That tag should be stupid. The "Victim" is an adult.

She should be fired and probably have her teaching license pulled for farking a student, but if the guy was 18 it's just a stupid waste of resources to charge her with a felony and lock her up for as much as 20 years.

It always amazes me how the "small government" and "freedom loving" conservatives are so eager for the government to get involved in private consensual activities among adults and to lock people up who have done no actual harm to anybody.

High schools often offer interesting elective classes when they have the staff for it. My guess is that she teaches core classes or common electives like biology or anthropology as well, but they can offer forensics as well just because she has the expertise for it.

I understand not wanting people engaging in sex acts with another person with whom they have authority over - but there's also common sense. What level of coercion was involved, etc. Of course, that leaves a huge grey area. In cases where there are two consenting adults, the law shouldn't be involved. Fire her ass on ethics violations. Leave the cops out of it (unless there is compelling evidence of that aforementioned coercion).

I would hope so. But, they specifically referred to her as a forensic science teacher rather than a chemistry or biology teacher. Hence my question. A chemistry teacher who teaches one elective in forensics would likely be referred to as a chemistry teacher. A high school has no business offering more than one class in something so specialized.

Regardless, she's an idiot.

I think it points out that if your school building sucks, something stupid is going to happen. Look up Brooklyn-Cayce HS, SC, that school has really cool structure. It was built over 100 years ago and has been maintained. Although I won't tell you sex hasn't happened their, just not involving teachers. The geeks used the band room, while the rest went home for their fun. (atleast when I was there)

I don't think it's overreaching by the government. She's a teacher and he's a student at the school. Unless the adult student has graduated and left the school, she's crossing a line in a teacher/student relationship. Plus she's married anyways so it's showing she has poor judgement. I'm behind her being charged in this.

So, should a manager be jailed for farking his secretary? Both adults, he has authority over her. Do parole officers go to jail if the nail parolees?

The whole thing of being an adult is that you're capable of making decisions. Statutory rape is about farking people who are (in the eyes of the law) incapable of making a decision about their sexuality. If we're saying that they're sexually an adult then they are capable of making those decisions.

My own view? It's a firing. Teachers who do it should get kicked out of the school because it's inappropriate behaviour for a school teacher, in the same way that a boss farking his secretary is. But neither should be about the law being involved.

Agreed. And if that wasn't bad enough...

Improper relationship between educators and students is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

20. Farking. Years.

That's beyond "deterrence". That's beyond "punishment". That's to the level of "farking up the rest of someone's life".

Unless you're a violent farked-up individual, or someone who has done something seriously wrong to lots of other people, 20 years in jail is ridiculous.

I'll go with 20 years is extreme in this case, but in others? If you're a teacher bonking a 15 year old? 20 years is appropriate.

What IS it with the rash of hot female teachers boinking kids these days? Did it always happen, and it's just that we're now reporting it? I knew a guy who lost his virginity to his teacher when he was 14. Never turned her in. Maybe that's how stuff went 20 years ago. Nowadays these pervs get caught?

I have not heard a story about a male doing this in like two years. I assume it is still happening, but maybe it's just under-reported because the female pervs garner more clicks from people who find it sexy?

Added to append--I have middle schoolers around me all year long. NONE of them are even slightly objects of sexual desire, despite some of them towering over me. They're still so obviously kids in their behaviors and speech. If you're gonna be attracted to that, then you are a pedo, period.

Maybe high schoolers are less embarrassingly socially immature, but I dunno. I recently had to hang out with a few newly-minted HS grads, and though they were more developed emotionally than the middle schoolers, and you could see how they would become interesting adults, they still had a level of innocence and inexperience that spoke of childhood. Hell, by the time I was a senior in college these youngsters were no longer sexually attractive to me.

It is ABSOLUTELY overreaching by the government.

If the student is an adult, it's none of the government's business unless there is evidence of ACTUAL coercion. And whether she's married or not is irrelevant, it might be grounds for divorce but it's not a crime to fark around.

We're not talking about kiddy diddling here, we're talking about the right of two consenting adults to have sex. A law criminalizing that is unconstitutional.

Have to agree with basically everyone here and say that this is asinine. If he's an adult then he's an adult. He's old enough to be legally responsible for whatever decisions he's making. Now if they want to write a law that automatically gets teachers fired for sleeping with students then that's another matter. But a max of 20 years for having consenting sex with another adult? Retarded.

Sounds like grounds for the teacher getting fired, and a lawsuit, if the adult student believes coercion occurred.

It has to be considered that an 18-year-old might choose to have this relationship. The infringes upon an adult's freedom to make that choice, and unlike with the prostitution example of criminalizing sex between consenting adults, this law treats only one party as a criminal.

