Plenty of great guns lack safeties. The key to not shooting yourself is a good holster and keeping your finger off the trigger, plus not trying to catch a dropped gun.

To be fair, I never said anything about great guns. I wouldn't expect a guy who acted the way that dude acted to have a great gun. I assumed it was a glock.

Indeed.

No matter how sexy it looks on TV, dummies, don't just stick the gun in your waistband and say "Tally-ho!" Guy's lucky he didn't shoot his balls off in the process.

Bangers don't wear holsters. It interferes with their street cred. Just like they're too hardcore to hold the gun upright.

That is the precise reason I recommend waistband carry to all the dummies I know. Guy's lucky, but society isn't.

I have a dropped gun down the pants leg from when I was working as a police detective in L.A. I was in my apartment after work when this girl knocks on my door. I invite her in and over the course of the next few minutes I proceed to drop my gun down my pants leg and spill Schlitz all over her. Long story short, she was a prostitute hired by this hot shot lawyer I was investigating for murder. I ended up busting her for a roach and she rear ended my parked car and wrote a nasty note on my windshield in lipstick.

This was in NJ, one of the worst anti-gun States in the Union. Being within earshot of a gun generally warrants arrest there.

That only applies if a round is in the chamber and the hammer is NOT cocked.

I dropped my cocked and locked 45 right onto the hammer and it didn't go off. Scared the shiat out of me but didn't go off.

Never saw a wheelgun with a safety.

Well, some of them have a keyed interlock that stops all firing, but thats more of a childproofing thing than an actual use-while-carrying safety

What an idiot. All modern firearms have drop-safeties, you should never try to catch one. And if you're that worried about scratching the finish then you shouldn't be carrying it in the first place.

/this is why my range has a "no drawing from the holster" rule

All of the revolvers made at present have a transfer bar which prevents the hammer from hitting the firing pin unless the trigger is actually pulled. Older guns usually had a quarter-cocked hammer position which would prevent the firing pin from being struck in the event of a drop unless the sear was badly worn, but you had to remember to engage it.

I wear a fanny pack holster at most times and a Smartcarry holster upon occasions when a fanny pack is actually inappropriate, rather than just a fashion mistake.

Safeties are for pussies and slow critical reaction time when used. Get a holster and or handle a pistol like a dangerous weapon.

True, but I would also say the need for a safety depends on the guns design.
I have a CZ with no safety, but the trigger has a long and heavy pull when its decocked. This is similar to most revolvers, So I've never feared for it going off accidentally.
The glock on the other hand has a long but very soft trigger and no safety ,,,at least in my book. That on trigger safety is a retarded idea. I think that's the secret behind why glocks seem to be at the center of many accidents.
Trigger safety paired with backstrap safety (like on the XD) is far superior, but a single action or striker fire would be better off with a manual safety since the gun is half or fully cocked when carried.

/If you carry a gun you MUST practice with it.
/If you practice, manipulating the controls becomes second nature.
/Safety shouldn't obstruct proper use unless the gun is poorly designed.

Depends on the era of 1911.

The true M1911A1 design doesn't have a firing pin safety. It's just a free-floating rod like on an AR-15. Given enough velocity the gun WILL fire when dropped on its muzzle regardless of where the hammer or safety is.

The only number I've ever heard is a 27 foot drop onto concrete, muzzle down, will do this.

So, not a very likely scenario but that's part of the reason firing pin safeties are now standard. Colt made the change with the Series 80 line. The Series 70 line and before didn't have them.
