He was one of the most painted and etched celebrities of his day, and has a much higher reputation in Canada, seeing as he was a canny and effective ally for both the French and the British. He had some successes and some failures to be sure, and he seemed to like the rewards and distinctions showered on him by the British and later the Americans, which did not increase his status with rivals or enemies, but all in all he worked to protect the Six Nations and to ensure them land where they could be reasonably free from both British and American domination by dancing a tightrope of politics that was a fit subject for a classical tragedy.

A statue of him stands in Ottawa, Ontario, among the 14 "Valiants" of Canadian history along with Frontenac, d'Iberville, Laura Secord, etc.:

Canadians, like the British and the French, admire a valiant underdog and some of our "heroes" are men like Joseph Brant or Louis Riel, who would be villified in other countries with less complicated and more jingoist relationships to victory, defeat, glory, and freedom.

He wasn't a "terrorist". He was a Freedom Fighter, trying to make room for his people between the Old and the New Imperial Powers.

And he wasn't a Monster, he was a "celebrity".

Yeah, we know, he's red.

His sister, Molly Brant, was the real power in the family. The Iroquois were not only matrilinear but they were formed a Council of Old Women who had tremendous political influence except in the actual fighting of wars. It was the matrons of the six nations who decided to divide the people between the British and the American lands, thus hedging against future political disasters, but this cautious hedging was very close to what Joseph Brant and Molly Brant were attempting. They knew what resources they had to save their people, and what they didn't have and thus couldn't bring to bear on their aims, and they did their best to cut their coats according to their cloth.

As Wikipedia notes: "He was named Thayendanegea, which in the Mohawk language can mean "two wagers (sticks) bound together for strength", or possibly "he who places two bets."

It would take a great tragic poet to do justice to Joseph and Molly Brant's tumultuous lives and times. In the end, though, the Six Nations, the former Iroquois Confederacy, (they were formerly seven, but the Mohicans, as you know, do not survive as a nation today) survived against all odds and all comers in both Canada and the United States with many of them still making a reputation in war and in peace.
