I can see the resemblance... But can Gandalf play that funky music?

That's Gandalf teh Ghey!

Ya know, one of the things I loved about the LotR trilogy was how much work they did to get things close to Alan Lee's fairly iconic illustrations. This poster has quite a similar feel to those.

And I can't see it without hearing the Shire music in my head.

seems subby and shortlist are farking retarded as that poster does in fact inspire excitement in anyone who knows half a shiat about the Hobbit...

A prequel is never late. Nor is it early; it arrives PRECISELY when it means to.

So the poster is bland,so what? I only care about what the movie will look like, subby.

I hate that marketing has to show ties to LoTR. The Hobbit is a good story on its own.

Oh goodie I get to be "that guy":

*AHEM*

The Hobbit was boring and I have never been able to finish it.

I wonder how it will compare to LotR. By that I mean, will I contemplate suicide before or after the 90 minute mark.

The road is difficult, and the ring is a heavy burden...did they mention that?

It definitely does bring to mind the Shire music. I'm excited for this movie! Just to see that world again, and of course the 48fps, it's gonna look pretty slick I think.

FTFA "not exactly gripping"

...I'm confused. What did they want the poster to be?

Never been able to finish The Hobbit? It's a kids book that you should be able to get through in a short afternoon. It's worth giving it another shot.

For people that do really like the book, may I recommend the annotated version. It goes into serious detail on nearly every name, imagery, or reference Tolkien used and gives you a much better look at the scholarly part of the author.

In all fairness The Hobbit is a kid's book. Tolkien was just learning the "show, don't tell" skill in writing. There's lots of space in the story that will be filled in by the movies.

/If he'd only learned not to "have characters sing a song every other page"

I know it's just a poster, but I have a raging ent in my pants right now.

I'm eager to see Smaug, and if he can take the "most badass movie monster" title away from the Balrog...

With the popularity of "Game of Thrones" on HBO, I'm hoping like hell they didn't do something completely stupid like add a dragon to The Hobbit just because they're popular now.

I'm guessing we'll get a teaser of him in part 1 and won't see the full-on dragon until part 2.

But yeah, right with ya ... Dragons are so poorly done in most movies, I want this one to be good.

Well, that would be OK as long as they don't give it some kind of cheap cheesy death, like having Legolas shoot it with his bow.

What I'm really curious to see is how they set the tone of the film. The books (Hobbit vs LotR) were very different in tone. However, the studio might want it to be more consistent between all of the films. I just don't want the sense of a fun adventure to be lost just to make it fit in with the "world-destroying menace" of the previous trilogy.

Really? You made it through the first half of Fellowship of the Ring, the most boring section of book I've ever read, but couldn't make it through The Hobbit?

/Huge Tolkien fan, but seriously, the first time through FotR was like pulling teeth. Took me 4 times to finally make it through.

You know, everyone rags on all the songs, but after hearing the dwarves (goddammit spellcheck that is how Tolkien spells the word) sing in the trailer I want to hear more.

I really want to see This creative team try to tackle the story that Tolkien alluded to, but never told, of Gandalf leading what amounts to a commando raid against Sauron while he was regaining his strength in Mirkwood Forest

I love the fact they are doing a movie
Still hate the fact that Bilbo's in East Lansing closed because they were afraid of getting sued, the carvings above the booths in that place rocked as did the Hobbit Sticks with dill dip

well sir, i think today is your lucky day. Part of the justification for stretching it out to 2 movies is the addition of that battle (also i think they like it because it ties the hobbit directly to the LOTR movies for audiences who haven't read the books.) I'd heard that they were hoping Chris lee would be healthy enough to do it, but i never heard if they were actually able to get him in there. saruman is still a good guy in the hobbit
