Whether or not the new ruling party of Egypt is serious about this, it's just another way of diverting attention from the real problems of the country.

"The mosque was built around 1400 and is part of the city's storied history as one of the centers of Islam in Africa during the 15th and 16th centuries,"

So...according to the article they destroyed what was one of their own historical sites? WTF?

Islam bans statues and pictures of humans of animals on the basis that they are grounds for idolatry (hence all the fancy Arabic calligraphy). Wahhabism, the strain of Islam that is the official religion of Saudi Arabia and that gave rise to Al-Qaida, goes further and opposes relics, historical sites and buildings that might be "idolatrous" by turning people's attention away from God to a physical object.

This is true even for Muslim historical sites. While the Saudis are busy building up the hotel and retail facilities around Mecca and Medina, they are destroying some important sites associated with Muhammad and his family.

The pyramids are large and famous, but otherwise destroying them would be in line with recent practices. I didn't think the Muslim Brotherhood was that radical, but if they are, it might come down to the military stepping in.

I am kind of looking forward to the day when the more batshiat fundamentalist Muslims notice that big black building they're all bowing down before and make the obvious connection.

How the fark do they get from one crazy person demanding the government do something crazy to insinuating that the government is actually listening to this one crazy person and implementing the plans?

That would be like an Egyptian newspaper asking "After bringing down the World Trade Center, does the US government have plans to bring down any other buildings?"

The Salafi party which wants to destroy the pyramids is not the Muslim Brotherhood, which won the elections, but a separate, much more extremist party called al-Nour. The pyramids are safe.

Dumbass article:

Al-Mahmoud's comments relate to Amr bin al-As, a companion of the Islam's founder Muhammad, who invaded Egypt in 641 and began destroying Egyptian artifacts. While an historical debate exists over the accuracy of such reports, some early Muslim writers have noted that Amr bin al-As even destroyed the great Library of Alexandria, which was a hub of knowledge for the ancient world.

The library was already destroyed before Islam even existed. It was destroyed by those professing the Christian faith who burned the scrolls and killed many of those who studied there, most notably Hypatia. Maybe some dumbass ancient Islamic writer wanted to give his religion the "glory" of destroying the library or maybe someone was writing a century afterwards and just assumed.

----

One might also point out that the Salafi party (actually called the Al-Nour Party) is not in power. And as others pointed out, way to many would oppose the plan for it to be taken seriously. And frankly, why would anyone wanting to destroy it put a bunch of wax on the pyramids? If one could put enough wax on the pyramids to disfigure it (which would have to be many tons) then one could simply demolish them.

By bankrolling the Saudi royal family and the Wahhabi movement they support, the US has done more to destroy Islam than the Crusaders ever hoped for.

Weaver95: seriously - how would you even go about TRYING to destroy those things? we're talking about a couple of piles of VERY large rocks. And that's just the pyramids themselves. that's not including what's in the valley of kings or the Sphinx, which is another great huge pile of stone.

Maybe it is.

If they want to be regressive medieval farkwits and drive their country back to the bronze age who cares? Once the pyramids are gone the tourist dollars will stop flowing, and the shiathole will dry up and blow away.

I mean sure, I would like to see the pyramids some day, but that's not their problem.

And maybe, just maybe, it will serve as a lesson to other fundamentalist idiots around the world (including here) about the dangers of being a regressive asshat.

Weaver95: i'm not sure they CAN destroy those things. they're fricking huge.

A couple of backhoes, bucket loaders, and some manual labor and they could flatten them pretty quickly I bet. (maybe some explosives for the largest blocks)

If they were smart (which clearly they are not) they would put the block on eBay. People would pay for the debris.

2012-07-11 08:24:25 AM
