The tone of this article isn't interested, surprised or curious; it's just flat out disdainful. If I lived on a tropical island drinking beer and smoking pot all day, I guess I wouldn't really give a shiat about what statisticians and reporters said though.

CSB time: When I played with a band on Guam in the early 80s this guy brought a joint of some Palauan pot to the house.I had a couple of hours before the gig so I figured a hit or 2 would be fine.

I'd never, nor since then, had pot that strong.I was still stoned at 2 am.Good thing we were working 6 nights a week because I played on muscle memory alone,

I was absolutely Palaued.

If you're a US citizen, I imagine it would be fairly easy, seeing as they used to be a territory of the US. The official currency is US dollar and the official language is English. If you're really interested I would start at their tourism website, this page has contact info for immigration.

How is Italy #2 for smoking weed? Never would've thought that. I just clicked on the UN report. I question their methodology

it's not that I'm ever surprised to hear someone smokes (since a lot of people do...) just that I'm surprised Italians would be more open to admitting it than, say, the Dutch.

Just because you make something semi-legal, doesn't mean more people will start using it.

Also, looking at the Italian economy, they need something to make them forget, along with them being the #1 wine drinking country (last time i looked).

Technically, you're wrong. Pot doesn't suck - pot gets sucked. Preferably through a nice water bong nestled between two hot teen bisexual hotties that are willing to trade sex for drugs with a slightly plump middle aged man, such as myself.

Just a thought...

If you lived on a small island in the middle of nowhere, I suspect your consumption of mood altering substances would be fairly high as well, once you discovered the limits of entertainment in that location.

I've been to Palau and it has some of the best dive sites in the world. Blue Corner is unreal, but be careful of that tropical sun, it's very easy to get baked.

42% of all statistics are made up on the sPot.

Spent a year living on a very small Pacific island a decade ago. Wasn't much to do other than get drunk, get stoned, have sex & watch TV (and not necesarily in that order...)

/I slammed my door in the face of one guy who drunkenly showed up at my apartment one night & woke me up to see if I would have sex with him. I told him to go find his damn wife. Ugh.
//But yeah, baking on the beach is bliss!!

Been there. Any place where there is no concept of stress-related -anything- is a place to like. Unless you like getting things done in a hurry, then you would probably have a stroke. The diving is also farking awesome. So is farking while diving for that matter. Miss that place.

try it before you commit. island living isn't for everyone. or, you can split the difference and check out guam, where it is much more developed (and more expensive), but still pretty much 25 years behind hawaii.
i love it, many do, but about half the mainlanders get 'island fever' and go nuts and bail after a few months. they get too hooked on access to malls full of fashion crap, 500 channels (which you could get now anyway with a dish i suppose), big concerts, etc., and can't downshift into an lifestyle where 'formal' means no flip-flops and pants with legs. amazon still delivers, but it takes a week or two.
people who don't otherwise know who they are unless someone tells them feel culturally cut off if they don't get the latest fads spoonfed to them weekly. just habits are hard to break for some. for instance, we had some people freak out and pay to air freight christmas trees in because they couldn't break with habit. the rest of us just had a fiesta on the beach and ate roast boar wearing battery powered christmas lights on our hats.
there is boonie stomping, isolated swimming holes with waterfalls, diving, jungles, awesome sunsets, boating, fishing, the works - all the movie stuff is there, but the big city stuff isn't. the community you build and socialization takes over and you know all your neighbors. probably much the way small towns in alaska or something operate, too (only in a place you actually like living).

you would just have to check it out.

Google is your friend

A population of around 21,000 people spread out over 250 islands? I could stay for a year, Couchsurfing. Awesome.

There usually aren't enough tourists to some of those islands. I don't know how (or if) Palau has developed in the last decade though.

the costs can vary wildly, depending on what you want. imported items can be high. that box of fruit loops will be on the shelf in the grocery, but could cost you $10 since its flown in. chicken and pork can be cheap, but beef is not (or at least, iirc last I checked the nearest place with cows was Rota. they ain't tropical beasts). vegetables and fruits are plentiful, if they grow locally or regionally, but if you really need that asparagus or spinach or whatever, pay up. Milk is in the same gallon jugs as here, but its reconstituted from cargo containers full of powder by the local dairy (it tastes better than the stuff in a box you mix at home, but it still tastes different.). Same with the ice cream and stuff. Again, you can get the stuff flown in, if you really feel like paying through the nose for it. in short, you adapt the diet and do fine, or you pay for it.

rents aren't generally a problem, jobs are. making an income there is the important part; you work in an office right now, they likely don't have a need for what you do.
also, if you are retirement age and on a pension, getting access to specialized medical care can be iffy. basic hospital, no problem. prescriptions, no problem. need an mri? orthopedic surgery? burn unit? you are looking at being flown out for that.

Dear Fark,
Just met a Palauan girl yesterday.
Is mentioning these stats to her a good idea?

Well... okay, the ones you'd raise for meat aren't. Some other cows might argue the point, though.
