(Daily Mail)   With the commercialization of the Olympics in recent years, it's good to reflect on the good old days, when pygmies, cannibals and tribesmen had the opportunity to compete too   (dailymail.co.uk ) divider line

It's pretty sad that some people are discriminated today just because of their dietary requirements.

Pretty interesting story. Not so cool that the article tips completely over and tries to show the athletic superiority of blacks over whites, though.

Funny thing is, the St. Louis Olympics were held during a world's fair and barely got any attention, also the games were supposed to be in Chicago but got shifted to St. Louis because the fair organizers threatened to host their own sporting event to eclipse the games, because well they were jerks. And Sullivan had absolutely no interest in following the Olympic charter or the ideals of Pierre de Coubertin, the man who founded the modern Olympics. Also de Coubertin wasn't too thrilled with how the St. Louis fair people handled the whole issue of getting the games. And they weren't exactly well publicized, didn't have much in the way of international competition etc and if not for Coubertin's own grit and deep pockets, might have been the end of the Olympic revival. Fortunately, there's was the intercalated games of 1906 in Athens which managed to get things going the right way and then the 1908 Olympics in London really got things going.

I hate the Olympics. I don't get why every four years people pretend to care about sports they don't care about the rest of the time. It makes no sense.

I think you have it backwards. Having it only once every four years allows me to care enough to watch events like track & field.

As for the pygmies, a clever relative of mine had an idea -- if they have weight classes for wrestling on the (apt) assumption that weight is an overwhelming advantage, why don't they separate basketball or track into height classes?

Go Sun Devils?

As an Oregon State guy, I get a chuckle whenever the ASU flag team runs down the other side of the field and I start chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A!"

Nope. It's like that so you can read it when you're looking in your rear-view mirrors.

How else do you explain the particular racial dominance in professional sports and, as they mentioned, the exclusive dominance in the 100m event?

Funny how 104 years changes the narrative from "look at how superior the white man is over these savages" to "the white man stands no chance against the physically superior black man".
