There are things in dollar stores that cost more than a dollar.

2012-07-11 09:03:48 AM
You also may be missing out on sub-standard crap made in China (much of it containing high levels of lead and/or melamine), expired food, and other assorted crap that even Goodwill and other charities reject.

In fact, Dollar General had the best deals on Jif peanut butter, Planters mixed nuts, a box of Lipton iced tea, Heinz ketchup and a two-liter bottle of Coca Cola,

And we wonder why America is filled with fat asses.

I know a store where everything is 98 cents.

Additionally, shopping at a Dollar Store does not require dressing up as though traveling to Wal-Mart.

Put the Sunday burlap sacks back into the shed, we're going to the dollar store!

Depends on the dollar store. 99 Cents Only still keeps everything at a dollar (though they cheated on their name a bit, since they now charge 99.99 cents for each item).

2012-07-11 09:32:18 AM
Here's where I rant a bit: Why do some people assume that an item has value just because it's cheap?

"Hey, look at this novelty foam "TV brick" covered in cloth of my favorite sports teams colors. Isn't it great, it only cost me a dollar!"
"Do you often throw things at your $1000, 50" plasma TV?"
"....no"
"Do you have any other possible need for a ~square foot of cloth covered foam?"
"Well....no...BUT IT WAS ONLY A DOLLAR!"
"Yeah I get that, but now you have a worthless piece of foam sitting around your house service no purpose. You would have been better off lighting that dollar on fire: At least then you would have had one less thing to move or throw away at some point in the future."

Just because something is cheap, doesn't mean you need or even want it.

If they are dollar stores, then frigging everything is a dollar store. They have $20 items in there! That's like luxury shopping!

Whole lotta this. Thing is, most people are so conditioned to chase that purchase high that they can rationalize buying anything just to get that little hit.

It's even better when people congratulate themselves for selling their old accumulated shiat on ebay. Hooray, you got $5 for that mango corer you never use! Never mind that it cost you $11.99 originally; you got an acquisition high twice from the same object!

two of the worst ways to spend a dollar: dollar store and strippers' g-string.

dollar store is crap. you can find cheaper stuff at walmart, not that I like walmart.

You're lucky that it's too hard to own possessions on that small pedestal way up there

ha ha ha. I love that. My mom is the biggest offender. I tried to do the math for her, but she refuses to believe she's not getting the best deal in the world. Six packs for water for ONLY $1!!! Yeah, but mom - the same stuff is at the grocery store for $3.68 a case.... Then I get the mother look like she's sorry she raised an idiot and tells me about the great deal she got on cleanser (that costs .79 at Walmart). I give up.

Lotta jokes at the expense of dollar stores, but seriously if you don't lose your mind there are several things you really should be getting.

1. computer cables for 1.50 to 2.50 really no better deal
2. things like a salt / pepper shaker combo or spices for 1.00 great for traveling.
3. hand soap for the office in their own little pump bottles.
4. bottled water way cheaper than 7/11 when you need one with lunch.

Don't buy stationary though, that stuff is usually in smaller packs, like 3 post it pads, that is actually cheaper at staples in larger quantities.

dollar tree/99c only/etc are awesome for parties/potlucks/etc...aluminum disposable cooking pans, balloons, streamers, party favors, greeting cards for when you don't care to send the very best...also things like cleaning sprays...some of those brands like l.a.'s totally awesome are as good as the more expensive brands...in some cases even better
