If you're referring to early Sandler movies, shut your whore mouth. Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, etc. were awesome.

If you're referring to crap like the one he plays his sister, carry on.

Also... nice work yankees. I thought y'all were supposed to be all green and energy efficient n shiat.

Adam Sandler comedy? I am unfamiliar with that combination of words. Is that like military intelligence or jumbo shrimp?

Why is overconsumption of coal a good thing?

Well no shiat. No one lives in the interior of Africa or the middle of South America. Look at the western US, its pretty similar. Also I bet the night sky in Africa is beautiful.

There are no Third World countries, nor any First or Second World countries, since 1991.

That is all.

We're so evil for wanting to use power to power....stuff!

It's probably all the electrical outlets used by hipsters driving their Nissan Leaf or Volt, right?

Even I enjoy pissing off someone when it comes explaining energy consumption...but come on, can't we find something better than the fact we need energy at night? THIS is what we've come down to complaining about?

Fun fact of the day: There is only 1 currently recycled product we turn in on a daily basis that not only makes money, but saves energy. The other 96% cost more money, and use more energy to recycle (but they sure do make us feel good about doing jack shiat to help the planet).

Aluminum.

At least National Geographic put some context behind similar images a decade ago. And their photos were better. More details (fires, fishing lights, natural gas burn-offs). And you could trust them not to blot of large swaths of continent in order to make more contrast, which I wouldn't put past The Daily Mail.

I can't vouch for Africa, but I've been to some very remote and blacked out bases in Iraq and Afghanistan. Stellarium and I became friends during my last little jaunt and I learned more about the night sky there than I ever did while in the U.S.
Here, going to where you can see any decent amount of stars is a two-hour drive. It's quite sad, actually.

Yeah, I was annoyed by TFA's logic that because we're using it, we MUST be "wasting". Well I'm not sure why moving our streetlights to the African interior would be fixing the "waste". By what measure exactly are you judging when something is wasted? We use it to keep out economy going. We light the highways so people can drive safely at night, and consequently make more money and increase the tax base. Lighting dirt roads in Africa ain't gonna make anyone a dime.

So per-sq-ft consumption seems to be the de facto criteria for wastage here. But the author didn't SAY that, because calling density of consumption a vice sounds stupid. Because it is.

Tell you what. This map of "light pollution" shows me that the innovative, RICH, smart, intelligent countries have evolved to the point that they will not live in the dark, live in object poverty, live suffering the pain of heat or cold.
I wish these "scientist" would STFU and leave the rest of us alone!
These "rich" countries were not always rich. We innovated, produced, evolved to the point we don't have to use whale oil to light the night, we don't starve because we figured out how to produce safe food to eat, medicines to heal the sick. Everyone points fingers at the USA as "the evil" in the world. Well, how about the next time there is a natural disaster, some tin-horn dictator invades your country, we just sit it out and let you figure out how to fix it. Every time there is something happening in the world, most of the time the U.N. (useless nations) will come calling to Uncle Sam's piggy bank. Well, I say that we just say fix it yourself. People in the USA are about fed up with "saving the world" (WW1, WW2), and then getting spit upon.

It wouldn't. I think the thrust of TFA is that we should make everywhere dark, not light up anyone else. It's the "spread the virtue" theory, and by "virtue" I mean "misery".

0/10. Way too obvious. If you're going to be a decent troll you need to learn a little thing called "subtlety". This is Fark, you know, not some crappy little news link site. We have standards here.

So, being able to see at night is now "energy waste" ? Okay then.

2012-07-08 12:58:51 PM
But it does raise an interesting question on WHY we feel afraid of the dark. So much so that we will waste gazillions on lighting up empty streets and highways all night long.

In the city, headlights on autos are redundant.

Dark sky doesn't matter when there is a full moon, why I moved my vacation week at Death Valley from around the 4th back 2 weeks into June. Alone 2 nights at the cool, higher-altitude campground, ain't saying which one, except for the ravens and rabbits.

2012-07-08 01:14:47 PM
But as these stunning images from space show, we in the West are guilty of wasting energy and polluting light on a staggering scale.

Damn, all out of farks to give.

So, instead, I'm going to leave my stereo cranked, and my computer and big screen T.V. running while I make a food / beer run in my air conditioned car. Maybe I'll find a fark to give along the way, but I doubt it.

So, you're okay with lots and lots of energy just so long as it's green? So am I.

Ten Bits Ranch, Running Y Ranch, Babcock Ranch, SunTanks, La Vina Ranch, etc.

And my fav ... Beaulieu Residence

The Third World is not being victimized by our electrical generating capacity. They're being victimized by their inability to get with the program and evolve into societies which can produce and innovate. Like basic civic sanitation. Basic communications and roads. Curing transmittable diseases. And most importantly, not looking to the West for money hand outs and help. That dependency alone hamstrings them as much as anything could.

Lol no they aren't. If you drove down a major metro street and no-onw had head lights on, you'd be shocked at the accident rate.

It's absolutely stunning. I grew up in rural Alabama so I thought I knew what an sky untouched by light pollution looked like but I was wrong. Go to Africa, climb up a mountain to be above much of the atmospheric haze and go outside before moonrise and your mouth will just hit the ground. You'll understand why the Milky Way got its name and I'm not talking about the candy bar.

/Coca-Cola also tastes better in Africa.
