At first I was all uhhhuh, sure. Then I agreed with Subby about 2 minutes in. Pretty epic.

2012-07-09 10:15:08 PM
Wow. Ummmm... That is just incredibly impressive.

True story, bro:

I used to work at an old-line Creole restaurant in New Orleans, where the average employee age was 70. A long-time Maitre'D told me about his run-in with Steve McQueen:

He shows up with (of course) an impossibly hot date. Though he has a sport coat and tie, he was wearing jeans. The guy telling me the story informs McQueen that jeans aren't allowed. McQueen didn't cause a fuss like some celebrities might. Instead, he disappeared for a moment.

When he returned, he was in his underwear, holding the offending jeans in his hand. "Here ya go, I'm not wearing jeans. Can I eat now?"

He was shown a table. And even though he was allowed to put his pants back on, apparently every woman in the place slipped off their chairs. According to the story he tipped like Robert Deniro in Goodfella's.

/this same restaurant had a strict first-come-first-serve policy, and Ronald Reagan was irritated that he had to wait in line with his security detail.

At first I thought this sucks - what's with all the stupid DG sponsorships? Honestly, I don't even know what that is. Then I thought this might not be so bad,. And then I thought wow, this guy can really drive.

Impressive. the video was both very annoying and very cool at the same time. Nice song choice to end it with.

I wonder if they'd let me even try to drive around their town like that - probably not.

I couldn't stand the constant cuts and fake static. Does that go away after 2 minutes?

2012-07-10 05:15:31 AM
Needs more pink flickering lines.

2012-07-10 05:18:56 AM
So if that black knob is the shifter, then that big silver looking thing locks up his front wheels?

Wow the new Project Gotham graphics look great.

ceebeecates4: then that big silver looking thing locks up his front wheels?

It's basically a parking brake, a very beefed up parking brake.

2012-07-10 06:59:41 AM
Do anything close to that with a fresh-off-the-lot car in everyday traffic and then I'll be impressed.

Hell, just going two blocks without encountering a cell junkie will impress the methane out of me.

My favorite part was where they made everyone in the city go away. That was cool.

/No doubt. Very cool vid, and the guy has mad skills, no argument there, but it must have sucked for the shop owners. Hey, do you mind if i cost you a day's business so i can tard my way down your street in circles?

FTFY.

For all the noise it was remarkably boring. Anybody else?

2012-07-10 07:57:13 AM
Couldn't even go down Lombard Street

2012-07-10 08:00:19 AM
Great driving, but that editing makes me want to cockpunch someone.

Too annoying to watch.

2012-07-10 08:02:39 AM
It was good, but the six different angles of every move just weren't enough. It needed at least a dozen repeats of every single maneuver to really grab my attention and not get incredibly boring.

Happy Hours: At first I thought this sucks - what's with all the stupid DG sponsorships? Honestly, I don't even know what that is.

It's DC Shoes, a company co-founded by Ken Block. Makes sense that it's his main sponsor.

2012-07-10 08:28:33 AM
nice to see Ken is doing something since he isn't WRC material.

2012-07-10 08:33:48 AM
One thing's for certain; corporate sponsorship keeps the cops away from donuts.

mrlewish: For all the noise it was remarkably boring. Anybody else?

Bullit did it better with a better sounding and better looking car.

2012-07-10 08:35:30 AM
Soooo how many times did they try some of those shots (look at the tire tracks).

2012-07-10 08:46:11 AM
Subby totally stole that headline from Jalopnik.

2012-07-10 08:48:26 AM
Well, that was remarkably underwhelming. The jump cuts were particularly annoying.

2012-07-10 08:51:12 AM
The air-drift at about 6 minutes is unreal.

I've always been impressed with these videos, but that was the moment when I decided that Ken Block might actually be a wizard.

AverageAmericanGuy: I couldn't stand the constant cuts and fake static. Does that go away after 2 minutes?

The fake static stops about 1:20. Hint: Well-made videos of action events have constant cuts.

Wow, SF looks like a nice city to live in. There's absolutely no traffic anywhere, and the streets and sidewalks are completely empty!

Seriously though, where the fark are all the people? I've never seen a city that empty before.

You are so clueless and it is obvious that you don't follow the sport at all. Could you even name the last American to records points on the WRC?

/haters gonna hate

That video makes me want to play some DiRT 3.

dsriggs: Couldn't even go down Lombard Street

Vermont St. is more crooked (with a sinuosity of 1.56 versus 1.2 for Lombard Street), and it looked to me as if he went up Vermont.

/Not interested enough to go back and confirm.

They were removed for filming or kept the area really well closed off. He drove through the heavy tourist spots where normally there would be quite a mob of people at just about any time of day.

No Tenderloin?

to record points - sure i'll play along... before Ken there was...

John Buffum, the most successful US rally driver and the only US driver to ever win a European championship.

if the US used FIA rules it there would be more drivers able to make the jump.

The trailer says PLEASE_HOON_RESPONSIBLY which is a new word for me.
From Wikipedia: hoon

Hoon is a derogatory term used in Australia and New Zealand, to refer to a anyone who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviours. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives a car or boat in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, that is, fast, noisily or dangerously. In New Zealand, the term "boy racer" is also widely used.
...
Hoon activities can include speeding, burnouts, doughnuts or screeching tires.
...
The term "hoon" has obtained a semi-official use in Australia, with police and Governments referring to legislation targeting anti-social driving activity as "anti-hoon laws".
So I guess "hoon" means to act like a dangerous showoff jackass however if you do it in a death-defying way and and get sponsors to film it then it is cool?

2012-07-10 02:06:52 PM
WRC isn't for everyone. What's your point? He still has a ton of talent among all the other events he participates in.

2012-07-10 02:30:25 PM
For some reason, I now want to go drink a Monster in San Francisco.

Not quite sure why.

Did they really close down an entire city so that hooligan could destroy 4 tires and a turbo?

This. I sat through the whole thing waiting for Lombard Street.

Ha, 4, good one.

Turn up the volume to enjoy the next 9 minutes of tire shredding, white knuckling, butt puckering, clutch melting video goodness.

That was friggin great!

2012-07-10 03:29:43 PM
Wow, amazing what they were able to do in 9 minutes.

/felt like a 2 hour documentary

2012-07-10 03:44:17 PM
Ok... after seeing ken block try to actually drive in WRC, nothing he does impresses me.. the shiat in these videos would make any drift guy shrug..

BTW... for anyone that doesn't follow WRC, its real rally racing.. not the stuff ken does in america.. and ken cannot hang with the men. he normally drops 1-2 minutes per stage, if he even finishes a stage without crashing..

Here he is unable to turn a corner in practice..

P.S. i have nothing against ken.. i just dont see the thrill of doing donuts over and over around stuff..
Ken in WRC... plenty more crashes if you search..

2012-07-10 03:52:47 PM
Alright, pretty neat. But one thing I don't understand about shiat like this: Why do they even call his car a Ford Fiesta? It may have started out that way, but the thing is hardly what you get if you go to the dealership and ask for a FORD FIESTA today. They do that shiat for NASCAR too... some car doing 210 mph down the track and "Oh look it's a Camry!" Right.

2012-07-10 04:13:36 PM
Title of the video: "DC SHOES: KEN BLOCK'S GYMKHANA FIVE:"

What... what do those string of generic english words mean? I see they have used letters to form random words, but it's incomprehensible.

2012-07-10 04:25:18 PM
I knew I was in store for something cool, hip and edgy because they were doing all those static cuts between shots.

2012-07-10 04:32:53 PM
This is still my favorite drifting video (Totally NSFW)
