I wouldn't say there's been a deterioration in conservative thinking. I'd say there is no conservative thinking anymore. Austrian economics basically demands you ignore anything that reality tells you because a priori it must be right.

So when are conservatives going to make a stand and say they are not going to support these crazy teatards anymore?

The only way it will change is by voting for Gary Johnson (or Obama) instead of Romney. If they know you are going to vote for them anyways no matter how crazy they are it will never change.

It's going to happen sooner or later, there will be a big split, the question is when.

You know that comment Reagan made about how he didn't leave the Democratic party, the Democratic party left him? Well, there's a whole lot of folk out there for whom the same statement is true, just replace Democratic with Republican. The problem is, those people are a very, very silent minority, and as such, the whackaloons are the ones getting elected to, and running for, public office.

When was the last true conservative we had in the White House? Eisenhower? I don't remember much of Bush the Elder's term, but was he batshiat insane? I feel like in my lifetime, which is 1982 to the present, there's been moderate Democrats and quasi-fascists....and not much else.

No shiat. Posner was always the right-wing poster child of what they thought a "conservative" judge is supposed to be. He has always basically been Ayn Rand in a black robe (though slightly less masculine-looking). If even Posner says the Republicans have gone crazy, then you know they've really gone over the cliff.

2012-07-06 04:15:06 PM
Rigorously, the GOP is not "conservative" by any standard definition. Republicans are gullible, radical, and nativist (if not racist) reactionaries.

Practically speaking, though, when tens of millions consider themselves "conservative," then the term takes on whatever qualities its proponents express.

I used to read his opinions and essays back in college and law school for the outrage factor. I rarely if ever agreed with him, but at least he wasn't certifiably looney tunes. I could chalk up my difference of opinion with Posner to having a different value system than him.

You know, as opposed to existing in a different reality. The reality I live in -- the one where the president is a center-right friend to the corporate and banking lobbies, was born in the United States, and has no plans to execute millions of senior citizens through sinister death panels -- is the same reality shared by Posner, and a wholly different reality than that of his former conservative allies.

Anyway, welcome, Dick! Take a seat. As an added bonus I think you'll find the beer is better on our side.

It really has been hijacked by Neocons, Teatards, Nativists, racists, Christian Taliban evangelicals, and the people dumb enough to never vote for democrats, no matter what.

It's so bad now that when anyone suggests there is logic in any current republican party stance, I assume they are dumb almost automatically. It really shouldn't be that way.

Yes but the teatards still will vote for those people. So I am saying just voting in the primaries like that won't change anything if they are going to vote for someone with an R in the general. They won't care until it makes them lose elections.

Here you go: "Ship of fools".

A couple of caveats: take it with a grain of salt, as the entire thing is from the admittedly liberal author's POV and the people he quotes obviously do not separately give their take. And I don't think Buckley confirmed or denied the account, and anyway he wasn't too long for the world at the time so he never will.

But knowing what is confirmed about Buckley -- that he was very much against the Iraq war, that he was pro pot legalization, that he expressed disillusionment with the neocons -- well, I'd say where there's smoke there's fire. And it's a great read.

Now, for my reward. If "nearly anything" includes getting me hammered on my favorite beer, I gratefully accept.

This is exactly how I feel. I used to consider myself a moderate conservative, but now my family considers me a crazy radical liberal. The problem is, my views haven't changed. It's just that the center has been moved so far to the right, that there's not really two sides anymore. Now there's only "left" and crazy.

The conservatives are making a stand. They're staying home from the GOP convention and are putting their heads in the sand for a few years before coming out as Democrats. The idea that there's sane Republicans is only there to keep this Frankenstein of a political party going. The reality is that the Republicans have gone so far that there is no saving the brand. And thanks to their machinations for the last three decades, there are really only two choices left: the Republicans who are insane theologists, and the Democrats who are....well, everybody else at this point.
