(American Thinker)   A thoroughly flustered Obama, without his trusting teleprompter or a closet advocate moderating the debate, may be seen by Americans as clueless and blundering. If that happens, a close race could become overnight a landslide   (americanthinker.com) divider line 303

To be fair, it's going to be hard to debate a guy who's taken every possible position on any particular topic.

You know, while I don't completely discount the notion that Romney could be elected, I still tend to place whimsical fantasies like "landslide Romney victory" firmly in the same intellectual category as UFO conspiracy theorists, birthers, and Harold Camping's cult.

Not only does your blog suck, but it's title contains about 50% falsehoods by volume.

Has Obama ever really been flustered? I mean.. he's debated before. He's given speeches off the cuff before. He's answered questions before. For smeg's sake, he's been president for nearly four years, I think he's proven he can handle himself. This is like that ball-hurtingly stupid "vetting" thing Breitbart's site has been trying to do.

These tactics don't work on an incumbent!

Subby, that is pure headlile failure all around. And when Obama beats Rmoney to a pulp in every debate, it will obviously be due to a "closet advocate".

Stop violating their narrative!

Romney sputtered and got testy when challenged by Santorum and Gingrich. I think Obama will do fine.

Like or dislike Obama, aside from some uncomfortable "uhs" in speeches the dude is basically unflappable. I'd be terrified going into a debate with him, and would likely resort to frustration when my regular arsenal is shot down. Which, of course, is what a typical GOP candidate will do.

I'm sorry, righties, but you're farking with the wrong Democrat. He's not only a good orator, he's single-handedly taken your most jingoistic, pants-sh*tting platforms (Osama, terror in general) and co-opted them for himself. Seriously, this guy kills more people and deports more illegal immigrants by 9am than most of us do all day. And when it's over, he puts on a suit and calmly listens to you whine and screech and make an ass of yourself. Then he pulls the rope.

You best start believing in troll administrations. You're in one.

/not an Obama-bot - he's not liberal enough for me. But damn do I admire the guy.

Just out of curiosity, because I've never seen that before, where do they get those numbers?

Also...really? A landslide? I know some pretty hardcore Republicans who are pissed off this year because they hate both options. I'm trying to convince them to stay home ("yeah, I agree...I'm not even voting this year!!" hurr hurr hurr), and I know some of them probably will.

That's Nate Silvers model, it's an aggregation of polls weighted with economic data and a bunch of other stuff. It's about as good of a prediction as you are going to get without an honest-to-god crystal ball.

The NYTimes is working with Nate Silver (who got his start messing around with baseball stats) aggregates and weights a bunch of different polls. He's been pretty dead on accurate with his results in the past.

I can't wait for the dichotomy in post-debate analysis vis-a-vis the blogger-patriots and the actual media.

Where the media will accurately report that "after the moderator asked Romney to clearly explain how the Individual Mandate was now a tax when it wasn't in Massachusetts Romney shrieked 'How DARE you speak to your betters that way!! I'm personal friends with media moguls and I'll have you fired! I'LL HAVE ALL OF YOU FIRED!!' before running off into the wings" Fox will do a full analysis of Romney's "masterful control of the issues that had Obama on the run like, say, a Kenyan marathoner, perhaps?"

Thank you both.
Sounds interesting, I'll have to do more research into what numbers they use and how they come up with it. Sounds like its a conglomeration of stats to come up with a composite opinion. Wonder what the +/- is on it, and what (if any) biases there are. Either way it's neat.

The candidates have to agree to debate and agree on a debate schedule. Quite honestly, I expect Romney to agree to one debate. He won't go for no debates because he won't want the "he's afraid to debate!" But I wouldn't be surprised if he agreed to only one, trusting his money and scripted campaigning rather than risk unscripted debates.

bdub77: Obama is going to do some damage in the debates.

Of course... we may run into a "high expectations" problem. Everybody is pretty much anticipating total burn-to-the-ground-and-salt-the-earth destruction... if he ends up merely disemboweling every one of Romney's points and making him look like a fool it will be trumpeted as a Romney victory by mere survival.

The opposite is also true. Palin managed to avoid swallowing her tongue and everyone was giving her gold stars. Low expectations.

Even without a teleprompter, Obama is far superior on improv interviews than Romney. Unlike Romney, Obama actually knows what he wants, whereas Romney cant remember what he said yesterday because it was politically convenient.

Clarity and consistency make it easier. And that's what Romney lacks. Even if he were a more polished public speaker, he'd have a hard time keeping up with his own stories and lines.

They do remember that "Obama can't speak without a teleprompter" is a lie that the right started, don't they? I mean, if you're betting the horse on something that you were actively trying set as the narrative, that sets you up to look pretty stupid when it's not true.

Everybody already knows it's not true. They'll just switch to the "Obama is a golden-tongued empty suit" narrative for a news cycle or two, then whip out "Can't speak without a teleprompter" as soon as there's one visible in the next campaign stop.
