Andy played pretty well today, but for the last 3 sets Roger was in one of his Greatest Of All Time moods. On grass, no-one can live him when that mood takes him.

Allez Roger! Murray is such a charmless, overrated jerk. Great to see Fed back at number 1!

yah, it's a better headline than mine. *tennis clap*

Great match. I have now greater respect for Andy Murray, and now believe he will win a major. He played a great match, served better than Federer, and ultimately I think it went down to experience and the key points. And Federer... some sublime volleying today. I thought the old man was done, but he has to come out and do it. Simply amazing.

Poor Sampras. All his claims to fame are tied or broken by Fed. Last remaining bastion is six year-end #1 rankings... and that one could be gone this year. Unlikely, but possible.

Ah, yes, how will Pete Sampras handle it. Woe is him, his life must totes suck. Nobody will remember him, and he'll forever be considered the tennis equivalent to Patrick McEnroe.

Nah, he'll sleep fine with his cash and his trophy wife. But it sure must be at least an annoyance to retire regarded as the greatest of open era, if not greatest ever, see it fall down in less than 10 years, and then see even more nails driven through every record that was "his" in just a decade.

I bet Federer has a personality, but he's always trying to be the quiet, unassuming guy. He could probably be rather interesting or intelligent if you sat down with him.

Sampras, on the other hand, is probably EXACTLY the same way he comes across in interviews. He almost reminded me of a tennis robot.

On the other hand, though, American tennis is dead, and he may be remembered as the last great champion of it.

Be happy to. Murray is dull and disconnected in interviews. Called his coach a twat during a match (because he was losing). Pulled out of the Davis cup, which his brother was playing in, without the courtesy of doing it directly. Not to mention all his on court immaturity: slamming rackets, throwing things down, etc. He and his game have no maturity.

On the other hand, Roger can be arrogant but given he's the best all around tennis player in men's history, I'll forgive it.

Roger had me worried in the first set. Glad to see he rallied and won number seven. He is just the best, and I will be happy to see Pete's records broken by such an amazing player.

Even so, I admit I teared up watching Andy's speech at the end. I actually felt bad for him for a few seconds there.

I haven't heard many Murray interviews, I just don't like the way he grabs his back, knee, crotch, or whatever, every time he's down big. And the grimace.
I don't like his scrunchy losing face.

We did get that one match at Wimbledon... Sampras was the defending champion but no longer in his prime, and Federer had yet to come into his prime... still, a very entertaining match.

Well Murray finally showed up to a final in a major. He's making legitimate progress, so hopefully Lendl wants to stay on board and they want him to. Honestly, Federer was simply too good, so Murray shouldn't be ashamed of anything, other than squandering a few chances in the second set.

Murray has the ability, but I just don't see how he can win a major, based on the ages of Djokovic and Nadal.

/Federer is still nasty

Murray can beat Djokovic and Nadal. He has to A) believe in himself and B) play like he did in the first set today, with more authority and aggression and less junkball, which he overuses.

I agree completely. The problem is that Djokovic and Nadal are so consistent, both physically and mentally, that which Andy lacks. This comes into play especially in a best of 5 set match.

We've seen stretches where Murray is aggressive and confident, and he looks unbeatable, but you never see him keep it up for a whole match against the top 3 when it counts. Honestly, Murray should have won against Djokovic in the Australian Open, but his mental lapses cost him the match.

Claka: As an Englishman all I can say is, Good Job Roger!

I see what you did there.

There has been a history of bigotry and nationalism among Scottish sports fans when it comes to the England football team. But, in some ways, it's deserved. Every time a major football tournament comes round, we all have to listen to how it's going to be 1966 all over again, then England crash out on penalties.

We are exposed to English commentators with a clear bias. Do you think Welbeck intended to score that goal that deflected off his heel? I don't. But the English commentary team were convinced that it was the work of a genius.

Personally? I wanted England to do well in the Euros (against all expectations of my friends and family, I should add; many of them had the ABE mentality). Roy is a good guy, and I hope he can get a good team together for 2014. Scotland's best hope is qualifying for major tournaments. If England can win one, with a well-disciplined team and a good manager, I have no qualms in supporting England.

Just please shut the farking fark up about 19 farking 60 farking 6.

This.

Not only does ESPN screw up my 'Breakfast with Wimbledon' by putting the match on cable, but then they show a replay on ABC in the afternoon. And have their studio commentators spoil the outcome as they chat coming in and out of commercial breaks.

It's not just 6 year end #1 rankings. It's 6 CONSECUTIVE year end #1 rankings. That one won't be falling for awhile. Federer's 23 consecutive Slam SFs is a more impressive record, though, IMO.

Oh yeah, that one ("in a row") ain't falling, not to anyone from this generation. But Federer could, with a little luck, tie six YE#1s, though his would be non-consecutive.
