I know, same with all those other people. And everybody else who surely thought that The Oatmeal won the internet as evidenced by the comments on TFB. Surely they all owe me SOMETHING, right?

Oh, I also heard that one lunatic who sues pretty much everyone is trying to sue Oatmeal under a fake name. Can't dig up the news story again as I forgot the name, but I'm pretty sure the guy's been on Fark at some point.

some_beer_drinker: i dont know what that's all about but it's bold. i like money.

Short story:

Funnyjunk.com was stealing content from the Oatmeal.

The Oatmeal called them on it.

So funnyjunk threatened to sue the Oatmeal unless he paid them $20,000 in damages (their lawyer is the Charles Carreon referenced).

The Oatmeal responded by saying "I'm not paying you sh*t, but what I will do is ask my readers for $20,000 in donations to the American Cancer Society and the National Wildlife Federation."

He promised them a picture of the money in this post.

Readers actually raised $211,223.04.

Justice prevailed.

Oh, and Charles Carreron filed lawsuits against the Oatmeal, the American Cancer Society and the National Wildlife Federation because threatening well-loved charities is, like the best legal stra-tee-ger-eee every.

It's called "Operation BearLove Good. Cancer Bad." Inman named the National Wildlife Federation and the American Cancer Society as beneficiaries.

Okay, so a site I've never heard before, raised money for a charity that's not specified, withdrew it in cash and used it to spell things and take pictures to send to, and rub it in the face of, a rival? ....is that the gist?

That's all it takes to win the internet?

The American Cancer Society and National Wildlife Federation are charities that aren't specified?

He took a frivolous lawsuit threat and turned it into mad bank to fight cancer and help bears. Or the other way around. Either way.

I've been following this case for a Business Law class, and it's been as educational as it has been entertaining.

I'm shocked by the number of Farkers who aren't aware of what this is about.

It was easily 10% of my entertainment for the last couple of weeks.

As long as we're catching people up - don't forget to check Charles Carreon's wife's derptastic blog - the Nader Library.
Ooh ooh ooh - she has a new section dedicated solely to this http://rapeutation.com/introduction-to-the-subject
