I still laugh about the time he predicted that God would send his wrath in the form of a hurricane to Orlando, to punish them for displaying gay pride flags, and it instead plowed into a Promise-keeper's rally in his home state.

So we stop hurricanes and then all of the sudden the Everglades dies. Pretty much every natural weather event has a benefit as far as the environment is concerned. We learn things like this when we find out that wildfires is what makes certain cones release their seeds and clears out diseased trees after restricting them for so long and wondering why the forest is not sprouting new trees or why the bark beetle is so rampant. So, yea, let's try not to play mother nature and instead either deal with it or not live there.

I remember reading a short story while waiting to take my SATs years ago. On a distant world, human scientists were trying stop hurricanes. They had to use four 100MT nukes to kill a hurricane by breaching the eyewall. Once the central column of warm air was no longer going up, the hurricane fell apart in a matter of hours.

Not to sound all Luddite and everything... I know that hurricanes are destructive and inconvienent and all that, but they are part of the climate. Making them go away would have consequences. Does anyone think past step 3?

Any solution would disrupt the Gulf Stream. The only practical solution would be to improve our detection and warning systems and improve our coastal infrastructure to withstand the strongest of hurricanes. But that would never work because people will still ignore the warnings, and it would be rather expensive to improve coastal infrastructure.

I seem to remember reading one time that prior to the first nuclear explosion that they did for the Manhattan project, there was a small but vocal group of scientists that were convinced that the explosion would rip a hole in the atmosphere and allow all the worlds air to escape (or some such thing).
Obviously they were wrong.
But who gets to decide?
Scientists start messing with these natural systems and who knows what unintended consequences there may be?
Its not like there haven't been other cases where great ideas went out of control;
Lets introduce rabbits to Australia for food! Hey this kudzu makes great ground cover! Hey we need more honey, African bees make Great honey!

Any change you make to climate in one spot is going to affect some other spot, so these strategies will forever be tied up in the U.N. and international courts. Hell, it could even be considered a declaration of war to modify someone else's climate. Look how hard it is to get all nations to agree to global warming protocols.
