TB greatly affects vulnerable populations (prisoners, the elderly, mentally ill) and as such is not given due attention by the authorities. With our cuts in safety nets for the elderly and mentally ill, and our ever-growing prison population (1 in 100 Americans are in jail), it's a problem that's likely to get worse before it gets better.

Every healthcare worker in the United States (down to the janitors and people who serve hospital food, the volunteers, etc) is required to get TB vaccines.

That's okay, these people had the CHOICE to be poor and die. This was their choice. They should have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and stopped having so many abortions and then maybe they would have the money to pay the pharmaceuticals in order to treat their TB. Yeah, clusters of TDR TB have popped up in India an Pakistan (? ). We've actually seen human transmission of TDR TB which is terrifying.

As far as I know, it's also been spotted in Italy, so it's not just relegated to the third-world/developing countries of the world.

According to Wired, it's been seen in India, Iran and Italy. The Italian cases of TDR-TB predates all of them - the two victims contracted it and had it for several years before dying in 2003.

People already infected with treatable TB require a regimen to fully eliminate it. It can reside deep in the lungs. If they get released before the treatment is completed, they often don't complete their treatment on their own. This is also a contributing factor in the rise of treatment-resistant TB. You also cannot isolate incoming inmates who are infected - not in the current system. Although we should.

and yah, the treatment protocol is insane. 6 months for "normal" strains and 2+ years for hard to treat strains.

who the fark would keep taking these meds, with nasty side-effects, when you have no TB symptoms. shudder. I know that I would have trouble staying on the regiment and I know better and have full access to healthcare.

1) didnt see those interviews, would have been awesome.
2) I loved that movie for showing just how simple it is for disease to spread.
3) I cant read "The Stand" without getting cold and flue symptoms.

there are TB outbreaks in California from time to time, mostly from people visiting from over seas or people that have recently been over seas. There is a particularly bad version of it, call MDR-TB (Multiple Drug Resistant Tuberculosis) that people around these parts are hoping to never see hit the states.

yeah the nasty I was talking about has already been brought up. The TDR version, not MDR... MDR shows up sometimes, TDR is bad news. I was reading about some of the outbreaks in India about 6 months ago and it was troublesome.

Poorer countries where there is little medical care are reservoirs of disease. That's why we need to treat the poor here in the US because they will become sources of infection if we don't.
