He's 95 in that video and still that coherent and lucid? Holy crap, man. Love that guy. You'll be missed, Santini.

2012-07-08 09:44:25 PM
Honestly I didn't even know the guy was still alive. But he was a legend, no doubt about it.

2012-07-08 09:48:49 PM
He was the old guy in The Black Hole, that was like 33 years ago. He's been old longer than Burgess Meredith. RIP

Well that was a weird way to find out he's dead.

Absolutely this.

If I can go from the condition he's in in this video to dead in two months, and at 95?! I hope that by then there'll be a 'winning' tag that someone will link to my profile page upon my expiration. If there's not, a 'spiffy' or 'cool' will do just fine. But 'sad', it is not (IMHO).

HA! And he did that on Fox & Fiends? hahahahahahal;lknl;knlknbf

oh man! Holy sh*t. I'm really laughing hard over here. Jesus... Man, I never saw him in anything I didn't like. Always a good time watching a movie or TV show with Ernie in it. I even watched McHale's Navy one summer. I was on a TVLand kick I think. Aside from the hair, the guy never friggin aged until he died. Unreal.

Saw him being interviewed by Bill Orilley last week. What a wonderful person he was with great Hollywood stories to tell. We lost a good one.

Ted's last musical gig was working as the opening act for Styx and REO Speedwagon. A fate worse than death? Perhaps.

Maybe, except those nostalgia rock tours bring in shiatloads of money. If he's smart he's working on playing Branson Missouri for the rest of his life.

My reaction to Cabbie was much the same as Ernest's initial reaction, so this is a rather sad way to remember him.

Subby, that was a wonderful clip, thank you.

2012-07-09 01:27:17 AM
The most recent thing I've watched with him in it is the original Flight of the Phoenix, the Jimmy Stewart version. Of course, the whole cast of that movie was great, but Borgnine made a great crazy guy, too.

/finally made it to the oasis

WOW! And that was two months ago? Farking allah he looks more like 75 than 95.

I keep being reminded of all the movies he was in; "BLACK HOLE"!

And from the clip: Little did he know that people would be saying 'Awwww, he's dead in real life'.

I'm surprised but low level of snark in these threads.

One of the greats along with Lee Van Cleef although I can't see him playing Lee Van Cleef's role in Escape from NY at all.

Is LVC dead too? Oh shiat - yeah, he died in '89.

Enjoyed the many roles Borgnine played over the years. Probably one of the most touching was a cameo on the old show Home Improvement.

Eddie Phillips: I was married to Tildy for 45 years, and the woman drove me absolutely crazy. She had these ugly little porcelain cats that she loved to line up on a windowsill. Every day for 45 years, I used to take those cats off the windowsill and put them in a cupboard. And every day for 45 years, she'd take the cats out of the cupboard and put them back on the windowsill.
Tim Taylor: Where are they now?
Eddie Phillips: On a windowsill.
Tim Taylor: You didn't throw them out?
Eddie Phillips: What for? You don't have to understand a woman. All you have to do is love her.

My husband and I met Ernest Borgnine last year at DragonCon. He took a picture with us, it was great. We couldn't believe how spry and sharp he was for 94. A guy came in dressed as Mermaidman from SpongeBob (a really good costume, too), and EB just jumped right up, laughing, and shook his hand, full of gusto.

That's how I want to be in my 90s.

2012-07-09 09:31:55 AM
Borgnine has looked old since the 1950's, which is one way of seeming like you lived forever. Anyway, great guy and sorry he passed.

Always loved Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders.

(power goes out)
"Uhoh, we better eat all the ice cream!"

(dog dies)
"So little Billy, the boy who looks just like you went through terrible irredeemable grief."

"So evil wins, Grandpa?"
"That's right Billy, even your tiny soul is doomed."

Rogo in The Poseidon Adventure, General Worden in The Dirty Dozen, Marty, Mermaidman, Cabbie, McHale, . He was a great actor back in a time when film acting looked like acting. Today's standards your acting has to look real, but back then there was a certain grace. He seemed to approach the craft with great love for it. What a great career.

Incorrect. Wilford Brimley.

As a frame of reference, Tom Cruise turned 50 this week.

When Wilford Brimley filmed Cocoon in 85 or so, HE WAS 50.

But Abe Vigoda is older than all.

2012-07-09 10:05:34 AM
yeah I went awww too. Also in the Poseidon adventure.

he had a gentleness and charm that shone through every role. He did a wonderful role in a short film about 9 /11 I forget the title. There were a bunch of movies all 9 minutes and 11 seconds long and he played a widower and was amazing.

I'm happy to see that he was healthy and sharp at 95.

AMonkey'sUncle: And yet, there were the stories of how he treated Ethel Merman. Oh, well, he's not here to defend himself.

From all that I've read on Ethel Merman, it was probably a two-way street. Merman was about ten years older than Borgnine. They both had been married multiple times already when they first met and they dated for only four weeks before they got married. Given all of this plus their reputed hugh egos (especially in Merman's case), that marriage was doomed from the start to crash and burn spectacularly.

You just had to pick the worst Airwolf photo on the entire internets, didn't you?

Wasn't Pirate Jim their secret boss or something? I believe he mainly showed up on a TV screen for them, and he might have had a Pimp Cane as well.

Yeah, that was their contact/handle. Got the patch and a cane in the pilot when the base he was in got shot up by the hijacked Airwolf.

Also had a secretary with smokin' hot legs so the pimp cane was justified.

/loved that show
