I know what you're getting at, but it seems like if a radio station plays Led Zeppelin, it's not the same 2 or 3 songs. Led Zeppelin seem to be one of the few bands that get album cuts consistently played.

I also agree that Man in the Box seems to get the most play, or at least it used to, haven't heard it in years myself. AiC had many good songs.

I don't know what #7 is on about, Mysterious Ways was a decent song, but if I had to pick an over played U2 song I'd say either Where The streets have no name or Still haven't found what I'm looking for would be top of that list.

REM had a lot of hits that got a lot of play, I don't think Loosing my religion was played any more than any other.

Sounds to me like whoever wrote this article needs to try out a few different radio stations, or maybe the town he lives in only has one classic rock station.

Why? Are they amazed that anyone was able to find even one of their songs likable enough to become a hit? I went and listened to all the links you gave as well as Come on Eileen so I could refresh my memory since I didn't really remember the song all that well, and it they all sucked giant sweaty hairy donkey cock. And the thing is, I can't explain it. I really can't tell you why I found all of those songs to be so shiatty but they all grated my nerves.

I don't know what radio station the author listens to but we get more than enough Pink Floyd, U2, R.E.M. and Elton John around here. And to say Black Sabbath has "remained relevant without ever leaving it's early 70's radio friendly fare". What does that even mean? And if you're going to bring up Black Sabbath, why not mention Deep Purple, or Led Zeppelin, or Metallica. I'm sure you could make all of those bands fit this ill-conceived and poorly executed sketch of an idea of an article.

Having been a bouncer in one in college and coming to the tail end of the era where all my friends are getting married (and having bachelor parties) I would argue that whatever song it is getting overplayed in strip clubs is, it's probably hip-hop.

Really depends on the area you're in and as well as the club itself and the girls dancing if they get the choice of music. When I was stationed in Texas one of the places I'd go had girls that would choose mostly rock type music with a little bit of hip hop thrown in. Around where I live now it's pretty varied, but I'd say about 1/2 of the girls choose rock to dance to.

What always gets me is the number of girls dancing to Rage Against the Machine.

I remember years ago when I worked in radio sometimes I would go to the focus groups where they would pick some of the music played. My god the people that would show up to this pretty much picked the same awful stuff over and over. They would play 30 seconds of a song and they would press a button or turn a dial. They would play a great song I havent heard in years and the levels would just kinda meh. Then they would play Hotel California and it would go through the roof. Should have stocked those tests with farkers probably woulda got some decent music. Stupid Clear Channel.

The "classic rock" station that is the only music source allowed at one of the warehouses one of my jobs often requires me to spend many many hours in oddly plays Skateaway about six times per each 8 hour shift. They also play Money For Nothing (with that verse included) about 4 times every 8 hours.So far those are the only two D.S. songs I've heard them air.

When I was in college one of the two good (as in non-top 40 only) radios stations played Tom Sawyer or Spirit Of Radio not just once a day but at least 3 times a day. I farking hate those songs now.

Does anyone in the industry know why this is? I mean, I assume radio stations pay licensing fees for each broadcast of a song. Is it cheaper to play one song twenty times rather than twenty songs one time each?

I hardly ever listen to the radio and even so there are dozens of songs that I'm so sick of they make me want to claw my face off.

I didn't say (nor think) that "Rock Lobster" wasn't stupid; it is. I only said that it was better than "Love Shack", which it is.

I was not a fan of Soft Cell. Again, my point wasn't that "Sex Dwarf" was a masterpiece; just that it was better than that annoying "Tainted Love".
