I heard a mention of this on NPR a little while ago. Hope it's not too serious, whatever it turns out to be.

Sounds like someone's got a case of the Mondays.

I feel bad - I didn't even know he was gone. Who is he again?

It took me a moment, subby!

Zoinks!

I'm of two minds on this.

1.People have a right to expect their elective representative to do his job and information explaining why he is not.

2. It appears that Rep. Jackson is in some sort of crisis which impairs his decision making capability. However, Rep. Jackson is also the only one who can authorize release of information about what his condition is, and the only one who can decide when and if he returns to office. Forcing such a decision on a man who may not be in a position to make a reasoned long term decision seems unseemly to me.

Was the [SICK] tag unable to show up for work? Does it get paid time off also?

2012-07-11 08:57:41 AM
Seems like he may be fighting an addiction.

2012-07-11 08:58:36 AM
Based on this and the TPM article, I'm going to go with a painkiller/antidepressant cocktail addiction, capped off with an OD.

The last thing anyone should do is push him back into office. Let the guy resign with dignity and take time to repair his mental state.

Isn't "exhaustion" spin code for "addicted to pills"?

Doubtful. Now please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think one of the first things Republicans did when they regained the house was close the House on Mondays and Fridays.

"Irregardless" of what is ailing him, hopefully Rep. Jackson will make a full recovery sooner rather than later.

Of course, the ethics investigation case has nothing to do with that case of the Mondays.

I can't wait for the right wing venom about this. Hopefully the guy's ok.

Maybe, just this once, a politician going into reclusive mode won't end up being the inevitable drug/sex/alcohol scandal.

I wanted to say something snarky...as this is the place for such things.

But I find the comments on Politico disturbing.

Unexpected? No. But damnit, there are places for trolling comments. Can't adults just post adult comments on certain sites? Can't even go to CNN without reading comments better suited to 12 year olds being dicks to hide their insecurities.

That being said, "exhaustion" is such a bullshiat statement. there are diseases that cause exhaustion. There are mental problems that make one feel exhausted. But it in itself is not a "thing".

When I see someone is going to be away for a long time because of exhaustion, I assume severe mental breakdown or drugs....lots and lots of drugs.

You don't need to have legislative sessions when your only policy goals are doing nothing and making the president look bad at any cost.

It's everywhere. I can't read an article about something completely nonpolitical on my local newspaper's website (e.g., "holiday concert this weekend downtown"), without having to see a comment trail thereafter containing a stream of absolutely retarded political comments.

Why can't it be both? Mental illness frequently leads to self-medication.

Quit talking about it like it's a medical condition. In this country, we consider any drug abuse (by a minority) to be irresponsible criminal behavior.

And mental illness doesn't exist. There are two types of people - good Americans, and criminals.

I really don't get it. Most of these site require registration, and the entire internet is just stuffed with the same shiat over and over. It seems like it would take pathological devotion to post this much inanity internet wide.

Fark is positively enlightened compared to most comment sections.

Given that Jesse, Jr. was apparently trying to maneuver things so he got the seat, he shouldn't be stressed as he knows what he did and said.

Unless what he did and said was criminal....

I don't have a a lot of love for the Jackson family, as Jesse, Sr.'s only real claim to fame is, "I was standing next to Martin when he got shot", something which was true of about half a dozen people.

Suicide attempt? Drug addiction?

Unexplained medical leave remains unexplained.

He's the son of one our nation's biggest hucksters and scamsters, and hails from an area rife with corrupt politicians who are arrested literally almost on a yearly basis. You don't have to be Rush Limbaugh or Dick Cheney to be suspect of this guy.

Nothing. I really wasn't going for a "but but Palin." I was just contrasting their individual grifting styles. Jackson is like an old-timey tent show preacher and snake-oil salesman, and Palin is like someone who stuffs nail polish in her bra while her kids create a distraction in the mall.

Also, don't confuse Jesse Jackson, Sr, with Al Sharpton. While the two may seem identical to many (white) people, their goals and methods are quite different.

Alright, I can get behind that. Palin isn't anywhere near the three card monte dealer that Jackson is. She doesn't have the brains or experience to pull it off. Jesse and Al were schooled in that shiat decades ago, before Palin was even born. That's why she's scuffled off into relative obscurity under the roar of snow-machines. She's not no game left.

They are? I'm interested in hearing the difference. If they're so different, it probably doesn't help that they frequently appear together at the same events, or so it seems.

Nice to see you don't worry about the difference between facts and what you want to believe.

I'd say the most obvious difference is that Rev Al started out as a old-time huckster/preacher and has become, in recent years, a useful member of the political scene in NYC while Rev Jesse started out with the best of intentions and has sunk into a morass of personal and political entanglements in recent years.

I was simply giving you the benefit of the doubt with that remark. Jesse and Al DO appear together. That's not speculation, it's fact. Now, I'm not going to argue with you about what they do and how they do it, because you probably know better than me, but when you show up to events together, people are going to assume you both have the same smell on you.

I didn't say they didn't. But you indicated that they appeared together "frequently" and then added a caveat that that was how it "seems" to you. Now you're supporting your argument with a series of pictures which are fundamentally anecdotal at best.

They do show one thing, if you know your history: 30 years ago, Sharpton was riding Jesse's coattails, and now it's the other way round.

To quoth 5723michael:

Anytime you got a movement and the speakers consist of...preachers, you know that movement is going nowhere. Preachers, as we all know, have been lining their pockets ever since the slave plantation.

Link

This is pretty much true whether they're black or white. Anyone who has parlayed preaching into millions of dollars off the backs of stupid and poor people who follow them are almost certainly criminals. Jesse and Al are no different than the Peter Popoffs, Benny Hinns, and Jimmy Swaggarts of the world. They've been busted stealing money, living in mansions, farking whores, doing drugs, and people STILL give them money.
