As the article clearly states, it was Tilikum, not Shamu, who was involved in the trainer's death.

Shamu died years ago. The current holder of the name is at least the second, if not third to be given it.

They better hope that "n" never falls off the sign

Why? Can killer whales read?

Maybe just fix the sign now, and promote it as "Don't die with Shamu."

Then you can blame the guest for any future incidents: "They didn't follow instructions, your honor!"

I'm not exactly sure why OSHA is handling this case as a simple violation of occupational standards. Cetacean intelligence, which measures the cognitive power of whales, shows that these massive creatures have advanced brain functions. They are capable of communicating with one another, solving problems, and choosing between right and wrong. Orca whales, especially those in captivity, have shown a long and repetitive history of harming human beings. Why this creature wasn't charged with murder by the Orange County Sheriff's Department shows the complete incompetence of Florida in general.

I know that if I was Dawn Brancheau's father, I wouldn't have been able to stop myself from pumping that motherfarker full of armor piercing rounds. Too bad he's a coward and took a fat check from Seaworld over justice for his daughter.

Who knew a killer whale could be so dangerous?

Does OSHA hassle horse trainers every time one gets kicked? Cattle ranchers that get trampled?

Big animals are inherently dangerous. That's the job.

"Tilikum, a killer whale, grabbed Brancheau and dragged underwater by her ponytail during a show in November 2010"

What a sucky way to die. The only way that could be worse is maybe another whale grabbed one of her feet and they played tug, tearing her body in two in an oddly serene slow-motion mess akin to the removal of a fingernail in a glass of Chardonnay. Maybe if she had poison ivy while this was happening it might be worse still.

It saddens me.

There is no "Shamu" anymore. They call all the whales "Shamu" as a sort of title I guess you'd say. No matter which whale is performing, he/she is always called Shamu, and the babies are always called Baby Shamu. Usually the individual names are not publicly shared, though they're no secret either.

And if you're killed in the process of working with these creatures, what can you say? Nothing. They're called Killer Whales for a reason. Plus, you're dead.

CSB:
I went to a Killer Whale show at Sea World in Orlando a few years back - they had to stop the show in the middle because one whale was misbehaving. And by misbehaving I mean not following the routine and getting aggressive with the trainer.
This was after the incident where the other whale (Tilikum?) grabbed a trainer, brought her down to the bottom of the tank and dismembered her. Good times.

SeaWorld Orlando's 'Dine with Shamu' program has reopened for the first time since Dawn Brancheau's death on Tuesday-- the same day the park appealed citations in the trainer's death.

I read that sentence and thought she died Tuesday and they immediately appealed the citations and reopened.

Done in one.

FWIW Tillicum has killed 3 people now. One in Victoria, BC (UVIC student) 1991, one in 1994 (at Sea World) and one more recently, can't remember the exact year. 2010 I believe.

This is what happens when you put a hunter in a cage. You can take the whale out of the hunter but you can't take the hunter out of the whale.

Sea World is a despicable company.

Funny thing is (IIRC) there has never been a documented attack on a human by a killer whale in the wild. Guess maybe they just get a bit pissy after being stuck in a little pool and prodded into doing tricks...

2012-07-11 12:10:38 PM
All of the adult whales take turns with the Shamu name. They do this so that if one of the whales isn't up to performing that day or is misbehaving, they can just pass off the star duties to another whale.
