Eeeewww! Girl germs!

In before all of the people from the lifeguard thread.

// hi folks :D

2012-07-06 08:20:55 PM
Yep, The Rules always trump Doing The Right Thing, because Rules Are Rules. Until the lawyers get done with them, that is.

2012-07-06 08:21:25 PM
This is good protocol and they both could have died from asphyxiation

SnakeLee: This is good protocol and they both could have died from asphyxiation

Or the department could be paying his life-long medical bills from pulmonary-burn induced chronic lung disease.

2012-07-06 08:22:37 PM
Eh, it's a calculated risk. If he didn't give her the air mask, she might have collapsed before getting out. If he did, they probably both could have died. He opted for option A for one reason or another.

2012-07-06 08:22:39 PM
Heroic firefighter should have known better.

2012-07-06 08:22:46 PM
Zero tolerance = Zero brain cells.

2012-07-06 08:23:05 PM
Well that seems to be all the relevant information we need to come to a conclusion.

2012-07-06 08:23:09 PM
I have to admit, that was stupidly heroic.

2012-07-06 08:25:07 PM
told him that removing his air mask was not 'a smart move.'

Probably true. Had he lost consciousness or was otherwise disabled by combustion gasses, they BOTH would have died. This is why they tell you on airplanes to put on your own oxygen mask before you put on your child's. You won't be able to help your child if you are unconscious or dead.

He removed his mask in an IDLH environment. If the department didn't investigate or - atleast on paper - look like they were making an effort to investigate, the unions and OSHA would have a field day with it.

2012-07-06 08:26:04 PM
not a smart move. the policy is there for a good reason. if this has made you mad then the daily mail has trolled you and you're dumb.

2012-07-06 08:26:49 PM
Those who risk their lives saving others dont deserve to make judgment calls about how they do it, apparently

Maybe the next fire will involve the guy who wrote the rules and the firefighter can drag his sorry dead ass out of the burning building

He knows his ability and what he can do. The man made a gut call and that is what has been asked throughout history of these types. Tying it down with lawyers and politicians takes away the greatness of these individuals and their ability to do the job.

Fluorescent Testicle: Zero tolerance = Zero brain cells.

Exactly.

2012-07-06 08:30:09 PM
As a reward for his bravery and selflessness, she should give him a blowjob.

2012-07-06 08:30:18 PM
From the Daily Mail with pictures sourced from Faux news. Of course there's going to be an investigation when someone doesn't follow protocol. Call me when they fire or otherwise take punitive actions against him.

2012-07-06 08:31:28 PM
Is "air mask" a euphemism?

2012-07-06 08:31:43 PM
Hero is just another word for dumbass!

/Keep your mask on!

One of the first things you're taught when operating in an SCBA in a fire is that you're going to be sucking down a lot more oxygen than you normally would. You're working hard, wearing 50lbs of non-breathable bunker gear in addition to a 15-30lb air pack, and working in a high heat environment.

In addition, that air is full of combustion byproducts - carbon monoxide, cyanide, PTFN, superheated gas, carcinogens, and particulate matter.

All it takes is one breath, and you're down for the count.

2012-07-06 08:33:00 PM
This isn't the same thing as the lifeguard story.

If something had happened and it took longer than he thought to exit the building, a huge possibility in a fire, he could have passed out from breathing in some of the smoke. Then who'd get them out? The woman who was in even worse shape? Either that, or another firefighter would have to come in and save both their asses.

I am sick and tired of all these firefighters making judgement calls based on years of experience under trying conditions to save the lives of the people in their district. This kind of garbage needs to stop NOW. We don't need brave men making tough calls; we need weak-chinned bureaucrats whining about details. It's the only way communities like Philadelphia will ever move forward and achieve greatness.

"But now the itch starts. The 'Glory Boy' flash starts. 'Hey, I'm a hero. Heroes don't just stand around.' You can tell me, that's what it was, wasn't it?"

In an emotional reunion after the rescue Cheney gave Jackson $500 - his overtime pay - to help her and her family after their home was damaged in the blaze.

This guy is a farking class act.

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.

Why should he give her his mask? If she weren't so lazy she wouldn't need his mask to live; she would have had her own. The firefighter worked hard to get where he's at, and should enjoy all the benefits his mask provides. Blame Obama for that lazy woman being dependent on that hard-working fireman's breathing apparatus to live.

