coolio mack: I can definitely recommend that Negro League museum. I spent a couple hours walking it a few years back. Really a great experience.

Seconded. Definitely worth it. It's connected with the Jazz Museum, which I wish I had time for but I hear is also excellent.

I also took a private tour of Kauffman Stadium, happened to be the only one on the tour, just me and this teenage usherette. Got to go on the field (well, the grass), in the dugout, visitor's clubhouse/locker room, press box, media room, a couple other places. I think most stadiums offer this. Lots of fun, pretty ballpark.

You know, I despise Tim McCarver since he never shuts up about how great baseball used to be and he continually tries to talk about how awesome Bob Gibson was...but I just can't hate Joe Buck. Sure, everybody finds him annoying and he is such a walking cliche that it has to hurt...

But, my former boss tells a story of seeing Joe Buck outside a hotel bar after a world series game. A bunch of the clubbies were sitting around and Joe Buck walks by, my former boss yells out "hey, Buck, you suck".

Joe Buck, without breaking stride, turns his head and yells "Hey, f*ck you" and keeps on walking out the hotel.

Apply directly to forehead in the event of a Joe Buck article:

Joe Buck Pissed In My Shoes
a short narrative by (Farker) NakedReporta

Back when I was 11 and living in St. Louis, my parents decided I was too smart to be wasting my time in public schools and started seeking out private schools. The choice was eventually narrowed to two: John Burroughs and Country Day. I took the admittance test for each, but a kid I really hated from the public school I had attended was also trying to get into Burroughs, so I tanked that test.

Come fall, I was a seventh-grader at St. Louis Country Day School (known as CODASCO for short), whose famous alums include Vincent Price and John Danforth. And so began a year of sheer living hell. Most of the kids at CODASCO came from monied families, while I was this socially inept middle-class kid who wore the same Sears-bought suit every day. I was an immediate target.

One of my classmates was Joe Buck, the son of legendary Cardinals announcer Jack Buck. Joe was kind of a big, fat kid, but he had all the airs of social entitlement. Typical of the kind of stupid crap Buck would pull on me was to ask me if I "knew" my mother or to mock my attire. On more than one occasion, he was one of the ringleaders as five or six kids would decide to simultaneously throttle me.

But the final indignity came on a spring afternoon when we had gym class. We all changed into our standard-issue t-shirts and shorts and trotted out to the baseball field. All, that is, except Joe Buck, who bolted out of the locker room about a minute behind the rest. And when gym period was over, and we returned to the locker room, there were my Docksides-knockoff loafers, filled with the acrid stench of urine. Buck denied it, and the gym teacher didn't really give a shiat.

I had to wear my gym sneakers the rest of the day, then tearfully explain to my parents about what had happened. They decided to press the issue, and it culminated in Joe and his mom and my mother and I all meeting with the headmaster. Joe denied it, I couldn't prove it, and the headmaster made us shake hands. I knew the remaining months were only going to be worse. The group beatings and mockery intensified. I barely passed my way through the seventh grade, and the next year I was back in public school. The torment continued -- hey, I was a real dork -- but at least it was free.

Look, kids can do cruel things. Joe was looking to be one of the guys, and I was an easy mark. He couldn't have any idea that my home life was simultaneously crumbling, and that what could have been a respite (time in school, away from home) was instead just compounding my nightmare. I suppose I should forgive the guy. But I can't.

I've managed to slog through a pretty respectable career as a writer. Joe, with his family ties and -- even I have to admit -- considerable talent, is the voice of FOX Sports. And every time I watch a marquee sporting event on FOX, I can't help but pause and reflect that, all those many years ago, that prick pissed in my shoes.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Earguy: Question: If you're the manager of the all-star game, and your starting pitcher starts to throw a perfect game, do you keep him in, even if it means other guys don't get in?

No. It's an exhibition of players. Not one player.

Depends, are you also the manager of a team with a legitimate chance in the post season? Cause if you are, screw the other players, you want home field advantage for the World Series.

I'm still waiting for George Brett to do something George Brett would do during the game. I see him being ultra blowhard-y during the game, saying "I'll show these young jackasses how homers are done", smashing one across Interstate 70 through the CrownVision screen, that ball killing a fuel truck driver, a massive explosion coming off the highway, then Brett urinating on the umpire when he says it doesn't count for the AL team because he wasn't in the hitting lineup.

Well I dont see the score changing much, its the all star game after all and most of the players just dont care since so few of them have a shot at the post season.

That being said, home field doesnt mean much I think its pretty close to .500 since they started making the all star game mean who gets home field, if I remember correctly I heard that the home team has won the WS 6 times and the away team has won 4 times.

If they've trapped the line, that won't work. TV channels can be blocked at the tap. However, you can use an HDTV antenna to pick up your local stations.

I honestly don't have a farking clue. It's Comcast, so there's a good chance they decided to be a-holes with the line, but they were the only option with actual capability. Probably would need the antenna.

