Honest Bender: China is poor as fark. The common man is more worried about who is going to take care of them in their old age than where they'll be able to pick up the newest iWhatever.

China has more than 500,000 millionaires (about 5% of the world's total), so while there's lots of poor people in China, there's also lots of rich people. Add in that showing off your wealth is a big part of Chinese culture, it should be a huge market for status-symbol phones like iphones. Apple is worried about copyright theft, otherwise there'll be much more stores.