Did you see her picture? I'm pretty sure she's the one that should be wearing the mask.

They didn't fire them, they are just performing an investigation, as they should when someone in charge of other people's lives breaks protocol.

You'd do well in the politics tab. But you need to include more about how she should have had more faith in God, and how this was his divine punishment for being sinful.

Was she hot?

2012-07-06 08:39:31 PM
I'm confused. This is Fox "News."

They have a solid track record of sensationalizing this kind of story to manipulate their audience into hating someone. (COUGH--obama--COUGH)

They also have a solid track record of turning their audience against public employees like firefighters, cops, teachers and sanitation workers.

So I'm not sure what I'm looking at.

2012-07-06 08:42:04 PM
Wow.

That's all cool and everything with him doing that, but it's a pretty big no-no. Even if he could hold his breath for 4 minutes... a shot of superheated gas in the face will have the victim leading the way out and him learning braille.

2012-07-06 08:42:42 PM

You Idiots: Was she hot?

Any port in a storm.

Somehow I thought she would be alot hotter.

Why do we get so many links from the mail concerning stories over here in the states? Is there a professional subby out there who just links all their articles everyday in the hopes some get greenlit? How about some local articles?

2012-07-06 08:44:12 PM
I bet he gets a slap on the wrist for not following protocol and huge slap on the back for saving the woman's life.

AssAsInAssassin: I'm confused. This is Fox "News."

The Daily Fail is (one of many) "Fox Newses" of the UK. One thing you can be certain of it that one they publish an article, there will be at least one GLARING factual error in it.

Yeah, who cares about details when a highly trained team is engaged in an exceptionally dangerous situation in which they need to rely on each other behaving responsibly. Individual heroics never hurt anyone.

/the weak chinned bureaucrat in this case would be a firefighter with more years of experience than the one who broke protocol

The life guard was offered his job back and turned it down.

The mayor is going to have a ceremony and give him the key to the city....seriously

Curious, they don't have a second mask, like SCUBA divers?

Yeah, but are they going to extend the covered area.

BronyMedic: He removed his mask in an IDLH environment. If the department didn't investigate or - atleast on paper - look like they were making an effort to investigate, the unions and OSHA would have a field day with it.

Yep. They're not going to fire him for doing a decent job under rough conditions, but they are bound by all sorts of obligations to take it seriously. The dep't can't risk setting a precedent that rules are arbitrary, or the next time a guy gets hurt doing something stupid, his lawyer will point right back to this guy as proof that doing stupid stuff was implicitly allowed.

He'll probably just get a light slap on the wrist, maybe having to sit through a day-long refresher course on safety.

lordargent: Curious, they don't have a second mask, like SCUBA divers?

Modern SCBAs have secondary connections - Rapid Intervention Team connectors, where they can plug in a secondary air bottle to a downed firefighter's regulator and give him supplemental supply, and "Buddy Breathing" lines where a firefighter can share his pack's air supply with another firefighter who's in trouble, but the don't carry secondary masks. Your goal is to get a victim out and into safety as fast as possible, and let the First Responders and medics go to work on him or her.

call him a hero call him a dumbass. really he should have left the mask on and then worried about consequences after he got her out. (they do still train firefighters in cpr don't they)

on another note, I believe that the local news stations here in OKC are trolling fark for news stories because the same linked story will be featured on "watch this story at 6" piece and the link on the respective facebook page goes to the exact same article that fark is linking to. Of course the quality of news here in OKC has been slipping for years anyway so it wouldn't surprise me.

Some departments around the country are lacking firefighters, so how about a co-op? Nationwide. Is that Communist?

fark off.

2012-07-06 08:55:23 PM
Speaking as someone who is involved in these types of rescue:
Good. You don't endanger yourself by taking off your mask. That's just asking for you, her, and anyone who has to rescue your dumb ass to get hurt as well.

2012-07-06 08:57:58 PM
Okay, so they investigate, come to the conclusion that the ends (saving a woman's life) justified the means (breaking protocol) and rule that it's not worth punishing the fireman, outside of a brief refresher course on protocol.

Problem solved.
