FTFA: That ratcheting up of the video surveillance game is unnerving Republicans who insist that even by political standards, it's a gross invasion of privacy. Worse, they say, it creates a safety risk for members of Congress and their families at a time when they are already on edge after a deranged gunman shot former Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords 18 months ago.

Cry me a farking river. The only thing Republicans were on edge about after the Giffords incident was whether they would be blamed for inciting the shooting. The fact that it turned out to be just some random loon and not a Teabagger was nothing but pure luck on their part, considering how much they have done to paint Democrats as worthy of a bullet in the head for their "treason" and desire "to destroy America."

You don't want Democratic operatives causing a safety hazard by broadcasting your front yard for all the world to see? Then don't create a bigger one by telling armed rednecks with the mentality of a 13 year old that your colleagues are out to destroy them. Until then, I'll tell you where to shove your outrage.

Yea, but two wrongs...blah de blah blah...

Sigh. Sometimes being fair isn't being right. It doesn't matter if they're hypocrites or terrible human beings, their behavior doesn't make doing it back to them correct. We're better than that, and we should be ashamed when someone purportedly on our side uses our opponents' tactics against them.

Hyjamon: I would attempt to try to turn it on them. Maybe go outside and give stump speeches to those video taping, or just put up posters either positive for you or negative against your opponent. Maybe get your 12 son to run around the house naked with the curtains down and then arrest them for creating child porn. Do like Boogie nights and stand naked in front of a window with a huge fake-one in between your legs. Get some people to fake a zombie attack on the house. Put a fake body bag in the trunk of your car and pull it into the house. Sneak out of the house in a spider man costume.

Most of those would be hilarious.

Weaver95: but the GOP says that it's ok for the cops, the military and for corporations to follow us around/track our movements. why is it wrong to follow the GOP's own agenda and track their every movement? this is the sort of thing they want to have happen to all of us.

First, you are inventing motivations for the behavior which are not supported in the article. So far, all we know is that a bunch of individuals are acting damn creepy with the cameras.

Second, I don't support the behavior by any party. I feel like this is one of those instances where indulging in the behavior you abhor undermines your own message. I believe there are more appropriate forums to protest constant surveillance - for example, an organized group event, maybe some sort of flash mob if you want a viral feel - instead of just randomly stalking individuals. I think focusing on individuals in this manner is likely to backfire - if elected officials feel threatened, it is going to result in more of a wall between them and the public. I think MORE surveillance and security will result from making people in power feel that they are not safe in society.

Third, government agents are held to a standard of conduct which is (in theory if not always effective in reality) available for review by elected officials and therefore controlled by the political process. Like I said above, there is are more effective forums, in my opinion.

For those keeping track:

Republicans think it's a good idea to record your personal emails and phone calls from inside your home without a warrant (NDAA).

Republicans think it's a bad idea to record video from a public street.

Hyjamon: czei: While sitting outside a politician's home and broadcasting video is creepy, the article just didn't bother to see who's behind it. How hard would it have been to call up some of the opponents of the people running against to see if they are indeed financing this sort of surveillance, and if so, what they hoped to gain from it.

Of course, we know why Republicans aren't videotaping they're opponents: they're too busy taping other things:

Former GOP city chair busted for videotaping naked boys

I would attempt to try to turn it on them.

I am sure there are some farkers out here with more devious minds than mine that can devise some other ways to make this backfire.

Welcome to my favorites list.

brigid_fitch: When Obama was running for Senate, Alan Keyes hired some douche to follow him around and catch him doing or saying something Keyes could use against him.

If I was running for office and I picked up on these little asshats, I'd invite them behind closed doors, offer them coffee, donuts, beer...whatever, have a relaxed conversation with them for an hour or so, then tell them "I know you're watching me. Now I'm watching you. Oh, by the way, I have a message for your boss - *hands him an envelope*. Now get the fark out."

I think it'd scare off the weaker ones. I have no idea what would be in the envelope, but that's because I haven't thought my cunning plan all the way through yet.

There was an MSNBC host last weekend that actively and explicitly called on viewers to trespass on David Koch's property and harass him, even giving the date, time, and address of a fundraiser being held there. It was creepy, and very inappropriate. IMO the host should have been fired from the network, but I doubt he will.

You made your bed, GOP. You shower adulation on that jerkbag clown James O'Keefe and his ilk- this is exactly what you deserve.

You created this mess. You set the tone. You laid down the rules. This is your game, don't whine when someone plays it better than you do.

The personal emails and phone calls would be reviewed by a duly authorized and properly trained agent of Small GovernmentTM. An example might be the fine men and women of the TSA. Video recorded by a private individual on a public street has no such inherent protections.

Republicans are getting very concerned that voters are actually paying attention to them

Right, sitting in a car outside your house with a camera and following your movements to post on YouTube isn't creepy at all, it's "paying attention."

These Democrats would do well to drop their "well it's fair game" justification and show some class.

