Aren't a lot of those expensive private colleges? Oberlin lists tuition as $44k. Total with room and board is $57K. Considering that damn dirty hippies don't have jobs, I'm not sure how they're going to afford that.

Interesting that most of those "hippie colleges" are among the finest schools in the country and are very hard to get into. I guess hippies aren't just a bunch of stoner Doors throwbacks after all.

Warren Wilson College - the only guy I knew who went there was a talented and smart individual, but the last time I heard from him he was picking apples in Washington state for a living. Which is nice, I guess, but not exactly a career. As I recall, he spent his years there smoking dope and being an annoying David Bowie fan. The rankings were based on the liberal political views of students, high levels of acceptance of the gay community on campus, low levels of popularity for student government, and a student body that is not considered very religious.

This is the stupidest criteria I've ever seen. And WTF is Beloit College doing on this list?

Was UC Santa Cruz on the list? If not, it is a fail. It doesn't get much more hippy than Santa Cruz, and not just the school but the surrounding community. It's Groovy Mecca.

10. New College of Florida, Sarasota FL 825 undergrads
9. Eugene Lang College: The New School for Liberal Arts, NYC. 1439 undergrads
8. Bard College at Simon's Rock, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. 380 undergrads
7. Beloit College, Beloit WI. 1300 undergrads
6. Colorado College, Colorado Springs CO. 2011 undergrads
5. Bennington College, Bennington VT. 686 undergrads
4. Reed College, Portland OR. 1442 undergrads
3. Oberlin College, Oberlin OH. 2800 undergrads
2. Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa NC. 900 undergrads
1. Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville NY. 1235 undergrads

Two slides per college, some of which seem to have almost nothing to do with the school. Especially Warren Wilson.

Smoking pot and hairy clams are bad now?

Man, things have changed since I was in school.

2012-07-11 12:55:53 PM
Of course not, Subby. The list is for colleges not hipster crèches that give away "degrees" for participation and that no one outside of Evergreen treats as a record of actual academic study.

/Reed barely qualifies, barely.

2012-07-11 12:56:26 PM
Many of these places are either in NYC or out in the boonies, both idyllic settings for the neo bohemian. One exception to this is Colorado College. One must truly be a dedicated hippy to maintain one's hippitude there for you are surrounded by Focus on the Family, Fort Carson (US Army), Cheyenne Mountain (USAF & NORAD), and the rigidly conservative US Air Force Academy.

Of course, you've got University of Colorado, Boulder, right up the road, that's that's known as Rocky Mountain Berkeley, so you can always call for reinforcements.

2012-07-11 12:58:44 PM
Reed is not the biggest hippie college in Portland, OR. Lewis & Clark College is by a wide margin.

2012-07-11 01:08:12 PM
Huh. Couldn't see a damn thing on the page. Site uses so much scripting that it's nothing but a blank white sheet.

Is Beloit not liberal and/or full of hippies? I've heard it's pretty eccentric... Especially with regard to the campus squirrels...

Come to think of it, that list may be more "most eccentric colleges."

CSB: I used to live on the TESC campus, when my parents attended in the 70's. It's a cool place and despite its reputation has a great program. There are some serious idiots on the faculty but you can find those anywhere you go.

Also geoduck is tasty.

2012-07-11 01:23:23 PM
Also stupid is the criteria that the student government must be unpopular and the student body unreligious. What if your whole program, including the student government and the faculty are granola headed, be-sandaled, filthy hippies? And what if they're all steeped in a variety of non-traditional, new-age religions and take great joy in their debauched pagan revelries. Orgies and drug-fueled naturist rituals, most likely. Probably have a symbolic ceremony each Fall whereby some nubile first-year freshman woman is "sacrificed" by being "impaled" on the erection of the dean of students while he's dressed as Pan or the Greenman or some such thing. And everyone smokes reefer and cheers them on.

I don't suppose that would make their clever little list, now would it?

That pic of New College... let me laugh even harder.

Palm Court looks nothing like that during the regular school year. Not pictured: used heroin syringes, passed out/near death alcohol poisonings, general scum and garbage because policing your own rave is for "the staff", +- 100 smashed 40s on the ground; glass everywhere, student strapped to a palm tree still tripping on E/acid/DMT, etc...

Also not pictured: useless degrees in "womyn studies", gardening, et al...

Such a great education for the money.

I'll have to check to see if it's still open (I heard about financial problems a few years ago), but Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio was truly a place where the 70's never ended. I drove a truck through there in the late 80's, and there were hippies everywhere, sitting on street corners, playing music, and an honest-to- God flowered VW microbus running around.

2012-07-11 04:05:06 PM
I almost went to Reed, but then I figured out that they didn't offer degree programs in anything of value to me or to society at large.

/I wish that was sarcasm

I went to Evergreen for a semester, a time period which happened to include the 9/11 attack. That school is really surreal. All these little snot-nosed kids seemed to be competing to been seen as the most Anti-American. They'd have these ridiculous "protest rallies" on the central plaza (actually named "Red Square") where they'd 'preach to the choir' while pretending that it was 1968 and they were facing down the guards outside the Pentagon.

Every day I'd see things like a kid sitting in a niche in the foundation of a building, blowing into a digery-doo, some deluded Communist (seriously) girl trying to explain that East Germany was really a worker's paradise and only became run-down after the Capitalists took it over, American flag stickers in the urinals, and signs forbidding perfume but making no mention of the overpowering stench of unwashed body that some of the students exhibited.

Just to be an iconoclastic rebel (hey, I was in college, that's what you do, right?) I put a big "proud to be an American" sticker on my binder that I carried to class each day.

To be fair though, the academic instruction (I was majoring in computer science) was actually quite good.

Why not this progressive institution of renowned study in lesser-known compositions?

I used to visit my best friend down there quite a bit (03-06 ish) and everything you say is quite right. He lived in the mods, which was a weird combination of summer camp and a trailer park.

My favorite part was the "food not bombs" people who would dumpster dive for food and then feed it to unsuspecting people! And they weren't even doing it to be funny.