I did:

There have been 84 World Series played since 1924 using the 2-3-2 format in which the team with home-field advantage hosts the first two and last two games, and the home team has won 48 times, or 57%.

This is now 58%, which is substantial. I'm too lazy to delve further into the numbers but it definitely means something. The All Star Game is sure a screwy way to decide it, though. And I doubt many (or even any) players are really concerned with it right now. But come October it is a factor.

58% is not a lot, it means that you have barely an advantage while in other sports it means a lot more, just read the articles I posted earlier even the sports writers talk about how it means nothing in baseball.

No, I won't. I really don't understand why you seem to be itching for an argument over something so stupid. You are correct that a 58% winning percentage over a sample size of 85 means absolutely nothing. Maybe you should drive: No, I won't. I really don't understand why you seem to be itching for an argument over something so stupid. You are correct that a 58% winning percentage over a sample size of 85 means absolutely nothing. Im not arguing I am just stating that HFA means nothing in baseball, in other sports the home team has a far greater shot at winning than the visitor, most sports are over .600 but baseball hovers around .500

The point was making this game count for anything is stupid since in the end it makes no difference.

Yes, because a team with a $30 million budget looking to extend itself beyond its level of comfort in order to take a chance on obtaining one or two good players is EXACTLY like a team with a $200 million budget signing 10-time All-Stars to sit on the bench and pinch-hit, just because they can.

But even I'm impressed that he's essentially arguing that there's no difference between the 2012 Nationals (.590 team after 83 games) and the 2012 Phillies (.427 team after 87 games).

The inside of steamingpile's skull cavity: Both teams are "near" 50%! It's no big edge. The Phillies are equally likely to make the playoffs. I got this. I bet I can get a good deal on Mariners ALDS tickets this year. They're "near" 50%. Ha, ha. All those rubes probably think the Rangers have some kind of edge.

then why wasnt Braun MVP?

I know i'm being a biatcheeky. but the fact is a 5 spot being put up on Verlander is a pretty big deal, chased one of the best pitchers in baseball after one inning. a 2 run first isnt enough to demoralize a team, but putting up 5 in the first plus 3 more in the 4th sure is.

that big first inning also forced Wash to use Harrison at least one if not two innings sooner than he would have.

um, because it did affect strategy? verlander was supposed to go two innings. regardless of whether its the ASG or a regular game, its still a baseball game wherein strategy is involved.

Yes, idiots care.

I'm fairly sure either Nathan or Price could've gone more than the 8 and 7 pitches they threw if it were so critical to have Harrison pitch the 5th instead of the 4th. The only "strategy" it affected is that they had to put in a different elite pitcher an inning earlier. OMG

Braun wasn't MVP because there was no way he was going to get it after the testing shenanigans during the offseason.

Braun - 1 double, 1 triple, 1 RBI, and made a great catch
Carbrera - 1 single, 1 HR, and 2 RBI

Giving the MVP to either of them was fine, but Braun never had a shot. What will be interesting is if he has a monster year and whether or not he even sniffs a first-place vote for MVP. He will have to get his average up 20+ points though to compete with Votto.

Actually, promoting a 19-year-old to MLB is unusual, but seeing that teenager show enough patience to draw a walk in 10% of his plate appearances is even more unusual.

Put most 19-year-olds on a stage like the All-Star Game, and they go all hackmaster on you. Knowing the strike zone well (against top-tier pitching no less) as a (young) rookie is impressive.

Put most 19-year-olds on a stage like the All-Star game and they probably keep the bat on their shoulder because the pitches are going fast enough that they really don't want to get near it.

If you're going to be a professional baseball player, it should be expected that you know where the strike zone is. Also, it seemed like the ump was being really strict about his strike zone.

Basically, it's like when announcers marvel at guys remembering to get both toes in on a football catch or being able to shoot FTs as a rookie. Motherf*ckers, it's not like they just started playing the sport. It's their first time in the league - they know how to play the sport and have usually been playing pretty much their entire lives. Basic sh*t like that should be expected. Rookies aren't supposed to be completely f*cking retarded.

Minor league pitchers often throw just as hard. The major leap from AAA to MLB is the amount of movement, and the precision of the location. Green rookies don't get overwhelmed by velocity. they get overwhelmed because they've never seen a baseball do that.

Young hitters rarely keep the bat on their shoulder. They tend to swing at anything they can physically reach until they develop a mature eye. Harper has been an exception.

I'm saying 19-year-olds as in the real version of 19-year-olds. Most of them couldn't be bothered to go stand in the batter's box, though.

I'm sorry I expect people to be good at their craft, especially since the only difficult part of baseball is hitting/pitching, and most people only have to do one.

nope, nothing difficult about turning a double play at all. or fielding a one-hopper screaming off the bat down the third base line. or accurately judging a line drive into the outfield. or knowing a pitcher's move such that you can steal a base. or picking off a player stealing. etc etc ad infinitum.

Oh, so you mean a completely retarded situation that no one is talking about, where some random fat kid off the street is selected to play in the All-Star Game because of a wacky mix-up and its ensuing hilarity.

