I think del Toro is a really good director - like headed towards Hitchcock good - and wish he made more movies and of more variety.

Never even heard of this, but it has my attention fully. I am sure whatever Dagon-like monster he creates will be in the same wheelhouse as Lovecraft's book of nightmares.

Interestingly, according to the wiki page for Rim, Tom Cruise was supposed to star in del Toro's At The Mountains of Madness.

But after every time the Hangoverians are vanquished, the pilots will swear again and again that it is for the last time. No, I'm totally serious this time, guys. Never doing this again.

Considering that the movie would have dealt heavily with the main character's derangement after exposure to otherworldly secrets humans were not meant to know, I call it appropriate casting and method acting.

douchebag/hater: I think del Toro is a really good director - like headed towards Hitchcock good - and wish he made more movies and of more variety.

Talented, yes, but as detailed in a New Yorker article last year, he makes so few films because he looks for every excuse to claim that the studios are compromising his vision and then quit the film. He has a martyrs complex. Her seriously needs to get over himself and figure out how to work within the system, or make movies with smaller budgets.

Part of Hitchcock's genius was that he was a very efficient filmmaker which helped him evade entanglements with the studio.

That's what I'm saying. I never heard of this project at all before today, and if it was any other director I would say "yeah, well, I remember how the "new" Godzilla turned out and I'm not biting again." But del Toro has a hell of a tract record. And the "lol all he does is put eyes in places he shouldn't" critics aside, the man knows how to design a convincing monster.

And unlike a lot of directors, he does most of his stuff old-school with makeup, animatronics, and prosthetics. Half the creatures in the Hellboy flicks would not have been nearly as cool if he had simply CGed them, like a lesser director would.

www.wired.com

This guy, for instance, kicked ass. And while some of his stuff was CG work, it wasn't done to the point that it stuck out.

I'm sure he will come up with some Cthulhu-esque giant monster to fight, and it will be probably as close as we'll ever get to seeing a decent, modern version of Lovecraft myth come to life.

Del Toro's problem is that with his imagination, he needs backing to fill out his vision. As an accomplished filmmaker, he doesn't have the luxury of doing films as if he were in the middle of the fledgling days of Industrial Light and Magic. Which is really a shame. Because I think if he were to settle down and maybe write a few movies that didn't rely on that sort of thing too much (see The Devil's Backbone), he could do something special. I think, though, that he's at a point where he doesn't want to settle for simplified stories, and maybe thinks he has the clout not to roll over anytime someone asks him to.

That in mind, he's quite the drama queen (and IMO, he's a little limited, and frankly, not nearly the storyteller Hitchcock is - and I say this as a Del Toro fan), but at least when TV studios tried to make him compromise his vision, he said "fark you, I'm going a different route" and wrote a novel instead. Never read it, I just like the gesture.