Seriously. You'd never see a Republican do something sleazy to win an election. This has everything to do with party affiliation.

brigid_fitch: Cool story from Obama's biography that always makes me chuckle: When Obama was running for Senate, Alan Keyes hired some douche to follow him around and catch him doing or saying something Keyes could use against him. For three days, this guy followed Obama, never being more than 10-15' behind him. After the guy followed Obama into the men's room of some hotel where he was giving a speech, Obama turned right around and walked into an area he knew where the press was waiting.

"Hey, guys--this is Jason. My opponent hired him to shadow me until the election. Why don't you ask him what he's supposed to find out?" And the press descended on the guy like a swarm of locusts and lambasted Keyes in the press the next day. The guy never followed Obama again.

BWAHAHAHA that's hilarious. I need to read that book sometime.

These are the people who want every pregnancy int he United States to be monitored so that an abortion cannot happen. These are the people who instituted illegal wiretaps and the recording of any private conversation on any media that they deem fit to record - without your permission.

And then there's McConnel who says outrageous crap (like intentionally crashing the economy to prevent President Obama's second term, or 30,000,000 uninsured Americans "isn't the issue") when there's obviously a camera recording him. Yet he likely won't leave office until he decides to retire, so I guess "paying attention" is relative.

Just because they do it.... doesn't mean we should do it. I understand a lot of the sentiment here, but it really is bad. We are better than that.

Taking the high road hasn't helped. The GOP has made it clear they're going to do whatever they can, including sabatoging the economy and this country, to win. This is the party who tells you that if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear, that warrantless wiretaps are good, that brown people should have to carry papers proving they're here legally, that supports secret prisons and detention for anyone labled an "enemy combatant", puts target reticles on their opponents and sends scumbag liars into the offices of people they don't like to get footage they can edit to amke it look like something underhanded was going on.

This is the party that thought it was OK to out a CIA agent because democrats. They support laws that make it possible to arrest or detain people who film police officers in public.

The GOP and the right wing are about abrogation of privacy in our lives, healthcare, relationships, homes and business decisions. Nobody on the right has any ground to stand on when someone points a camera at their house.

This is not and never has been about "class". The American public does not respect "class" or civility. The American public does not care if you're polite- in fact, it is seen as a weakness.

By themselves, yeah, kind of creepy, but if it's actually just rough footage for campaign commercials, I don't see the problem. It's almost like second unit film work in that it works for establishing shot and the like.

2012-07-09 02:31:58 PM
In 1995 the American Coalition of Life Activists (ACLA) circulated this poster which lists the names, home and work addresses of doctors who perform abortions. This group has also assembled dossiers on abortion providers, politicians, judges, clinic employees and other abortion rights supporters. The ACLA won a lawsuit over this because they DID NOT DIRECTLY THREATEN these doctors.

The 7th name on this list is that of George Tiller, who, while attending church, was shot to death by an anti-abortion activist.

img862.imageshack.us

I agree that following people around, filming them and their homes, and posting that information on the internet is creepy.
Where did these tea bagger freshmen congressmen stand on this issue when their anti-abortion allies were stalking Dr. Tiller?

Let's be clear about this: These congressmen don't give a rat's ass about your privacy or your legal rights. They champion some of the most intrusive government policies this country has ever seen. Given the chance they would dictate your religion, your sexual activities, your health care choices and they would spy on you constantly, keeping track of where you go, what you say and do, what you read and what you write. This is especially true if you don't happen to be white.

So the tea baggers can complain and whine about being filmed and followed, but their behavior warrants this sort of scrutiny. They aren't the sort of people you really want to trust. Don't take your eye off them, because they are vicious and vile and dangerous.

2012-07-09 02:32:19 PM
If they were smart, they'd spin the attention into something harmless. Dress the entire family up as superheros and walk outside or other equally pointless ideas. Hell, give a speech while dresses a Batman, just to know that it gets on Youtube. A simple "people will laugh because I'm dressed funny, but they will listen to my message" setup could yield huge results.

But, this is the GOP. They'll be pissy and complain about the lost dignity, then return to stapling tea bags to their made-in-china-hat.

Jim_Callahan: Great, we can't get an entire damned room full of the media to ask a single actual policy question at like 99% of presidential press meetings, but we've got people creepily videotaping the private residences of political candidates for the benefit of stalkers and potential assassins.

Glad everyone's got their priorities in order and everything.

So you're completely opposed to the domestic use of drones?

2012-07-09 02:52:41 PM
I find it an interesting indication of their mindset that the first thing these GOP reps think to bring up when confronted with video of their homes whose addresses are a matter of public record is their ability & willingness to repel borders.

Why wouldn't they, as public servants, first think of the positive publicity & voter accessibility?

I'd like to add that the best security is a tight-knit community of neighbors. Why do they feel so besieged? In their own community?

Hard to see the "shared sacrifice" when politicians live in gated communities while ordinary Americans struggle. (And yes, applies to both sides.)

But, hypocrisy is one of the foundations of the modern GOP. Advocating placing additional hardship on the poor when you live in luxury is morally repugnant.
