The year was 1988. I had just moved into the dorms at West Chester University. At the time, I had a genuine love of the music and message of Bob Marley. It took exactly 3 days of drunken frat boys bellowing along to the endless loop of the Legend album to break (possibly forever) that love and appreciation.

FTFA: Reggae immortal Bob Marley has joined Barack Obama and Elvis Presley in the elite club of those who have biological species named in their honour.

I know that there's a louse named after Gary Larson. It was in the forward to one of his books.

Could someone please photoshop one of those big coconut crabs wearing a yellow, black and green 'Rasta' hat and dreadlocks? Seems appropriate.

uhm... defensive much?

i spent a few years there and worked with a lot of people from a few labs extraneous to various college / university programs. i did not meet a single bob marley fan. as a matter of fact, i would be surprised to find one among the people i worked with. furthermore, i met individuals that believed jews had horns that were removed at birth and spoke fondly of white-pride organizations.

it's a very strange convergence of very strange things - a dude from ASU finds a freaky bug and names it bob marley. it's perfectly valid for someone to draw strange inferences from this.

as i said, i don't get it. i didn't assert that it was driven by bigotry - i doubt the guy is a raging asshole and willing to telegraph it in such a way, but it's strange. and yes, one of the inferences i drew was that it might be bigotry.

forgive me if i have a low opinion of my fellow man.

Impossible. Jonesboro is just the other side of the state from Boggy Creek. That's where Marley lives.

It took me nearly 10 years after college to actually appreciate Bob Marley b/c of the same situation.
