I've made it a bit of a habit to travel around the state a little bit recently and check out some of the historical societies. A lot of them do a really good job with up-keeping historical houses and converting them to museums. The one I went to yesterday, in Clermont, has a split focus on how life was for those who lived in Florida before the citrus boom, and life for those after, when money started coming into the state.

I know I can be sentimental because it's my home state, but Florida really has one of the more interesting state histories around, I think.

It wasn't that "Northerners" in general ruined Florida... it was specifically the stupid ones. they joined the stupid that was already there. Florida attracts stupid.

The Keys have a boatload of history, from cigar factories to the start of the Spanish-American War.

I wonder if fire ants had made it to Florida by the time the earlier photos were taken. They make the fun quotient drop dramatically.

There are two groups that move to Florida: those from the economically powerful North East, where even the stupidest residents can make enough money to retire early and move to Florida, and criminal types looking for opportunities or just fleeing their past.

It was still humid, but the old cracker houses allowed for plenty of ventilation.

Florida really does have a fascinating history. It's one of those states that was always kind of in the middle of events, but protected its obscurity, too. I feel lucky to have had a chance to spend three decades there, and in a number of different places in the state, too. I've lived in Pensacola, Miami, Jacksonville, Palm Beach, Orlando, Tallahassee...each mini-region has a different feel, and reflects the history of the development of the state in different ways.

Added to the fact that much of it is very beautiful. I feel sorry for those who only ever saw Disney World or their gated/retirement hives, or the bases and surrounding dumpy areas.

Another fun thing to do, if you're interested in Florida's tourism history, is check out the state's old tourist motels and roadside attractions.

It's a vanishing world.
