldn't consider themselves separate from the rest of us.

Maybe the southern "white community" should stop flying their Confederate flags all over the place.

The difference between a group like the NAACP and a group like the KKK is intent. The NAACP was not founded on the principal that black people were better than white people, or that white people were inherently inferior to blacks. Black people have been kept separate from us, in one form or another, since the first slave ships arrived in the 17th century. First it was legally due to slavery and then Jim Crow laws, now it's economically. So the NAACP still serves a purpose to the African-American community. There's nothing wrong with there being organizations to help black people in the United States find some measure of equality.

What good purpose do "white" groups like the KKK serve in this country, aside from malignant racism?

Is this the same Michael Steele who marched lockstep with the GOP until he was gone as chairman, then suddenly he's going on the Daily Show talking about how they muzzled him and none of it was his fault?

They organized a Doobie Brothers concert and exhaustive research has proven that black people love the Doobies so much they'd risk committing felonies to enjoy such music!

Caught Romney's speech to the NAACP.

He did...OK. Alot of repetition, but carefully edited for the audience. Again, you just don't buy that his heart is behind his words.

His reception was positive but cautious. You could tell his words were being carefully parsed by the delay and volume of applause.

His only truly bad moment was saying he'd "repeal Obamacare." What a farking nitwit. You know it's going to be unpopular position for that audience - at least don't call it "Obamacare" like a freaking FoxNews bobblehead.

When I was growing up. The principal was your pal, but you steered clear of the assistant principal, who was responsible for dealing with "problems".

Speaking of outreach, I thought it was pretty clever to put up a Latino outreach page picturing a group of Asian kids. Two birds, one stone! Now that's fiscally responsible!

Why does the GOP even bother? It's not like their voters care about that sort of thing, and literally no one else outside of the GOP's specific audience is fooled.

To be fair, the GOP also did very little before and during your term as RNC Chair to connect with the black community.

Simply hiring you for the job wasn't even an attempt, it was just an eye-rollingly transparent gesture.

The RNC has done very little since I left office to [connect with the black community]

A tacit admission by Steele that he was purely a novelty hire in the "Lookee here, we got one too" sense.

Indirect honesty is refreshing albeit indirect.

It's a long term concern. They worry that as long as they are seen as strictly the party of old, fat white guys, it could cost them young voters, who will inevitably become older voters..