Fark Me To Tears: FTFA: Even though the alleged victim in this case is legally an adult, Texas law was strengthened in 2003 to outlaw sexual relationships between teachers and students, even if it's among consenting adults.

Wow. Big Government in Texas... Whodathunkit?

Still legal in South Dakota!

swahnhennessy: I understand not wanting people engaging in sex acts with another person with whom they have authority over - but there's also common sense. What level of coercion was involved, etc. Of course, that leaves a huge grey area. In cases where there are two consenting adults, the law shouldn't be involved. Fire her ass on ethics violations. Leave the cops out of it (unless there is compelling evidence of that aforementioned coercion).

Two adults. Consenting. It is a violation of thier basic human rights to deny them some action..... now then the school's policy may forbid this sort of thing, so dismissal may in fact be valid, as they may also have the right to expell him. Texas law has no right to specify who I can and cannot throw the vein ladden meat pipe on a Friday after 3 jager bombs and a 40oz of malt liquor.

Yet more proof that women love texting and have an insatiable desire to have pictures of penis sent to them at all times. I declare today "Text Your Penis to a Woman" Day.
Don't ask. It should be an unsolicited gift from you to the female object of your affection, and if possible, not someone who texts with you regularly.

skinink: ""Texas law was strengthened in 2003 to outlaw sexual relationships between teachers and students, even if it's among consenting adults."
I don't think it's overreaching by the government. She's a teacher and he's a student at the school. Unless the adult student has graduated and left the school, she's crossing a line in a teacher/student relationship. Plus she's married anyways so it's showing she has poor judgement. I'm behind her being charged in this.

Unless there's a similar felony penalty for employer-employee sex, then hell yeah it's government overreach.

How'd you like to be thrown in prison for twenty years for being ratted out by one of your one-night stands? This is a draconian penalty.

I blame the feminists. This is all part of that protecting a woman from somebody in position of authority over her thing. They just never realized it would be used against a woman. The intent was to protect a poor innocent female student/employee/intern, regardless of age. against an evil predatory male teacher/boss/President

Remember this the crowd that gave us "all sex is rape" and if a woman cries rape we must believe her. They claim equality and some even want to officially serve in combat as Infantry but at the same time they demand special laws like this and Violence Against Women Act to protect them against us males.

Improper relationship between educators and students is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison."

Holy shiat, Texas! WTF!
That's a little bit excessive, don't you think???

This makes complete sense if your prison system is run for-profit.

Quite a few states have similar laws.

One of the things about the USA is that you have the right to say anything, even things that are incredibly cruel and obscene and offensive, and not be in trouble (with the government) for it. Our freedom of speech in that regard is likely the strongest in the world.

Sorry, but I don't feel bad for her. If genders were switched outrage would be at full derp levels. Besides it's about authority and control. A teacher has far more authority than a therapist plus students can't leave school without reprisal. The student being 18 doesn't change the reckless use of this authority.

Quite simply, if you can't control yourself and act with responsibility, then you should not hold a public position of authority. Sorry, but I don't care about her punishment as she knew the risks and legal duties of her occupation. She could have quit to pursue this affair if it meant so much.

It could be a vocational school. My district had one of those (shared with a couple other counties) - you could spend 11th/12th grades there learning auto mechanicry, electricianeering, and such.

I too think it should be punishable . . . as soon as politicians get similar prison time for their otherwise-legal activities with co-workers, particularly those over whom they have authority, even if they're consenting adults.

Compare the size of Texas and Great Britain. You'd almost have to compare the backwardsness of the USA with the backwardsness of parts of Europe.
Also, in the US the culture of generations of backwoods behavior is now almost instantly connected to the 21st century with Wal*Marts and internets and major news outlets within a stone's throw everywhere. I'm sure, at some point in the next few years, we'll be hearing about the inbred craziness in remote parts of Europe and Asia.
/Still centuries away from finding out what's been going on in Africa, though.

lack of warmth: Jamieboy: miss diminutive: Lionel Mandrake: Why is a British news(-ish) outlet the number one source for stories about American student-diddlers?

Also, why does every one of these stories always have a pic of the front of the school? Every school looks pretty much the same anyway, it's not like it's bringing anything to the story.

We all know what schools look like and posting pics does not bring anything to the story except fill up space. But since this 'victim' is 18 and an adult, I'd like to see a pics of him to see if he was worth all the time, trouble and the end of a teaching career.

Mrs. Coast - whose son starts at BCHS in three years - is now unsure whether or not she wants him to be a band geek like her.
