FTFC:

Stockton writ large can't come soon enough. One of the many worries Tocqueville had about democracy was that economic complacency would kill our chances at future revolutions. And needless to say he wasn't talking about OWS types hitting the streets demanding bigger government. He was talking about something in the other direction.

As for me, I've started a little salon called The New Colonists. We aren't planning to colonize anything (although I love the idea), but rather it's our freedom that has been colonized. Right now it's mostly Gin and Tonics at the club, but we got moving on one action plan last week.

Each of us is re-writing our living wills so that if we slip into a coma we are crystal clear that we want every last penny spent keeping us alive long past any visible brain activity. In fact I'm instructing my doctor to do all he can to see if he can to get my knees and hips replaced while I'm out so that I can do my part to sink this ship of socialized medicine. If enough of us do that then eventually the Obama (or perhaps Romney) crowd will simply have to kill us to cut costs. Who knows? Maybe then The New Colonists salon might spring up in another city or two with a few more ideas. The next thing you know they'll start shutting us down...maybe take a few shots at us...hey a guy can dream, can't he?

You see as New Colonists, the end game is to cycle through this whole Boston Massacre, Bunker Hill thing a second time. Hmm...maybe we should open a Stockton branch...or a Harrisburg, PA branch?

Are you happy John Roberts? Your traitorism made God attack the East coast with storms taking out power to over 2 Million people.

That's weird, I didn't see anything about dog whistles in that article. Just a lot of complaining about how only white people are competent enough to create effective government.

I've heard this yarn before. It's the new reason why socialism doesn't result in hellfire in Sweden. The idea is that while socialism is OK in Sweden, it will fail in the US because of lazy black people. It performs three functions for the believer.

1. "Logically" invalidates the example of functioning socialism in Sweden.
2. Reinforces the welfare queen meme.
3. Titillates the fear of immigrants.

And it forgets this...

According to Eurostat, in 2010, there were 1.33 million foreign-born residents in Sweden, corresponding to 14.3% of the total population. Of these, 859 000 (9.2%) were born outside the EU and 477 000 (5.1%) were born in another EU Member State.[9][10] The largest groups were:

Finland Finland (166,723)
Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Former Yugoslavia (155,166)
Iraq Iraq (125,499)
Poland Poland (72,865)
Iran Iran (63,828)
Germany Germany (48,442)
Denmark Denmark (44,951)
Turkey Turkey (43,909)
Norway Norway (43,058)
Somalia Somalia (40,165)

Why did I read that? That guy has to be a long-winded and insufferable douchebag in person. Naive and simplistic yet overblown bullsh*t. Reminds me of College Republican Syndrome. So, to recap: government healthcare (universal, single-payer?) is impossible in America because there are too many of us and our racial makeup is too diverse to for us to share common interests.

I don't see why I should be fined $695 for declining to participate in an overpriced and dysfunctional "insurance" "market."

What a dumb asshole.

In 2012, on Earth - the planet on which we have lived since we evolved to live here - our infrastructure is still being crippled by WEATHER. "Oh shiat! A storm! No one told me about those when I was drawing up this design!"

Look, there are some oil + water issues in Europe with cultural mixing since some areas have families that have lived in literally the same 5 or 10 square miles for hundreds of years and only married into 5 or 10 other families. It can result in some refusal to mix new elements in, there. Local laws tend, for instance, to be working around some pretty specific cultural norms, so an immigrant's customs might introduce complications that no one had even thought of before.

The US is a little different, there's not a citizen alive that can truthfully claim a pure cultural line of descent from a given nation of origin four generations back, much less a specific region. There's a lot of sound and fury about integrating immigrant populations (because we're a loud and argumentative folk, no excuses there), but in actual practice historically the nation as a whole typically can't be arsed to give a fark. Our laws are intentionally kept relatively generalized, flexible, and easily modified (the last obviously has its downsides, too, see things like Creationism, etc) and "you're not allowed to pick on the new guy" is explicitly written into the constitution so people writing laws tend to be aware of the possible need to adapt in advance.

//The exception being the full integration of formerly enslaved races into the mainstream culture, as that was tied to a lot of other big national economic and political issues and inter-state power struggles over the decades.

Thanks to Obamacare, in matters of health provision, whether you're in favor of socialized medicine or truly private health care, Swedes and Italians are now freer than Americans: They have a state system and a private system, and both are relatively simple. What's simple in micro-regulated America? In health care, we now have what's nominally a private system encrusted with so many statist barnacles that it no longer functions as either a private or a state system.

So, the author would prefer to repeal Obamacare's private sector regulations, replace them with a huge national service capable of covering everyone, and let everyone choose between public or private.

No, counter-intuitive as it might seem he seems to be implying it should be further deregulated and privatized even though over the last few decades the electric power industry has shifted from a regulated monopoly to a more free market model. Which has led to serious and unaddressed strains on the physical infrastructure as well as a range of perverse incentives. Should have spent that Iraq money upgrading the grid and finding the right balance of central planning and encouraging competition while providing government oversight.

That would mean... slashing our military budget, instituting single-payer health care, eviscerating our judicial sector's power, instituting a monarchy, etc etc.

What, you mean turning over public infrastructure to unaccountable companies that need to show 5% growth every quarter, have no qualms about cutting corners or raising rates to meet earnings targets, and can pay their executives hefty salaries and bonuses instead of improving their service might not be the best idea?

You will never go broke in America spewing the Republican party line. They'll make sure you are paid, one way or another, as long as you continue to convince others to vote against their own interests. Syndicated columns, book deals, speaking fees, cushy jobs in various "think" tanks - all this can be yours for just turning off reason and allowing the derp to flow through you. You don't even have to be very good at it.
