Naah - probably only 8 billion by 2032. Maybe. We'll probably never hit 9 billion - growth rates are slowing pretty much everywhere.

Of course, the people who have been claiming the world was going to collapse from overpopulation used to tell us it was going to go to hell when population reached 5 billion. Then 6. Then 7.

When I was a kid, I was told that hundreds of millions of people would starve to death in the 1970s, and that world society would collapse not long after. Didn't happen, so they changed the prediction in later editions (Ehrlich's The Population Bomb is a good example).

The problem with that school of doomsaying is that they use exponential growth formulas for population, and arithmetic growth numbers for almost everything else...

No, the per female rate is decreasing slightly (2.3-2.2-2.0). The actual net of 212,000 per day is steadily increasing, due to the fact that we have an ever increasing # of fertile females. We are past the edge of perpectuality and we will only level off after the 9B mark due to the per death rate catching up, some time around 2040 to 2050.
