Romney's personal finances have become a target of the Obama campaign. Romney told Radio Iowa his investments are managed by a blind trust.

"I don't manage them. I don't even know where they are. That trustee follows all U.S. laws. All the taxes are paid, as appropriate. All of them have been reported to the government. There's nothing hidden there. If, for instance, you own shares in Renault or Fiat, you still have to disclose that in the United States," Romney said. "So, you know, I understand the president's going to try to do anything he can to divert attention from the fact that his jobs record is weak and he has no plan to make things better."

I have a credit union and a few accounts, there. I can't imagine being so wealthy that I pay someone else to handle all my monies in accounts I don't know the location of. I'm not jealous, just ... awed, I guess.

But methinks he's hiding something.

But, hey, when he's not busy squirreling away his money in secret foreign places, he's totally caring about the plight of middle- and working-class people, and how he can help them.

2012-07-10 08:51:58 PM
Yes, because your average working-class family in the United States has shares in Renault or Fiat. That's something they can totally relate to, Mitt. Good job.

2012-07-10 08:52:48 PM
I'm also of the opinion that if he thinks America is 'all that', then he should gladly be willing to keep all of his investments in the country. You know, to help the economy. He is a 'job creator', right? Well, use that money and create jobs, Mitt!

I agree. The best the left has is that they figured out that Romney is rich. Not as rich or Kerry or Perot or Kennedy, or FDR, but rich.
(they also figured out that Christie is fat)

0bama in the meantime just keeps showing his incompetence. Even with the teleprompter he still says corpse man.

Really? They also figured out that Romneycare = Obamacare, so go right ahead and shiat on Obamacare - that's an excellent strategy "conservatives"

"No job creator wants to keep their money over here right now! Do you have any idea how much you have to pay in taxes? Sheesh, it's like 15% or something! I have to pay a guy like $70,000 every year just to figure out how to make sure I get all the tax breaks I deserve! This is ridiculous! Just drop taxes for all the job creators altogether, and then they'll create jobs! This isn't rocket science!"

All of them have been reported to the government. There's nothing hidden there. If, for instance, you own shares in Renault or Fiat, you still have to disclose that in the United States."

Politicians should and in many cases must use blind trusts to avoid conflicts of interests or even appearances of such. Can't fault Romneybot for that. However, its not really a blind trust if everything is openly disclosed to the Federal Government, because then you are in a positions to take advantage of that information since its available. Again, Mittens wants it both ways--he says his blind trust has transparency. That's self-contradictory.

Demetrius: Perhaps if you can't manage your own money, you shouldn't be allowed to handle the government's money.

People who manage both their own money and other people's money and have the power to make policy will make policy so that other people's money makes their own money grow much larger, regardless of whether that is good policy for the whole society. That is why blind trusts are a good thing for those who exercise legal power over fiscal policy.

Yes, when it comes to things like that, the idea is that I don't know what's going on. So how does that work? I don't know, I'm not supposed to know. I just leave those sorts of things to the people who are supposed to take care of them. Oh yes, and Mr. Cheese, the Silver Level at $5000 comes with an autographed photo!"

Renault or Fiat?! Boy, Romney should thank his lucky stars he's Republican, because if he were a Democrat, it would be all about his un-Americanness.

2012-07-10 10:15:49 PM
FTFA: The assets in Romney's financial disclosures are kept either in blind trusts, with lawyer Bradford Malt serving as a trustee, or retirement accounts, according to a recent Vanity Fair article. The trusts, however, have some investments in firms with ties to the Romneys. The article also investigated Romney's now closed Swiss Bank account and as much as $30 million held in the Cayman Islands, from which the Romney campaign says he derives no tax advantage.

Yeah, any blind trust with ties to the family companies suggests shenanigans since he he would be expected to take actions favorable to his own family companies and thus his "blind trust." And once you say the words "Cayman Islands," you're pretty well farked. They've tried to clean up their act, but everyone knows those words still mean "tax shelter."

"No, no, no, you see, because they're different. Your viewers are smart enough to see the difference, no matter how much the President tries to sell them on this! You see, Romneycare was a bill that called for personal responsibility and resulted in near-universal coverage for the entire state, with most of the costs born by free market principles! Obamacare is a Socialist takeover of our entire, best-in-the-world private healthcare system that will ration care to only those whom the government deems worthy of receiving it."
