I wonder if there will be any correlation at all between people's outrage over this and their outrage over how much money States "waste" on taxpayer-funded handouts like child welfare, mental health, and family counseling services.

I think that bars are actually in the Tennessee safe haven law. But the place has to serve good beer. Wouldn't want the kid's first beer to be Coors Light.

With all the cuts in social programs what do people expect?

I doubt this mother would have abandoned her daughter if she had the necessary supports to care for her. She cared for the young woman for 19 years and clearly cared about her. She came forward, obviously she regretted it. I can't imagine the pressure she was under when she left her daughter.

2012-07-11 12:54:48 PM
Sounds like either the mother really needs some support or the daughter is better off without her.

2012-07-11 12:56:04 PM
Messed up. Really messed up. Her "mother" could have gotten help from Social Services. There were otehr options. This story could have had a really tragic ending, and it's incredible that nothing bad happened to this poor girl in the meantime.

On a side note... really wanna mess with an "pro-life" protester? Get in their face and demand to know how many severely diabled/special needs children they have adopted.

She made a return trip to Tennessee to speak with police and still left her daughter there. She clearly didn't regret it. I don't disagree with the need for more services, though.

Gods, why couldn't MY mother just leave me at a BAR?! They do not serve beer at "Toys R Us". :(

Eva Cameron was by herself during both trips to Tennessee, Smith said. Police have no idea why Eva Cameron chose to drive to Tennessee with her daughter. Eva Cameron has no known relatives in the area.

Same reason one town busses its homeless to the next town: BeCAUSE they don't give a shiat/know anything about the other town.

The article clearly states she had another special needs child and simply couldnt take on both...further bolstering the argument for more services.

Had she left her in a hospital, fire station, police station, social service office, etc. fine. I'd have sympathy.

She left her at a bar. A bar. This woman-child is 100% defenseless, and could never have reported an assault had she run into the wrong drunk.

For leaving her at a bar instead of a safe place, Mom sucks. Hard. Shame be upon her.

That's gotta be shiatty situation to begin with. Most people who have children aren't expecting that they'll end up taking care of what is essentially a permanent child. I've known a few families that had children with developmental issues like this and it takes a serious toll on the entire family as the focus ends up being caring for the disabled child.

I'm not saying that it excuses her leaving her daughter at a bar... but I can understand how frustration could play into her choices and how she might end up making the decision she did.

Why did the article say the police had no idea why she did this?

"Eva, who couldn't be reached by msnbc.com, told Illinois' Northwest Herald on Tuesday that her church had directed her to Caryville because it had a large concentration of Baptists. She also said Tennessee "has the No.1 health care system in the United States of America," and she wanted Lynn to have the best care."

I saw this on the news today. CNN was reporting she came to TN to take advantage of our great healthcare. Yeah she was misinformed.

Still I thought TN doesn't need another stupid story to make my home state sound dumb; then I saw it was The Big Orange Bar and died a little inside.

My husband gets paid for less than 60 hours a MONTH to care for our disabled son. That is all the time the government thinks it takes. Of course to stick him in a state run facilty would cost the government thousands of dollars a month, but try telling them that. We love him, so we could never do what this woman did,or have him not live with us, but the truth is, Uncle Sams doesn't give a rat's @ss about our special needs community.

Depsite all that, this woman is a douche. You don't treat your children like trash and dump them like an abandoned kitten. There are easier ways to get your adult children in a group home.

The article doesn't tell us a whole lot about the mother's situation and life... I understand your reaction and all, but it's quite possible what the mother did WAS in the best interest of her daughter...

Why is he getting paid at all? Where is that money coming from?

I just love the notion that my tax money is being taken from me and given to someone else, and they think the situation is unfair. I'm not saying that it's your fault that the kid is...whatever...but it sure isn't my fault. And that's money that I don't get to spend on MY child.

Reward the fail!

What a terrible human being. And the mother isn't much better.

And what's with not waiting another two years, until the kid could at least get a drink?

Can you get checked off as a private provider or work with a private provider to get on as an in-home extension of their agency and then have your son admitted to the agency and placed with you?
