That tag should be stupid. The "Victim" is an adult.

FTFA: Even though the alleged victim in this case is legally an adult, Texas law was strengthened in 2003 to outlaw sexual relationships between teachers and students, even if it's among consenting adults.

Wow. Big Government in Texas... Whodathunkit?

She should be fired and probably have her teaching license pulled for farking a student, but if the guy was 18 it's just a stupid waste of resources to charge her with a felony and lock her up for as much as 20 years.

It always amazes me how the "small government" and "freedom loving" conservatives are so eager for the government to get involved in private consensual activities among adults and to lock people up who have done no actual harm to anybody.

It's something the Daily Fail can easily be outraged about, which is their entire reason for continued existence, and we green it because who the fark knows? I guess Drew likes the fact that the site is basically identical to the media it used to mock with stories produced at a predictable interval.

Seriously, this shouldn't even be a legal issue. If the school wants to have that policy, then fine. But for the state to get involved here is just flat out over-reaching. I'm sure we all feel served and protected now that this monster is off the street.

I think what we can learn from all of this is that for every teacher that gets busted because the boy student is STUPID enough to open his mouth about it there are who knows how many other teacher/student relationships that never are known about!!!

I miss my 10th grade english teacher!!!!

The mugshot is a bit unflattering, to be sure, but it's not hard to see that she'd look pretty good under normal circumstances.
I'm reserving my final opinion until I see the rest of her, but she does have a cute face.

High schools often offer interesting elective classes when they have the staff for it. My guess is that she teaches core classes or common electives like biology or anthropology as well, but they can offer forensics as well just because she has the expertise for it.

This makes complete sense if your prison system is run for-profit.

I understand not wanting people engaging in sex acts with another person with whom they have authority over - but there's also common sense. What level of coercion was involved, etc. Of course, that leaves a huge grey area. In cases where there are two consenting adults, the law shouldn't be involved. Fire her ass on ethics violations. Leave the cops out of it (unless there is compelling evidence of that aforementioned coercion).

I would hope so. But, they specifically referred to her as a forensic science teacher rather than a chemistry or biology teacher. Hence my question. A chemistry teacher who teaches one elective in forensics would likely be referred to as a chemistry teacher. A high school has no business offering more than one class in something so specialized.

Regardless, she's an idiot.

We all know what schools look like and posting pics does not bring anything to the story except fill up space. But since this 'victim' is 18 and an adult, I'd like to see a pics of him to see if he was worth all the time, trouble and the end of a teaching career.

I think it points out that if your school building sucks, something stupid is going to happen. Look up Brooklyn-Cayce HS, SC, that school has really cool structure. It was built over 100 years ago and has been maintained. Although I won't tell you sex hasn't happened their, just not involving teachers. The geeks used the band room, while the rest went home for their fun. (atleast when I was there)

""Texas law was strengthened in 2003 to outlaw sexual relationships between teachers and students, even if it's among consenting adults."

I don't think it's overreaching by the government. She's a teacher and he's a student at the school. Unless the adult student has graduated and left the school, she's crossing a line in a teacher/student relationship. Plus she's married anyways so it's showing she has poor judgement. I'm behind her being charged in this.

So, should a manager be jailed for farking his secretary? Both adults, he has authority over her. Do parole officers go to jail if the nail parolees?

The whole thing of being an adult is that you're capable of making decisions. Statutory rape is about farking people who are (in the eyes of the law) incapable of making a decision about their sexuality. If we're saying that they're sexually an adult then they are capable of making those decisions.

My own view? It's a firing. Teachers who do it should get kicked out of the school because it's inappropriate behaviour for a school teacher, in the same way that a boss farking his secretary is. But neither should be about the law being involved.

That is an issue for her employing institution to decide. Criminalizing human sexual behavior BETWEEN CONSENTING ADULTS at the taxpayer's expense is pants-on-head stupid.

Agreed. And if that wasn't bad enough...

Improper relationship between educators and students is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

20. Farking. Years.

That's beyond "deterrence". That's beyond "punishment". That's to the level of "farking up the rest of someone's life".

Unless you're a violent farked-up individual, or someone who has done something seriously wrong to lots of other people, 20 years in jail is ridiculous.

You can murder people and be out in less time than that.

Technically, any consenting relationship between a couple where one partner has a supervisory or authority relationship is potentially sexual harassment under federal law, this is just a slight upgrade on that rule.

I'll go with 20 years is extreme in this case, but in others? If you're a teacher bonking a 15 year old? 20 years is appropriate.

What IS it with the rash of hot female teachers boinking kids these days? Did it always happen, and it's just that we're now reporting it? I knew a guy who lost his virginity to his teacher when he was 14. Never turned her in. Maybe that's how stuff went 20 years ago. Nowadays these pervs get caught?

I have not heard a story about a male doing this in like two years. I assume it is still happening, but maybe it's just under-reported because the female pervs garner more clicks from people who find it sexy?

Added to append--I have middle schoolers around me all year long. NONE of them are even slightly objects of sexual desire, despite some of them towering over me. They're still so obviously kids in their behaviors and speech. If you're gonna be attracted to that, then you are a pedo, period.

Maybe high schoolers are less embarrassingly socially immature, but I dunno. I recently had to hang out with a few newly-minted HS grads, and though they were more developed emotionally than the middle schoolers, and you could see how they would become interesting adults, they still had a level of innocence and inexperience that spoke of childhood. Hell, by the time I was a senior in college these youngsters were no longer sexually attractive to me.
