Because the two countries that we've been complaining about in recent years are the same two countries who spend a lot of their time telling everyone they're going to destroy other countries if they get nukes? Not "use for defense," not "as a deterrent," but "if we had the resources, we'd erase those people from existence."

If Iran would stop telling everyone that they were going to destroy Israel, and developing missiles that have just enough design range and payload hit that country, they might get a little bit more slack.

If North Korea didn't have thousands of artillery pieces pointed at the capital of South Korea, with continuous threats about raining fire on the civilian population... well, they'd still be crazy, and nobody would trust them with nukes in any situation.

Not confident you are going to read this, but it doesn't get any easier than Google and/or Wiki.WTF?

Actually, it's because NZ doesn't allow any Nuclear powered vessels in their territorial waters, which annoys the Americans as NZ is a supply base the Antarctic missions etc. Happened in the 80s when I was a kid.

History is your friend.
NPT.

/and assuming you are referring to Iran, everyone else is also concerned with their possible/maybe pursuit of nuclear weapons
//and this article, being about New Zealand, has little to do with nuclear weapons
///they prohibit ships powered by nuclear, not just carrying nuclear weapons
\US policy of "neither confirm nor deny" also ties into this

did you ever think that maybe, just maybe what the media reports those countries as saying is not really 100% accurate, but is part of the sort of propaganda we accuse "the other guys" of doing? And even if it was accurate, we have both of those countries surrounded by military bases and active duty troops ready to blow them away, so maybe their comments are somewhat justified given the already threatening stance we've taken.

This isn't about nuclear weapons it is about nuclear power and NZ not wanting it in their waters. You can probably get a calm, rational answer in the Politics forum for the weapons question.

You may be.

The ultimate goal is to get rid of nuclear weapons. The problem with this is that at the very last step, every nation involved will have the chance to, by reneging on the deal, become the world's only nuclear power. That step cannot possibly be accomplished until every nation can be trusted to realize this and destroy their last nukes anyway, and as things currently stand, there is frankly no nation deserving of that trust. The end result is that things have to be done slowly, so that when a nation reneges (as they all have from time to time), the balance is not disrupted too seriously.

When other nations get nukes, this does not help matters. That goes quadruple for nations that cannot be trusted not to use them at first opportunity. Iran's "Our nuclear DEATHTOISRAEL ambitions are strictly PUSHTHEMINTOTHESEA for peaceful DENYTHEHOLOCAUST purposes" program most certainly cannot be trusted, and North Korea doesn't even try to hide its nuclear lust for its neighbors to the south and east.

The situation is imperfect, but this is, sadly, the best possible option: keep the weapons from spreading while slowly drawing them down.

The NPT, of which Iran is a signatory, has a specific mechanism by which to back out.
If Iran wishes to pursue nuclear weapon research, let them back out officially. Let them proclaim, publicly, that this is what they are doing.

Or are you suggesting that a country should not be bound by internationally recognized treaties that were agreed to and signed by a previous administration?
