sno man: Rodrigo Hernandez: I didn't think there were dwarf women.

Kinda needs to be, no? But they must have all been home making tiny sandwiches for their menfolk...

Dwarf women have beards too, if I remember correctly.

Jaws_Victim: Hate lord of the rings, this is really beautifully done. Very clear and pretty voice. I appreciate the lore of the books but hate them for their shiatty writing and characters. Feel the same about Game of Thrones. Why can't fantasy authors WRITE well instead of just imagining well?

OK, Tolkien could get a little tedious at times, but what's wrong with Game of Thrones? Maybe you could name an author whose style you prefer?

Not a bookmark for when I can enjoy this on my home speakers instead of my phone speaker.

I skipped the songs in the books because they looked terrible, and was happy that they didn't appear in the movies.

Then this girl comes along... I got work done while listening to her sing the whole thing through.

Well done!

scarmig: This also reminds me that I need to read The Hobbit to my kids before we go see the movie.

And yes, I will mangle the songs.

But I will mangle them in the best tradition of "goddamnit, these are important, and if that means meowling them out in quasi-emphatic tones, you'll farking listen and be happy about it!"

Started it for mine 2 weeks ago (Son is 7, Daughter is 5) and totally forgot about the songs until I hit the first one - Made up a tune on the spot (and by made up, I sure I mean stole something half remembered from the Chieftains or someone like that). Been copping melodies from various folk and filk for the rest of them.

Game of thrones has absolutely zero poetry to the writing. It functions as extremely basic writing with dialogue that only serves to move the plot forward. Part of the problem I have with the books is that Tyrion is seen as incredibly clever, but the way he talks and acts just seems that he's fairly normal around a group of scheming idiots. To put it in a different way, he's written the way a dullard would write a genius, or someone who lacks wittiness trying to write someone who is very witty. I can't quote any of the dialogue in the series as something that stands out like I can with Gone with the Wind or Charlotte's Web, or other classics. I love the series....as an adaptation to tv.

I generally have a problem with modern fantasy because it's over saturated. People take elves, dwarves, magic, and then shuffle them a bit to crank out a new novel. I want to see fantastical new worlds completely different and alien to our own world. That said, Fantasy authors whose work I have enjoyed include Rowling, Terry Goodkind, and Peter S. Beagle, who I think has the distinction of writing the most beautiful fantasy novel ever, The Last Unicorn.

When there exists a possibility of fark comments for getting published and sold for money, you'll probably see a drastic increase in quality. Until then, anything longer than a sentence will be met with a "Cool story bro Lolll" and "Welcome to Fark!" Hence, why they are comments and not articles.

also, welcome to fark.

As a teenager, I never would have imagined that this could have happened. Amazing! As I was reading the books I had no way to imagine how this would sound. Such a gift that I could hear this.

It's been long enough ago that my memory might be a little fuzzy, but I'm thinking it's Pratchett's Dwarfs you might be thinking of.

That doesn't mean ALL their books are pinnacles of the genre, but I enjoy actually reading them instead of the chore of a Tolkien or Martin novel.

Have any time stamps for examples? I admit I'm not remotely an audiophile. Honestly the only things that bugged me were the stuffed animals and the fact that there was a constant breeze in the room sending the candles in one direction. Otherwise, I thought it sounded very nice.

Mistborn was great.

2012-07-11 12:03:45 AM
Mistborn was very unique, as where his stand alones. The First New Stuff since Elizabeth Haydens Rhapsody, and far more novel. All his mechanics are new.

He (Sanderson) has a new book called Way of Kings, it feels like lord of the rings without pretense, like Thomas Covenent with more compelling characters.
