I hate those goddamn things. I once lived with a roommate who was dating a woman who had a four year old girl. The girl left her toy in the hallway one night. Around 2:00 am, I went from my bedroom to the kitchen to get a snack. That damn thing heard me somehow, opened its eyes, and started gabbling at me. I nearly drop-kicked it out the back door.

Beanie Babies are pretty benign. I'm not a collector -- I have no qualms about taking off their tags -- but I have a few. They have yet to kill me. It is of the Beanie Boos that we should be suspicious:

Furby is nothing compared to Hasbro FurReal Friends. Like Squakers McCaw. He's pretty advanced, I gotta say.

kittycatvideos.com

The FurReal line is populated with a bunch of kitties and dogs with some fairly advanced animatronics that are incidentally creepy as hell.

Sure, there's robo-punk dogs like the Aibo, but the Uncanny Valley kill-it-with-fire creepiness of the lifelike ones is far more fun, IMHO.

Biscuit, the robot dog, is pretty convincing. He's fooled more than one passer-by into initially thinking he was real. Well you don't have to look too hard to tell he's animatronic, but the effect benefits from Occam's Razor- you see a dog-shaped thing moving, you initially assume it's a dog, not a robot.

I actually own a jet-black furby. Back when they were the "it" toy du jour a manager at my erstwhile employer was flipping furbys on eBay, so when I pulled an all-nighter and saved a client from their stupidity they gave me a furby instead of the usual thank-you-for-saving-our-butts fruit basket or gift certificate.

As soon as I saw what it was I looked up how to hack furbies online. It turns out that the PROM and controller are potted units that don't allow for easy modification... So much for my idea of an Exorcist Furby or Tourette's Furby.

It'd still be in the original packaging if a G/F hadn't discovered it while helping me move and started playing with it. It'd probably be worth a lot of money to the obsessive sorts who collect Star Wars and My Pretty Pony collectables.

And yes, those things are disturbing.

Furbies are back because you haven't killed all the Sodomites. There America, I said it. And don't let your boys play with the boy Furbies, or girls the girls, or you're risking a hurricane - and MAYBE a METEOR.

My daughter has a poodle robot thing that GROWS. Periodically, it has to be reset back to small again. Freaky thing looks mostly real.
Never had a problem with the furbies though.

My daughter had a couple Furbies way back. One day I hear her screaming in her room. One of them was talking all this really crazy (more than normal) nonsense and one eye stuck shut. The batteries had leaked and it was going all haywire. I couldn't get the batteries out so I beat it to death with a 9 iron. It scared her so bad she had me throw both of them away at the same time.

Those toys bother me. They're teaching kids to equate pets with toys and see living creatures as something you can just get rid of if you're tired of it. It also makes kids not realize that pets are work. Living animals need to be fed, walked, and cleaned up after. Living animals get sick and need to be taken to the vet. They need to be spayed/neutered and have all their shots. A toy doesn't. It worries me that kids will play woth the toys, then want a real pet and not realize there are a lot of things that a living pet requires that a toy does not, and the animal will suffer for it.
