Um, I've actually been there. (extended family bla bla)

But it's just a few miles away from there is the Pyramid of North Dakota (link via boingboing), a Cold War missile defense. An uncle of mine worked there.

Still one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

The town sprang up in 1912 as the Soo Line Railroad made its way through North Dakota. The name Whitman came from the railroad's civil engineer some distant egomaniac, E.A. Whitman, who planned the tracks and towns.

According to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_County,_North_Dakota, the population was of 3,126 in 2010.

Was there some kind of disaster or is this another Nelson County?

There are other towns in the county. The county seat is Lakota, population 672.

/Whitman is listed as an unincorporated community

Oh, thanks. English is not my first language and I thought county = town. I thought Whitman was another town/county where the article came from since a 2 person city would not have their own media.

The article is from the Fargo Moorhead media corp. known as "the forum". Serving the areas appx 160,000 people liberal garbage on the daily.

I have one quibble with the headline: should this really be considered "ultrafark?"

I think this is simply a regular Fark-level not-news story.

there are official numbers for definitions of town, city, blah blah blah blah
but they overlap and who cares. silly demographers

Micropolitan Statistical Area is one of my favorites. Only tiny people are allowed to live there.

You beat me to it, I live near there but I think the state made the residents leave the area from what I heard.

You are correct, the state took all the property but I think there might still be a few holdouts.

I thought so. I remember reading an article like this. This is one of the biggest things to see in the Coal Region but its just an empty field, now it is truly a ghost town to me.
