Why are Americans afraid of paying taxes? Are they afraid of good education, infrastructure, police/fire/ems services?

Debeo Summa Credo: vernonFL: The so called "Bush tax cuts" were temporary by their definition. Its in the law that they expire.

Then let them all expire. We have a deficit and need to raise taxes. I like Obama but I'd like him more if he had the balls to say we all need to pitch in. His proposal only reduces the total cost of the tax cuts by like 30%, iirc.

Those making less than $250K are pitching in. They have born the brunt , not only of this recession, but of the imbalances in our economy for the last 30 years.

Well it's a start.

I don't mind rich people. They are necessary...and hey, some of them actually earned it. We need more rich people and less uber-rich people.
That's the problem. There are too few "well off" people. That upper-middle class turned over more money collectively than the uber-rich person of the same matched worth will ever do. We need more ways to take away from the folks who are hoarding up all the money.

And it is deserved, whether or not CNN and MSNBC are equally bad or less bad. I don't know why you think it is childish to call out a station that claims to be reporting the news for being inaccurate and dishonest. I admit to having skimmed the thread, but I don't think I saw anyone saying 'FOX news is terrible, but that there CNN oughta receive the award for outstanding achievement in the field of excellence'. People shouldn't be forced to find one example of all three major outlets (or more?) in order to criticize one.

Showing an example of fox news farking up and then saying "yup, fox news sucks" is, at the very least, better than creating the strawman that every foxnews hater is a CNN/MSNBC shill and then setting it on fire.

I was at the Rolex store the other day, thinking about how unfair it is that MY taxes are going to be raised, when almost half of all Americans don't even pay any federal income tax at all!

Just because I make over $250,000 per year, I have to pay more, I thought as I was waiting for my BMW 750 to be detailed. The guy polishing my cars tires doesn't have to pay more.

Life is so unfair. But that is Obama Socialism for you!

More recently, how about "Half of the GOP's entire platform'? Every one of their fiscal policies is designed to screw over people who do actual work and reward the wealthy for hoarding their wealth, or sending it (and jobs) overseas.

I think it's true that big business wants Obama gone just on general principle. But if you were pulling down record profits without hiring any more people, why would you hire more?

The right will be real quick to tell you that the purpose of a business is making money, not employing as many people as you can. The other side of that is that it makes it pretty hard to blame Obama for unemployment but you're not supposed to notice that.

cchris_39: smeegle: Gyrfalcon: Seriously. You'd have to explain taxing capital gains and dividends in a longer sentence, and $250K can be said in 10 seconds, just right for a news commercial.

Explain to me Gyrfalcon, how Capital Gains rate at about 15% (which is what most of the wealthy pay) is paying their "fair share" compared to the middle class tax bracket of 27%.
When people say the wealthy pay more taxes then then everyone else, isn't that a misnomer in terms of the ratio of income? I just don't get the argument spun from GOPers.

In order to pay capital gains tax you have to HAVE capital gains. That means putting your own money at risk of loss. If you do lose your investment, you only get to deduct $3,000 in capital losses.

So basically, the government shares in your wins but not your losses.

that $3,000 cap is how much you can use net capital losses to offset other income. There is no limit to how much capital losses you can deduct from cap gains

So, if our wealthy citizens choose to risk their capital, they are responsible for those choices and should not use the fact of that risk as an entitlement to a lower rate than the MC gets on actual earned income. There seems to be an imbalance.

terrible idea to raise taxes on the middle class at this point. Terrible idea to make the cutoff for deduction reductions and tax breaks at $250k as well. Nancy P has it right. Status quo up to a million. More brackets above that with higher brackets than under Clinton to make up the difference.

And reduce some/all of the imbalance between how unearned and earned income are taxed.

/it was good enough for Reagan

taxing cap gains and divs as ordinary income is an idea worth considering. Talking about millionaires and billionaires when placing the magical number at $250k is nonsense.

How is 250,000 any more a magical number then 1,000,000?

it isn't. $25,000 would be equally "magical"

So what's your problem then? Are those making a$250K so close to the edge that they cannot afford a very slight tax increase?

I had an argument with someone about these graphs that FOX does, which always seem to have a problem with placing the data points in the appropriate place along the y-axis. He told me it was obviously accidental. I challenged him to figure out, with any spreadsheet program, how you can do something like that without intention. He still hasn't been able to show me how to do that, without mislabeling, or simply placing individual text boxes with incorrect data near each point, or some other intentionally misleading way, but he still defends that these graphs are just mistakes.

It's goddamn sickening that so many of us will see something like that, know it's complete bullshiat, but defend it simply because it tells us of a reality that we wished we lived in.

Um, both headlines are accurate, given that the cuts have been around for over half a decade, and it's as easy to argue that CNN is spinning in favor of Obama in the way that it's presenting it as it is to argue that Fox is doing the same against him.

Also, my opinion on the Bush tax changes is the same now as with the first renewal a year or two ago: they were poorly thought out in the first place and a responsible government would let them _all_ expire. Neither "keep all the temporary rate changes" nor "keep only half (roughly, in total $) of the rate changes" is an acceptable compromise when the government doesn't have enough money to pay off its budget, much less it's debt. We're largely out of the recession now, so you don't even have that somewhat weak excuse.

//I'll take a slightly higher tax bill over the government collapsing economically like a third-world junta and starting to resort to bullshiat like currency devaluation.

Allowing tax cuts for the rich to expire ISN'T a "tax hike", it's a TAX RESTORATION!

We were told that when the rich get tax cuts, it would "trickle down" ( what a skeevy, degrading phrase that is, as if we were masses of cattle with heads tilted back & our mouths open, begging for a trickle of water to come from our Lords and Masters above).

Well, the rich didn't trickle anything. They either kept it or spent it overseas.

No, you are still incorrect. If you are going to try for the "technically correct" goal, try to actually be correct.

He signed into law an extension of a tax cut that has always been a temporary thing. Letting it expire is not a tax hike. Reverting to a previous state at the end of a planned temporary adjustment should not be viewed as a new action. It is ignorant or dishonest to consider it one.

Which are you?

Obama said it best in his speech:

If both sides want to extend the cuts for those under 250k, then they should go ahead and do that, and then argue about the cuts for those over 250k afterward.

Republicans have shown once again, as they have a hundred times in the past, that they are the biggest caterer to special interest groups of all: the 1%. And, as tired as that phrase is becoming, its not becoming any less true.
