I normally hate the "morning zoo" douchebag crews, too, but I never miss an episode of "The Regular Guys" in Atlanta. It's difficult to describe, but I guess you could call it an intelligent, genuinely-funny version of the normal morning format. It rewards those who listen every day, as a lot of their jokes are long-running and reference shows from months or even years earlier. Tim Andrews, the show's producer, as well as a member of the show, is one of the best voice imitators I've ever heard (it seems like he has hundreds of celebrities down pat), as well as a tremendous improv comedian; he also makes a lot of cultural references that Farkers would love.

If you get a chance, get out their podcast - they put every one of their segments on iTunes every day. In particular, if you can find a version of "Regular Guys Squares" or "Answering Under the Influence," go for those. If you can get past Larry's constant assholishness/self-centeredness, it should quickly become one of your favorite podcasts.

I love these stories. Very rare I know something on Fark.

Friend of mine had the night shift. He decided to pre-record an hour so he could go smoke weed in the parking lot.
He left the mic on while he was pre-recording AND rolling his joint.
So as one song is playing, you can hear, "Ah, crap. Stems are poking through."

When I was in radio I was married to the chief engineer so it was ingrained in my brain to not have anything anywhere near the console.
Granted our console was old and crappy so it didn't really matter and would have been a blessing but I still didn't want to friggin hear it if something happened.

The first thing I was taught was to keep your beverage away from the board. The guy training me couldn't stress that enough. Difficulty: weeks before he started training me, he dumped a Coke on the board and they had to work out of the production studio for a few days.

I would kill to have that board. At the station I work for, I think we have had the same board since the 70's. Ours are on wooden blocks so spills go under quite nicely.

Radio is in an awful crisis. There's not a single jock who doesn't hate their life and constantly dreams about changing careers. The salaries are disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.
And the depressing thing is it'll never change, as there are a million dumb ass kids just burning to get in to start the cycle over again.

Find something that takes way less effort but pays way more. Radio will ask for countless unpaid over time, too much stress for the payscale, and your soul. And after that, it'll let the sales reps promise clients the moon while every other dept works to make it happen.

Gah, do I ever not regret leaving.
