Well, the article is about "unusual" high school mascots, not all "goofy". Because, #1, having an real F-16 in front of your school as a mascot, that is pretty kick ass.

#7, #5, #1 are all within a 45 minute drive of each other.

Also from that part of the state, the North Daviess school was incorporated from Plainville Midgets, Epsom Salts, and loads of other small town school clumpings.

Your move, Subby.

Why don't parochial schools have religious mascots? I'd love to see the Mater Dei "Flaming Monks" or the Sacred Heart "Festering Stigmatas."

Well in Oak Park IL there's the Fenwick Friars. And at the college level there's the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

My HS mascot was the Rickards Redskin. In the 90's they got all PC and changed it to the Raiders. But they also changed the school colors from Blue and Yellow to Silver and Black. Why did they have to change the colors too? I'd understand if it were a winning football team they were trying to emulate but...??? Now no alumni from the 'Redskin" era have any connection to the school.

Oh for f*ck's sake. If a stupid set of colors and a mascot is your only connection to their school, it was a sh*tty school and they are better off forgetting about it.

Hah, I went to Rickards too, IB class of '03. My freshman year was 1999, the year before the name was changed, so my class was called the "Last of the Redskins".

The colors were blue and gold when I was there, but I think they're still the same.

They changed the name because the son of an influential Native American was going to come to the school for the IB program, but they started a campaign to get the name changed. It was probably necessary, I was okay with it.

My wife was an Arabian Knight (from TFA). The town is pronounced "A-rabb" rather than the more common "AIR-ebb," and came about because the town's founder, Arad Thompson, went to Montgomery to charter the town, the clerk simply made a typo in the paperwork. It was never corrected.

My high school's mascot was the Jeff, picture above. It's literally a guy named Jeff. It gets better: the girls sports teams were the Lady Jeffs.

The legend is that the school had no name back in the day, so a sportswriter started calling us the Jeffs because my hometown is located in Jefferson County. My school then ripped off Jeff from the famous cartoon Mutt and Jeff (pictured below). So we were...the Jeffs.

media.comicvine.com

It's kinda cool having such a unique mascot (better than being a Knight, Blue Jay, Cardinal or Warrior like 99% of all schools), but I've gotten my fair share of crap for it over the years, which is okay. There are worse mascots out there.

Off of the top of my head, here in Texas we have the Austin High Maroons (I always hear Bugs Bunny saying "Whatta Maroon!") and the Javelinas (don't remember where they are from)...

My high school mascot was the Trojans - You can guess where the testosterone laced 16 year-old boy's humor took that one...

I do stand corrected. The colors are still blue and yellow. I wonder what made me think they'd changed?

On another note; try finding a good pic of Sammy Seminole from FSU. I did a GIS and they are few and far between.

I don't know how they got the name...either they said "we're one better than a regular tornado...cause we're a gold tornado" (read in a mental case deep southern style West Virginia type accent) or if a Golden Tornado is some kind of sick water sport!!

How in the flying fark is "Whippet" an unusual mascot?

Bulldog and Husky are common dog breeds as mascots, but Bloodhounds, Greyhounds, Salukis, Boxers, Great Danes, Hoyas, Ridgebacks, and Terriers are all also college mascots.

I'm from Illinois, so Alabama seems pretty tame. Our strange mascots:
Appleknockers, Cornjerkers, Pretzels, Bunnies, Marcos (from Polo HS), Midgets, Flaming Hearts, Orphans, Wooden Shoes, Zee-Bees (from Zion-Benton), Sobos (from South Beloit)...

My alma mater (in Birmingham) was Banks High School and our mascot was a jet. An actual jet:

i.imgur.com

It was a F-86 jet retired from the Air Force and was donated to the school in 1959 when it opened. It was mounted over the center of the two main wings of the school and painted with the school colors, sky blue and scarlet. The high school was later repurposed as a middle school and then eventually closed. After sitting in disrepair for a long time (as shown in the photo above) a group of alumni arranged to have the jet taken down a few years ago and donated to the Southern Museum of Flight at the Birmingham airport. It's been restored to its original paint job and now is on exhibit there.
