Or as people in Phoenix call it, Tuesday.

I was riding a motorcycle in Vegas one summer and sank into the asphalt on LV Blvd at a stoplight. It was weird riding up & out of the divots (and my boots stuck to the asphalt, I thought they were going to come off when I picked my feet up)

I'm going to go ahead and predict this is the summer that climate change finally becomes a real concern for Republicans and less of a political issue. You can get away with ignoring it for one year. Two years in a row and it becomes a pattern, and Republicans love patterns.

However, as a conservative, this will not play out with a push for electric cars. It's going to play out in a push for natural gas fracking and nuclear power plants.

Last year, in the midwest, we had a very mild summer. I don't think it hit 100 once (Chicago-area). Hell, I don't think it hit 95 once. We had a lot of rain...a *LOT* of rain.

This year it is a very brutal summer. Little to no rain. High 90s hitting the 100 range multiple days in a row. And freakish wind storms that knocked out power to 40k people.

But at least 750 people didn't die...unlike the summer of 95 (numbers may have been...Chicago'ed just to prove a point/pass legislation)

Actually reddit should just be named repeat.com. All people do is repeat the same links over and over again. Between that, mods who are power tripping all the time, kharma whores, and a majority of users who are very young and immature I don't know why people even want to go there. It makes fark seem like Harvard compared to the level of intelligence you will battle over there.

England is having the coldest, wettest summer on record.

As is the usual trend: When its abnormally hot one place, its abnormally cold another place, when there's no rain one place, there's more rain in another place.

Said "old little plane regional jet" has a maximum takeoff weight of 53,000lbs.

If that's the "commuter world" ramp at DCA (I'm sure it is), that asphalt is notoriously soft and IIRC there used to be concrete pads in most of the parking spots for main landing gear to sit on.

/used to fly for Air Wisconsin, the airline that operates that plane

Except that they're breaking all-time heat records across the US. ALL-TIME heat records.

Colorado's burning, Russia's flooding, the US Midwest is cooking (30 dead), violent thunderstorms knocked out power to hundreds of thousands, and we've already had more named weather systems in HISTORY this early.

One can only hope that if there's divine justice, the first people to be wiped out by the changes are idiots who deny there's anyrthing going on.

Yes, and every time there is snow in Russia or Canada during the winter, it's irrefutable proof that climate change isn't happening. We know.

If you care about the environment, and choose to be the slightest bit realistic, you'd certainly hope so.

More nuclear power plants would certainly help. An intelligent strategy would pursue having nuclear power plants entirely take over the role of bulk/baseload power generation in parts of the country where coal or natural gas fills that role.

Natural gas itself isn't ideal, but it's far better than coal, far better than oil. Domestic, on-shore natural gas drilling is a far better alternative than drilling for oil in deep water, or buying it from halfway across the globe.

Freed from its use in baseload power generation by nuclear, natural gas can do other things for us:

Natural gas will serve a role as highly variable, highly reliable generation source to pair with wind and solar.

In the form of LNG and CNG it can be utilized in transportation, both in personal vehicles and in trains and trucking. We have enough to largely displace gasoline and diesel, both of which produce more pollution, are more expensive to extract (as crude), more expensive (and dirty) to refine, we will be better off economically and environmentally, and geopolitically.

// and of course heating our homes, cooking our food, hot water... those are nice...

It's unsurprising that people died in heat waves a lot back then, given the absence of widespread air conditioning and refrigeration (food-borne illness). But please point to the "natural cycle" occurring over the last 100 years:

It certainly does, but it does have several advantages over coal, including:
1) More chemical energy released per ton of carbon dioxide produced.
2) Combined-cycle natural gas plants are much more efficient than coal plants, converting up to ~60% of that energy into useful work. Even new coal plants are lucky to get 35%.
3) The contaminants produced at the point of combustion are generally lower. Less sulfur, lead, arsenic, misc. metals, etc.

This isn't to say that natural gas (or its extraction process, which is god-awful just like coal mining) is clean. But it is cleaner than coal (or petroleum, which matters for a few power generation facilites, but mostly for newer buses and such).

(Of course, every energy technology besides a giant tire is cleaner than coal.)