In the meantime, here's a list of all players under 20 who qualified for the batting title (as Harper will, barring injury). They were all top-notch prospects-- you don't become a regular in MLB at age 19 unless you are.

Teenagers who could work a walk as well as Harper: Mel Ott, Rusty Staub.
Teenagers who could get on base as often as Harper: Mel Ott, Ty Cobb.
Teenagers who could outslug Harper: Mel Ott.
Teenagers with more SB per game than Harper: Ty Cobb.

2012-07-11 03:54:40 PM
Most 19-year-olds who play baseball and have played for their entire lives should understand the value of working a count and getting a walk. I understood this by age 10. Granted, I pretty much had to do this because I sucked at hitting, but it's not like it's some difficult concept. You can stop blowing everyone because they do what they're supposed to do.

I can also do without McCarver telling me it's interesting that someone who has 460 HRs in his career would get a bloop single. No, that's not interesting. People who hit HRs hit a lot of singles, too, over a couple of decades. FFS, there is nothing interesting about a bloop f*cking single. Stop pretending everything is interesting or there's a cool story.

Especially when you're going to have Buck hype that Kemp is wearing a mic through several pitches because your production is f*cking up, then show me several seconds of stupid-ass commentary of "everything he makes contact with is a hit" or "you can hit, you can hit."

Really? Then why can most MLB rookies not do this well? Why are there only two teenagers in history who have demonstrated this level of pitch recognition at the MLB level? Why do guys routinely fail out of the minors because they don't have pitch recognition skills? Because they don't have the worldly wisdom of a 10-year-old IAmRight?

Or just maybe, it's because your story about being 10 years old has zero to do with distinguishing balls from strikes at the MLB level, where you have a couple hundred milliseconds to make a decision about a ball that's going to break about a foot, and end up either 2 inches in the strike zone, or 2 inches out.

Especially since you were probably in a league where hitting the tee with your helmet was considered worthy of a special trophy.

There is a difference between knowing what to do and being able to do it. I might be able to hold off on pitches outside of the zone, but since I wouldn't do any damage to any pitch in the zone, pitchers would be fine with throwing pitches in the zone.

Also, as for historically, that probably has more to do with the increased emphasis on OBP and OPS in baseball now than it does with him just being that much better than everyone else ever. If you're being paid based on average or hits, then you swing more. If you're being paid based on OBP or OPS, then you worry more about the count.

And you'll note that I restricted my list above to teenagers who were MLB regulars. As in, people who didn't stand there like a moron and do nothing. Actual professional baseball players who can and did do damage to pitches in the zone.

And with two exceptions since 1901, Harper works the count better than any of them. It's a valuable, rare skill, one worth a lot of money down the road if he stays healthy. He deserves credit for developing it.

You wouldn't "hold off on pitches outside of the zone", because your trembling hands would be occupied trying to keep the anxiety-poop-spasms from running down your leg.

Partially because the skill has increased in value - if it had been valued as it is now years ago, then there might be more.

And I'm not sure how that list showed me anything except that not very many 19-year-olds make the majors in a significant way. Certainly nothing about how great he is at working a count (or why it's wrong to assume that people coming up now work counts more because OBP and OPS are now what GMs look at more than just average and HR).

I think you are overstating your argument. I will admit that mastering fielding a ball is essential to participation at any level after the age of 15, but, like many things, there are easy plays and near miraculous plays. It does look pretty easy, but that is only because professional players are very, very good at it.

2012-07-11 05:30:28 PM

red5ish: near miraculous plays.

The biggest difference in defensive skill is speed, honestly - the actual plays are relatively easy, but the best are able to get to way more of the miracle plays. Well, or you can be slow like Jeter or have bad reactions like Edmonds and make miracle plays out of what should have been regular plays.

The main problem is with people like the announcers treating everything as though it's a miracle play. Catching a ball about to hit the ground while forward sliding is pretty easy in baseball. I've done it many times. Racing and catching a ball on the run is pretty easy. Guys do it in football with a bigger ball, no glove, a helmet that limits their vision, and a guy hitting them as they catch it.

If McCarver and Buck weren't actively acting like every play was amazing (like apparently the HR derby people were gushing about people hitting HRs in the HR derby), it wouldn't be so bad to watch.

/I've also gotten to the point where I've realized that 90% of games seems to be "will the umpire call the borderline pitch a strike or a ball?"

This is one of those indications that Harper is exceptional. And he's not a fringe player-- he's more valuable than the average MLB regular.

IAmRight: Certainly nothing about how great he is at working a count

Except for the fact that he's been more frequently successful at doing so, I guess.

IAmRight: No, it's just that fielding is really, really easy when compared to actions performed in any other sport.

And yet, many MLB players lose out on millions of dollars because they can't do it. If fielding was "really, really easy", teams would put their 9 best hitters out there all the time. Guys like Brendan Ryan, Sean Rodriguez, Franklin Gutierrez, Jason Bartlett, etc. wouldn't have MLB jobs.

You seem to be immune to facts.
